Rockies starter tonight Juan Nicasio will make his first start at CoorsField since 8/15/11 vs. WAS, the game in which he suffered a fractured C-1 vertebrae as a result of his fall after being hit by a batted ball...prior to the injury, the majority of Nicasio’s most productive starts during his rookie season of 2011 came at Coors...he finished 2011 with a 4-1 record and a 1.98 ERA(41.0 ip, 9 er)in his 7 starts at Coors.

• Nicasio’s home ERA of 1.98 last season was actually historically good...the 1.98 mark he posted at Coors Field represents the lowest ERA for a pitcher with at least five starts at Coors Field in a single season in the stadium’s history (since 1995)...it was far lower than the previous record of 3.19 by Ubaldo Jimenez in 2010.

• Nicasio began the 2012 season by allowing just one run on 5 hits and one walk with 5 strikeouts on 4/8 at HOU...that was actually Nicasio’s sixth-career start (only 14 career starts total) of pitching at least 7.0 innings and allowing one earned run or less...four of the five games he accomplished that in 2011 he did so at Coors Field.

Once Nicasio masters his offspeed stuff like he has with his fastball, the guy will be a monster.

Wish I was at Coors to root him on!

Let's go Nicasio!!!!!

He has become one of my favorite Rockies....

Broncoholic3233

Ask teammates what they notice most about Juan Nicasio and the answer is simple: his smile.

He’s perpetually upbeat. Even a few weeks removed from his broken veterbra, Nicasio never let his emotions sink.

“He told me everyday that he was going to pitch again. He never had a doubt,” said catcher and best friend Wilin Rosario. “They weren’t taking this away from him.”

The final hurdle in Nicasio’s miraculous recovery comes tonight. He will pitch on the Coors Field mound for the first time since a line drive struck him in the head, the subsequent fall fracturing his neck. Trainer Keith Dugger said he knew Nicasio would be fine this spring when he didn’t flinch after a batter smoked a line drive back at his head in his first spring game.

But some caution remained. While starting Nicasio for the home opener would have made for a great story, the Rockies didn’t want to overwhelm the right-hander. This is still like returning to the scene of an accident. Nicasio told me last week, “I look forward to getting past this. I am not nervous. I am excited.”

I make a habit of not telling fans how to spend their money or react. That’s their call. As it should be. But a standing ovation tonight when he takes the mound would be fitting. With that in mind, here’s the Rockies’ lineup that will face Arizona’s Daniel Hudson.

Crap, I'm really falling out of touch with the Rox this year (thank God it's so early in the season) I don't recognize a lot of these names.

Fortunately I'm going to have a MUCH better work schedule so I'll actually get to go see some games this summer. I haven't been since 2003.

Rockies 7 Dbas 6

Juan had his first start at Coors since the line drive beamed him in the head. He started off strong 2 down, but then something got to him. He struggled, whether he admits it or not, the nerves got to him. Sucked to see him struggle like that, and the ump squeezing him didn't help. I know he'll bounce back...he has the desire to be great....and will be great.

Starting Pitching:

Juan Nicasio: 2.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR; ND (0-0)

3 Batting Stars:

Todd Helton: (3-5) 3 H, 2B (3), 3 RBI (6)

Ramon Hernandez: (2-4) 2 H, 1 R, 2B (2), HR (1), 3 RBI (5)

Dexter Fowler: (1-5) H, HR (1), RBI (2)

Bullpen Stars:

Esmil Rogers: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR

Matt Belisle: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR

Rex Brothers: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 0 HR; W (1-1)

Rafael Betancourt: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO, 0 HR; SV (2)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Player of the game....ESMIL ROGERS. With 2 on, 2nd and 3rd no outs. He battles and gets a comebacker...a strike out....and then a pop out (spacing on that one)....that was the key to the game. He held them scoreless and allowed us to have a chance.

The whole bullpen was fantastic! 6 1/3 innings and they gave up 3 total hits, 1 walk and no runs. What a phenomenal outing from them.

I didn't mention Tulo in the 3 batting stars, but he had a great game at the plate....but had a key strike out which sucked, but luckily the Todd father had his back!

Rockies move to 3-4 on the season. Next game is tomorrow at Coors against the Diamondbacks at 6:10 pm.

