Reed elaborates on injury status
Safety has nerve impingement in neck, shoulder, raising doubts about availability for opener; 'Hopefully, I can get back, but health is more important right now'

Ravens Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed revealed today that he has a nerve impingement in his neck and shoulder. That condition further increases doubts about whether he will be available for the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"Hopefully, I can get back, but health is more important right now," Reed said. "It's a long season and I feel like the team is going to need me more down the line than earlier and having to get hurt and can't play again."

Reed has continued to practice but he has not taken serious contact throughout the entire offseason. He has been sidelined for all four preseason games with what has only been described as a shoulder injury by the Ravens.

Over the past month, Reed said he has seen specialists for treatments in North Carolina, Michigan, Florida and New Jersey.

"I wanted to make sure there is nothing bad that can happen," Reed said. "I can still go out there and play as long as I take some safety precautions."

The injury is a perplexing one for Reed and the Ravens.

After a reporter asked Reed if the injury limits his range of motion, he started an impromptu breakdance move, rolling his arms and neck.

"It's more in depth than that," Reed said. "It's something I got to deal with. It won't go away but I can do some things to prevent a lot."

According to Reed, he doesn't need surgery at this time. When he does, the operation would be career-ending.

"If I had surgery now, you wouldn't be interviewing me ever again," he said.

Reed was named to his fourth Pro Bowl last season, when he finished with 45 tackles and a team-leading seven interceptions.

If Reed can't start, the Ravens will likely replace him with Jim Leonhard, a free-agent pickup from the Buffalo Bills.

"You're not getting pressured to play but you know in the long run that this is a business," Reed said. "You're not helping if you're not out there. At the same time, you got to be smart about it."

The only Ratbird I like...he is a great player and I would hate to see his career end; but if he is risking the ability to have a normal life after football, I hope he can find it in him to walk away from the game.

Oh ****. One of my favorites. Ever. As someone mentioned earlier, if he is risking having a normal life after football, I hope he retires.

Pretty much this. I appreciate what Reed can do as a fan of the game, and though I hate his team, I wish him a swift recovery. I hope it's not goodbye.

Well, Ed wasn't accused of STEROIDS...

Hope Ed and Merriman get well soon... but merriman deserved it ;) :smug:

BTW Quinn is stupid on that commercial for EAS...

Brady says," I take Supplements to make sure the bench is nice and warm for Derek Anderson."

One of the greats. You make a list of abilities you want a safety to have, you come up with Ed Reed. He could retire now, and still go out as one of the best ever.

Ravens FS Ed Reed (shoulder) is ignoring doctor's orders to rest for two weeks and will instead try to play against the Bengals.

Reed practiced Wednesday without a red non-contact jersey for the first time since suffering a nerve impingement in his neck and shoulder. "If it keeps lingering throughout the season, it definitely could come to some point to where we shut it down for the year," he said. It's hard to believe that Reed can play every down or be his usual self; Carson Palmer shouldn't be worried.
