I hate to say it but the Ole Man is actually sounding pretty rational. He isn't fumbling over his words, has pointed out lies Kiffin has told to the press, has called ESPN analyst and reporter Chris Mortensen a LIAR, has said the reason Petrino left Atl so quick is due to Arkansas wanting Kiffin but Davis wasn't going to let Lane go until the end of the season so Petrino left in order to get the job, he has explained the "resignation" letter was not sent but was drafted by his lawyer along with Lane's lawyer because Lane wanted out without penalties being levied against him, and also said Kiffin was totally against drafting Jamarcus.

Davis is saying he fired Kiffin "for cause" rather than for performance and that is why he doesn't have to pay him. I guess we will see in time how that turns out. Al has actually been pretty damn funny if you ask me.

Watching it on NFL network. For a press conference, must see T.V. :P

He has a point, trying to kick a 76 yard field goal must mean you wanna get fired.:coffee:

That whole thing is a lie IMHO.

I'll take Kiffen's word over anything Davis mutters.

He also said they have something like 24 coaches on staff:eek:

It will be interesting to see if Mortensen sues Davis for slander because certaintly whether true or not his reputation has been damaged and his credibility questioned in the pubics eye. This Raider saga is long from over.

I do got a question though... How is a head coach supposed to succeed if he
doesnt have his people?

No players are being let go or benched (significant players anyway), no assistant
coaches, or specialist coaches are being let go. Kiffen is the only guy, so I dont
understand how he was supposed to run HIS team without the proper people
for HIS team.

Lane is going to have a press conference tomorrow so that should be a pretty good one. Davis said he has several witnesses who can back up his stories. Of course money talks too. If this makes it to the courts it is gonna be crazy because obviously someone is lying and if they do that in court it is perjury.

You know for all the b1tching we have done about our defense this year..........I will take our defense everyday and twice on Sunday rather than have the management issues Oakland has. They have to be the most dysfunctional organization in all professional sports.

If davis says he has people that prove Kiffin lied then he probabley paid them off to lie. Id believe kiffin over davis anyday.

I'm leaning towards believing Al Davis. I work in the legal profession and know the consequences of lieing in this forum. Davis brought out documents/letters he had sent to Lane and is having copies made to hand out to all of the reporters present at the press conference. You don't do that if it is all made up. Kiffin is young and I think like Davis said he was enticing Al to fire him. Look at last week as Al pointed out, they could have thrown a 20 yard out and brought Janikowski to a 56 yard fg but instead he wasted his TOs and had horrible clock management and actually tried a 76 yard field goal INTO the wind:confused: Kiffin has been wanting to get fired but he also wants to get paid and I think the reason he was fired this week rather than 2-3 weeks ago is because Davis and his legal team were doing their homework in order to find a way to fire him without having to pay him. From my experience they very well might be successful. Only time will tell.

INSTANT CLASSIC............."Interim? I can't even spell interim!" I was rolling on the floor when I heard that. I dog on Al just as much as anyone but after watching this I can help but kinda like the guy. He is a funny old fart if anything.

Lane Kiffin is better off.... and sadly, Al Davis is not.

One thing the crusty old bastard is dead-on about is Chris Mortensen, who is a cheesy celebrity tabloid writer masquerading as a sports journalist.

Some good points are being brought up in here both for and against Davis. It is my opinion that the game has passed him by, and if not - he is definitely trying to control too many facets of the organization. What he could do alone in the 60s and 70s, takes multiple roles now that 'specialize' in those particular fields.

Like I said, he is running the franchise into the ground. However, he has earned the right in my opinion. I don't necessarily like it, but he IS the Raiders and I will ride this sinking ship until Al steps down. Be it his will or God's.

Also, yes - he is quite funny even if it's in a Howard Hughes kind of way. He is definitely out there but he has a set of brass ones.

I was against firing Kiffin (even though we aren't privy to everything that goes on behind the scenes) and I'm not very optimistic about coach Cable doing any better. One thing that I do believe though is that this move became inevitable at some point so this is a necessary step. Not a popular one, but it had to be done so the players and front office can move past it.

I can see it now - Herm Edwards continues to suck it up for the rest of the season. He gets fired. KC hires Kiffin and he Shanahans us for the next 20 years. That would be our luck.

Al Davis is an egotistical, paranoid hothead. Spite him, he will get you back tenfold.

On the other side, he is blindly loyal, incredibly generous, hilarious and charming. Marcus Allen is a rare exception that I'll never understand.

If this press conference was held four years ago, I would've pumped my fist, as I love to get revenge tenfold myself. I would've kept saying "Get em AL!" At that time, he deserved my unwavering support. Today, it was 70/30 against. His charm and humor was still there and I cracked up with a "That's Al for ya." But he lost me 30 minutes in. He's still a fascinating figure in modern sports. Fascinating as in if you missed it, you're a square.

Bingo. Davis even said he brought the players, now coach them. Doesn't work that way.

It's called calculating. He was basically in court. Anything he says can and will be used against him by the press. Especially when you know he wasn't 100% in the right in all of this. he made sure he got his story right.