Man, you really need to lay off of Tracy. Every single mistake is somehow his fault, but every time something good happens, it is because of the players. The crap is really being laid on a little thick.

Reynolds is terrible against lefties, but you want him against Montero? Especially when you are complaining that we need to save pitchers you want him to warm up multiple relievers just in case?

From the look of it, Belisle wasn't ready yet and he needed to buy time. Reynolds' job was to face one hitter and let Belisle loosen up.

No. If you are going to bring in Reynolds right after that inning, why the hell not bring him in against Montero? Makes no sense. He's a lefty, that's the reason he is here, for specialty.

Then with 3 innings left, you start playing chess? Are you kidding me? Bring him in for another lefty, only to yank him after. Then go to Belisle.

So now....we've used 3 bullpen pitchers to get through 2 innings. With 2 innings to go AT LEAST and our bullpen has already had a ton of work.

I don't think you are getting what you are saying. Even if he brought Reynolds in against Montero, left him in for Overbay, then used Belisle we still burned through 3 pitchers. The only difference is the shouldacouldawoulda game.

Not to mention, was Reynolds ready in the bullpen? If he was, then I'll shut up. If Reynolds wasn't, like I'm guessing, then it still brings up that you are ASKING TRACY TO DO TWO DIFFERENT THINGS, AND GETTING MAD FOR BOTH. You didn't want him to burn relievers, except when he should have?!

With 5 innings to go.....you can't be burning pitchers at this rate.

They should have kept in Josh longer, that's what I think. BUT MY POINT IS -- IF you are going to just bring in Reynolds the next inning.....they should have brought him in then. Go to the mound....visit....stall if he isn't ready. OR stop burning pitchers and let a longer reliever in Josh got longer.

Now we are on our 4th reliever with at least 2 more innings to go. With an already shortened pen.

Okay, now I get you.

I do know the Roenicke doesn't go multiple innings, but something after that smells fishy. It really does seem to me that for some reason Tracy thought he would have Belisle for the 6th, but he wasn't even going.

You very well could be right, Tracy could have had a friggin aneurism and decided to start throwing guys out there.

It will be interesting to see how it is explained.

What a bizarre and frustrating game tonight. Mainly because it screwed Chacin out of a probable win and screwed our bullpen. Chacin wasn't pitching great, but he was pitching pretty damned good. Probably was going to go 6, and likely 7 innings. He tweaked his mechanics and it paid off. He pitched a pretty damn good game until the rain delay hit.

Starting Pitching:

Jhoulys Chacin: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR; ND (0-1)

3 Batting Stars:

Todd Helton: (1-4) H, R, HR (1), 2 RBI (8), BB

Michael Cuddyer: (3-4) 3 H, R, 3B (1), RBI (5)

Tyler Colvin: (2-4) 2 H, 2 R, HR (1), 2 RBI (3)

Bullpen Stars:

Tyler Chatwood: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR; W (1-0)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Todd Father does it again! He never ceases to amaze! He's a HOF'er. Try to argue he isn't.

Our bullpen got used heavily again tonight and not because of bad pitching....which really sucks. Chatwood records the win.

Cuddyer keeps on hitting, what a great signing! Ramon hits another jack as well!

Rockies move to 4-4 on the season. Rockies win the series against the Diamondbacks. Next game is tomorrow at Coors Field against the Diamondbacks at 1:10pm (weather pending).

Broncoholic JS

D ENVER -- Todd Helton hit a two-run homer off closer J.J. Putz in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Colorado Rockies rallied for an 8-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on a rain-soaked Saturday night.

With two outs, Helton belted his first homer of the season down the right-field line and the towering shot stayed just fair. He raised his hands in the air as he rounded the bases and was mobbed by teammates at home plate.

Tyler Chatwood (1-0) pitched two innings and gave up a run to earn the win in relief.

The Diamondbacks were trailing 5-1 when the game was halted by a relentless downpour after four innings. But the 71-minute break energized their bats and they came out of the clubhouse swinging.

Miguel Montero hit a three-run homer and pinch-hitter Paul Goldschmidt broke a tie with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

The lead wouldn't last as Putz blew his first save of the season. He hit Marco Scutaro with a pitch to start the ninth inning, but got pinch-hitter Jason Giambi to pop up and then struck out Troy Tulowitzki.

