Ok all you Mitch Berger haters, time to look at reality:

Punts 811
Punt Yards 28,586
Punting Yard Average 43.0
Punts blocked 3

Inside 20, percentage (career) about 32%
Returns allowed (career) about 50% (this is return yardage not TD's). 50% of the time there is no return after a Mitch Berger punt.

Compared to Matt Turk:
About 33% inside 20 with returns allowed about 40% of the time.

The correlation between punting and winning in the NFL is moderate to moderate-weak. Not one of these stats had a correlation weaker than -.50 or greater than .50. This is no surprise, since special teams is just one component of winning football.

Gross Averages and Net Averages of Punters don't matter as much as you think. Essentially, the correlations between the most cited stats in punting (Gross Average, Net Average) have the weakest correlations and are negative. This means that winning games has little to do with punting averages. Moreover, those teams with punters who have a "big leg" are usually those teams that are losing and likely punting with larger fields, and as such, can really tear loose with big kicks.

In the punting game, putting your opponent in their red zone and limiting return opportunities are the most important factors in winning. In fact, the two most important positive relationships between winning and punting are the percentage of your punts that you put inside the 20 and the percentage of punts not returned. Again, don't let your opponent have the opportunity to have opportunity!

---

He's been blocked less than 1/2 of 1% of his attempts. His punts resulted in TD's 5 times in his fifteen year career. Compared to Kern's very short career with 2.

The *official* cut berger, sign colquitt petition
Here it is, knowing it does absolutely no good as far as it's effectiveness, I am curious as to what you other fans think? Just sign below to be added to the petition if you agree.

Colquitt looked the best in the pre-season. Even my Dad who is a Bears fan mentioned how good he was. Why was he cut? McD screwed up and he's been patching it up ever since. Berger is beyond pathetic. Kern is better and he's even pathetic. That should tell you the level of Berger's patheticness.

John Madden's school of thought on punting.
This is my understanding of John Madden's school of thought on punting.
Coach Madden would tell Ray Guy to punt it as high and as far as he could. He would make sure that the players on the punting unit were fast so they could get downfield quickly enough to prevent the return man from making a huge return. A simple but effective strategy.
