Dove Valley Dispatches

ENTRIES
Throughout training camp, Managing Editor Andrew Mason will offer some quick-hit observations from each practice. Entries will come throughout each day at irregular intervals, but as frequently as he can get around to it.

BRONCOS TV
Camp is under way! Check out the highlights from the first day, including some red-zone one-on-one duels, a deep reception by David Kircus and a pair of Javon Walker receptions.

Over a thousand fans crowded along a grassy hillside Saturday morning to greet the Broncos for their third training-camp session.

Some quick observations from the two-hour session that saw the players don shoulder pads for a second consecutive practice:

Ron Dayne had perhaps the run of the day in team drills when he went left, found no room, then cut back right and into the open field, eliciting one fan to bellow, "Talking 'bout Ron Dayne -- Heisman, baby!"
Todd Devoe made some catches, but drew the most notice from the onlookers by taking a reverse and bursting into the open field up the left sideline;
The team got in some work on kickoff returns; Charlie Adams, Roc Alexander, Brandon Marshall and David Kircus each fielded kicks;
An interesting first-team spread formation saw Ron Dayne and Tony Scheffler split wide;
The hit parade from Friday afternoon continued into the next morning, most prominently when D.J. Williams decked Tatum Bell on a short carry up the middle.
And Jay Cutler showed some zip on his throws; the 1,046 in attendance reacted warmly to a series of thread-the-needle, across-the-middle tosses he fired during seven-on-seven and team work.

"He’s a Hall-of-Fame player," Shanahan said, laughing. "He's pretty good. Obviously, he has the tools. It's a big growing curve. We're just hoping on gameday he can play along with his talents."

Everyone practiced but Nate Webster, Domenik Hixon and the absent Ashley Lelie. Webster, who took part in both sessions Friday, was given the morning off and will practice this afternoon; his absence from the field was not due to a recurrence of problems in the knee on which he had multiple surgeries over the past two years.

"He doesn't have any problems with it, but it's more preventative than anything," Shanahan said.

Yesterday afternoon, cornerback Champ Bailey, safety John Lynch, defensive linemen Courtney Brown, Ebenezer Ekuban, Amon Gordon and Gerard Warren, offensive linemen Matt Lepsis and Tom Nalen, wide receiver Rod Smith and tight end Stephen Alexander all were absent from the action during the session. All of them practiced Saturday morning.
