Good sign.

As long as we didn't overpay. He can compete for a starting spot, and will be good depth for the LB position.

I like it.

Manning must have informed us he is signing with another team...freeing us up to make this move.

Good for depth and can challenge Irving for the starting spot.

I'm glad we resigned SOMEBODY

Now this...THIS! is what I'm talkin about ...Brandon Carr? Jason Jones? Jameel McClain? Who needs those good players

Joe Mays baby WOOH! ...

Good signing but obviously not one that's really gna help

I'm real happy with this.

He's not a big MLB, but with some beef at the DT spot to keep the lineman off of him, he's a valuable player. He doesn't shy away from contact and can lay backs out. He has really good instincts too.

And for everytime I've seen him knock a guy's block off (yes I love it too) I see him miss 2 tackles and have garbage gap control

I would rather have re-signed Bunkley. Oh well, I just hope Irving can beat him out for the starting MLB spot, because watching Mays overrun plays down the stretch got really old.

03-18-2012, 03:46 PM
hooray. that's one average player we can look forward to seeing again next year. though i do enjoy watching him murder people (kill eddie royal for me please, give him the moeaki treatment)

No fear we'd sign anybody good as an upgrade though

Warhawk
03-18-2012, 03:47 PM
Sure he can deliver a big hit. He can also look lost out there. He didn't finish the season well at all and I have no reason to think he'll get a whole lot better.

How many MLB's will we likely carry? Two seems right. In that case, I guess we're counting on Irving taking his game up a notch to win the starter spot.

Meh signing but he is a good special teams player. Hope he doesn't see the field as a MLB though.

This whole week has been a huge disappointment.

Buck_N_Broncs
03-18-2012, 03:51 PM
How would this "free us up?" I like Mays but he is average at best, and I doubt we have him a big contract. Especially if we're still fighting with Bunkley on a contract.

Not overly excited bout bringing back t-rex

He mean and makes big hits but he has the shortest arms when it comes time to tackle

Joe Mays probably signed a cheap contract. This move does not mean he will start at MLB and it does not even mean he will make the final roster. The Broncos still have a lot of time and money left to add more competition.

He's a monster on ST's.

I like the signing. I'd like to see the numbers but I'm not a GM so I guess it doesn't really matter.

he was the starter last year. not many guys resign with a team just to play special teams. i hope youre right and thats the case cus this guy made me mad a lot towards the end of the year. we need serious competition at MLB was one of our weakest positions last year.

i hope nates the answer

i really wish we would resign woodyard, mays was not a necessity he is ooookkkk at best, woody was a team captain and a quality backup and potential starter

Id rather just turn it over to Nate then to go back to Mays, he was pretty bad last year all the way around, at least with the young guy there is a bigger upside....im just still shaking my head wondering what happened to our big FA plans to fix this defense, this whole Manning situation has screwed us big time, the only way to salvage things is if he picks Denver and they sign all his buddies off the street, otherwise we could be rolling into camp with a weaker team then we had last year.

murder mays was my favorite going into the season last year. with that said i was hoping we didnt resign him and would sign someone that can play the posistion smarter i guess you could say. is there such a thing as hiring a line backer coach in the offseason? if so i hope he hires one. love the big hits but all the misses negates that.

http://blog.denverbroncos.com/denverbroncos/broncos-agree-to-terms-with-joe-mays/?module=HP11_headline_stack

The Broncos have agreed to terms to re-sign linebacker Joe Mays, the team announced on Sunday. Mays played all 16 games (12 starts) for the team in 2011 and ranked third on the club with 74 tackles.

He led the team with 7.5 tackles for a loss and posted 10 games with five or more tackles during the 2011 season, including the Broncos’ two postseason contests, which he started.

Mays, who will enter his fifth NFL season in 2012, has totaled 109 tackles in his career. He also has three pass breakups and one forced fumble.

A sixth-round pick by Philadelphia in the 2008 NFL Draft, Mays spent the first two years of his career with the Eagles before joining the Broncos via trade prior to the 2010 season.

He tallied 285 tackles in 43 games for North Dakota State University, where he earned first-team Division I-AA honors and was named the Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

From DenverPost.com

Agree d to terms on a three-year deal worth about $12 million, with $4 million guaranteed the first year

Seems a lot of money for a backup and special team players. I think McClain ask for too much and the FO switch back to Mays. Hoping Irvinig or another draft pick could push him for starting job.

He will not be a backup special teams player. He will be starting more than likely. Hence the money paid. Irving couldn't crack the lineup last season. He obviously isn't where he needs to be to start full time. Keep him on the bench developing and hope at the end of the season or the next he can take over. And Irving can also play WILL and be in on that competition to take over for DJ Williams.

Joe Mays will be getting a ful off season to grow. he played solid last year. he is young. Good pickup.

looks like we have our starting linebacker. Would have preferred London Fletcher on a 2 year deal while Irving developed but if mays plays smarter not harder he can be a very good above average linebacker for us.

japfaff
03-19-2012, 05:00 AM
If that contract is right......3 years 12 mil with 4 mil guaranteed.....That tells me that this is a one year deal and he will be cut/renegotiated next offseason. So while the player isnt the best that we could have done, at least it is just a short term solution to the bigger problem......But I am really starting to wonder when this franchise is going to address the monstrous hole at MLB? The FO has totally painted themselves in a corner with this whole PM thing....If we do not get him the whole group has completely failed this offseason.

johnlimburg

Plenty of talent left in free agency Jabfaff. If we miss out on Manning there will still be guys to get. And there is a draft.

I wouldn't count on that happening. Mays' game is all about being a human cannonball. He can't really cover outside of the short zones and for a run stuffer, he makes a lot of dubious decisions.

A short term patch job at best. Not a wise use of $$$.