That set the stage for Helton, who also delivered what turned out to be the game-winning hit the night before with a double in the eighth.

On this dreary night in the Mile High City, the grounds crew kept shoveling layers of diamond dust on the soaked infield to dry it out, but that hardly helped. The persistent rain made every play an adventure.

So slick was the field that smooth-fielding shortstop Tulowitzki had two throwing errors -- in one inning.

Later, left fielder Gerardo Parra slipped while chasing down an RBI double by Eric Young Jr., which made it a 7-6 game.

Goldschmidt had a big at-bat off the bench with Chris Young standing on third. He hit a high fly to right off Rex Brothers that Michael Cuddyer had plenty of time to camp under.

His throw was on line, too, but Young slid around the tag of catcher Ramon Hernandez.

The Diamondbacks added an insurance run in the eighth when Ryan Roberts put down a squeeze bunt and John McDonald avoided the tag of Hernandez. McDonald also drove in the tying run in the seventh on an RBI double that scored Aaron Hill, who reached on Tulowitzki's error.

All this after hard-luck starter Jhoulys Chacin departed.

These days, Chacin can't win even when the hard-throwing righty is, well, winning.

He was rolling along in the drizzle as he methodically set down the Diamondbacks with a more aggressive approach on the mound. But just as he was about to duck out of the dugout for the fifth inning, the umpires signaled for the tarp.

With that, his night was finished.

Chacin had his good stuff, too, the kind of movement on his pitches that has led manager Jim Tracy to proclaim him an ace in the making. He scattered four hits and gave up one run over four innings, but is still searching for his first win since Aug. 28.

It was definitely a step in the right direction.

He pledged to be more aggressive against the Diamondbacks, instead of nibbling at the plate as he did in his season debut.

Chacin did just that, too, throwing 41 of his 64 pitches for strikes.

He also helped himself at the plate, driving in a run on a grounder off counterpart Josh Collmenter, who was let off the hook for a second straight outing.

Collmenter gave up six runs -- five earned -- in three innings against the Giants, only to see his team rally back in that contest.

The speed of Dexter Fowler led to a run in the third. With two outs and Fowler on second, Cuddyer hit a slow roller to first baseman Lyle Overbay, who flipped the ball to Collmenter with the pitcher racing toward the bag.

Only, it wasn't in time and Fowler, hustling the entire way, darted for home, sliding under the tag of Montero.

On this damp and cool evening, Collmenter's cutter did anything but cut, especially in the second inning as the Rockies hit back-to-back homers. Tyler Colvin lined the pitch over the fence in right for a two-run homer.

Four pitches later, Hernandez crushed another Collmenter cutter for a solo shot to straightaway center.

Colvin received the start in left with Carlos Gonzalez taking a sick day due to strep throat.

Game notes The start was delayed 16 minutes by a steady rain. ... Before the game, the Rockies reinstated Charlie Blackmon (turf toe) from the 15-day disabled list and optioned

Pacheco was optioned to make room for Drew Pomeranz. I believe Tracy will regret that one, as now Nelson has to be the starter at 3rd, and he hasn't proven he can be a starter there full time. The switching off was needed.

Fowler given the day off it would seems, now we have a liability in CF in EY, but he's been good offensively, so guess that's why they are letting him go today.

And no, I'm not dramatizing it. Tulo had acknowledged in the off-season he does it way to much. Goodman and Frazier talked about it multiple times last year. Cory was predicting last night when we were talking during the game that he would because that's what he's known for in the clutch, as was I.

So, maybe you should take your own advice, and get over yourself and stop targeting.

Until then, go on hating players that matter like Guthrie and Giambi and keep sticking up for the bum in Moyer.

Although as usual on the internet I can see how sometimes you think that means I'm targeting you specifically. And honestly a few times I have but not nearly as many times as you think. Then when you come back at me I honestly get defensive.

But new rule I will try to just not post any replies when I disagree with you on anything regarding players. I will just try to discuss how the overall team is doing and any players that are performing well.

Honestly I've conversed with you in the past and never had issues until I started busting your balls about the NCAA tournament. Since then it's possible that I have disagreed with your posts just for the sake of disagreement.

That is how it appears to me. It appears to me that you are arguing with me, for the sake of disagreement. And yes, this all started after our arguments during the NCAA.

If you stop disagreeing with me, just for the sake of disagreeing, I'll un-ignore you and we can actually converse about the Rockies. Because this ignore list is pretty damn pointless anyways, as I can see whatever you say, without having to un-ignore and re-ignore.

Fair enough. Last night was honestly just being defensive because Tulo is my favorite player. I did say on here that he has become extremely un clutch over the past year or so.

Funny thing is I was mad he struck out and I wasn't even thinking about how he could've ended the game on a double play. But you weren't wrong in your assessment of the situation. I just thought it was a bit over the top.

And regarding Moyer I have no problems with him losing his spot to De La Rosa when he returns. De La Rosa is my favorite pitcher although that could be Nicasio soon.

Tulo is definitely one of my favorite players. But he drives me crazy.

He has the best defense in the game, there is no arguing that. Some of the plays he makes are just insane.

However, he isn't the leader he needs to be. He knows that, that's what he's aknowledged all off-season. He's working on that.

He's also just not all that clutch. Too many DP's with runners on, running us out of innings. Or just not getting the needed hits. Sometimes he's extremely clutch, other times, not so much. He's just too hot/cold. Once he fixes that, he's going to be even that much better.

Also, I have no problem with Moyer the person. He's a great guy, there is no questioning that. Also, he was a great pitcher back when. However, right now, this team needs pitchers to eat innings, and he'll just never do that. He'll probably be lucky to get through 6 a lot of the time. And when you have pitchers like Rogers, White, Mosocoso that could be starting and getting experience....I just hate to see them go to waste.

I was talking to my dad about this last night and he thinks Tracey just doesn't want to throw the young guns to the fire to early. However I've already agreed with most on here that think Tracey is clueless when it comes to handling the pitching staff.

I was also trying to figure out why I was even spending so much time defending Moyer. Because its not like he has been a long time Rockie. Only thing I could come up with is that if he is going to be on the roster then I want the Rockies to be the genius team that resurrected a 49 year olds career and set the record for oldest to win a start. Just a feel good story. When I realized that it really seems rather dumb if that's my only reason. But nonetheless I still have to root for him until he is replaced. Rather than watch him suck until he is replaced.

Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I pray Moyer wins, so my team can win.

I just don't see it happening. He goes to short of innings and always gives up quite a few hits, and he's known for giving up runs.

It just burdens our bullpen, but hopefully, one of these starts he goes 6 strong with minimal runs, and he can get a W at 49. We'll see.

Ugh. EY is just too big of a liability in the OF.

If that's CarGo or probably anyone else out there....Upton is out.

5-0.....and bullpen has to go another 4 2/3 innings at least.

Rough first outing of the year for Pomeranz.

We are playing our Junior Varsity squad today....against a pretty good pitcher....and hence the 3 hits.

Baylor should have been our skipper IMO.

We've scored the 3rd most runs in the NL so far and have the most extra base hits.

Today is just a case of starting the whole damn JV team. :brick: I'll never get Tracy. I just won't.

Fire Tracy, Hire Don Baylor....

Not sure why we fired him as manager in the 1st place, did the most with less.

The 17 run game, bosted those stats a lot. ANd that's the problem. This team's philosophy seems to be to hack and put up 17 a game, but when a pitcher is on their game, this team has no idea how to move runners over, bring them in, or work a count to get on base or get to the bullpen. It is feast or famine. And I think that philosophy sucks.

Can't expect much against Cahill with your JV squad.

Well, Tracy decided to rest everyone at once, so basically it was our JV team vs the Diamondbacks minus Montero.

Not surprising we lost starting only 3 starters.

At least we won the series 2-1.

Padres series starts tomorrow at Coors. Guthrie on the mound.

Extended game+night/day shift+CarGo still sick is a recipe for disaster. Let's hope it works in the long run like planned.

On a fun note, I was at the game and after Roenicke struck out Upton I tweeted to him:

"Roenicke just struck you out. He didn't talk trash. That is called class, sir."
