How is there not already a hockey thread? Maybe my such filters is messed up, but I didn't see one.

Post all things hockey in this thread.

My team looked like complete crap Saturday. I'm not gonna blame the lockout, but they looked sloppy and out of place. Jimmy Howard doesn't get a slap on the wrist, I think he's the most overrated goalie in hockey.

My Devils off to a solid start. Offense isn't too impressive, but David Clarkson is doing a great job stepping up with a point in each of the first 5 games.

Another note, I Know the Hawks are 6-0 right now but I'm picking the Blues to represent the West...I like what they have going on over there.

I wasn't all too excited for hockey to come back, I follow the Ducks but hockey is an afterthought for me. But after going to that game and seeing the great start to the season, I'm defintely watching more and more FSN West!

I swear Evgeni Malkin is the most hot and cold player I've ever seen. He'll make some jaw dropping play happen one moment, and then turn it over in his own zone for the rest of the period.

Pens look shaky to start the season at 4-3. No depth at wing is killing them. I don't think they've started the same lines in the last 2 or 3 games. I still think they have the best power play in the league, I don't think you can put 5 better players on the ice than Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Kunitz, and Letang.

They can't figure out the starting goalie either. Honestly I think Fleury could be traded.

Indeed. My problem with Howie is that he is inconsistent. One night he'll have a game where he gets 45 saves. The next he'll allow 5 goals. Detroit wants someone who can be as close to Osgood as possible. Jimmy Howard isn't that. Another flaw of his, he lets in easy goals. He defends greatly vs had to block shots and amazing shots. But the simplest shot will get in on him.

I like that the Pens got back on track against the Sens after the double shilacking by the NJD. However Matt Cooke made a horrible dirty play that made me sick... kicked Karlsson right in the achilles. Probably ended his season and who knows with achilles maybe career. Cooke really changed the way he plays the last couple years but watching the replay it could have been an accident but it looked dirty. Will have to see if the league takes action.

I heard he said that he thought the Predators passed the puck back, making it legal for Duchene to touch it and score.

Obviously they didn't, they merely tipped it, but he saw it off the stick and thought it was a pass.

A horribly, awful missed call that was hilarious. Everyone stopped...Duchene included....and then he just waltzed up, top shelfed it and the horn sounded. So hilarious watching it live.

Well we won again, so we're temporarily out of the Mac/Jones race. Did you see our guy Kane miss the empty net on the high side?? They could have tied us after that?? Evander's a great talent but sometimes...

Hey bud......you really think Mac is a better prospect than Jones? We'd love him, because we're short on O. Then again, we're better than that (picking so low), at least I think so. This Drouin kid looks like another star in the making.

Not sure if we have any Columbus fans here, but I get a strong feeling that they will be in the draft lottery for a couple more years.....minimum. I hate to say it, but I doubt anyone wants to go there. Used to be that few guys wanted to come here, but over time our rep has improved. When asked about this city, Selanne's wife gave it a big thumbs up.

As for Columbus.....seems to be a real management problem in terms of putting a solid roster on the ice. Not sure however of their 1st pick has recovered from injury yet. Then again, he's a young Dman, and would not make a huge impact just yet.

The short season upsets me. The NHL passed NFL as my favorite sport to watch, it sucks that I can't enjoy all the games until next season. I don't have enough hockey, and it doesn't help that during the short season your team is playing like crap and pretty much suck.

It's a shame we lost such a huge chunk of the season over negotiations. And I am certainly Not bringing this up to be discussed again, given the sports world talked about it for at least 4 months, day after flippin day!

But it does taint the season.......(ha ha) unless my team wins!!! 48 games is hardly a season, not to mention the teams had very little time to prepare, which means we saw a poor quality of play for the first week or two.

Hockey is a great game.......expecially when it's end to end, and few stoppages. Few sports can deliver that continuous action, when it's right. Having played hockey since I was a kid, whether it be on the ice or street hockey, and watching Hockey Night In Canada since the 50s, the love affair has never died......but a hastily put together 48 game season is unfortunate.

I hear you. But I'm not even gonna use the shortened season as an excuse for the Red Wings play. They suck right now and are looking like they will miss the playoffs for the first time in 21 years. Sure they and everyone else didn't get a lot of time to prepare. But Detroit didn't have a back-up plan to their back-up plan. The back-up plan when Lidstrom retired was to sign Suter or Praise. We got neither, Detroit didn't have a plan in place if they couldn't get either. Then Tomas retired, they was no back-up plan other than signing old vets that wouldn't start on other team and move Franzen into the position of screening the goalie. Yeah the season is tainted, but the product on Ice from some teams is the team itself fault.

That's why I like hockey, it seems like even with a stupid commish, the game on Ice is still the same. Stupid rules and blown calls aren't often. You really can't use the "It's the refs fault" excuse because they generally let them play until a completely obvious penalty needs to be called. It's always entertaining, even 0-0 3rd period games that end in shootouts are entertaining. Baseball nobody wants to watch a 0-0 game.

Over the years I have been a Red Wings fan, especially when we lost our team. They typically made a key move whenever they lost someone important. But as you say, they didn't land one of those players this year, and it is tough losing the vets you lost.

Then again, watching Datsyuk is worth the price of admission!

I can definitely call out the refs a little bit. I guess it's not all their fault though. The new boarding rules and some of the other little things are a joke. If a guy goes into the wall you have to let him go or they're going to call boarding. The Pens had something like 14 penalties against the NJD a week or so back and before that I don't think they had more than 4 in a game. It's definitely not as bad as football, but there's no consistant officiating anywhere in sports.

Just came across this? Thoughts? I like it better than how its setup now, but I want to look into it a bit more later. Interesting if this passes.

Detroit would move into the Eastern Conference (one of them) so they love that.

This also kind of made me think about how I wish Seattle had a team, along with another Canadien team in either Quebec or Halifax.

My only issue with it is Detroit is in Michigan which is mid-west. Might as well keep mid-west teams in the west. But sports now are becoming less about location and more about making money and marketing. Detroit could better market in the east mainly because it'd open more doors to them playing the Penguins and Capitals. A lot of fans are interested in a Pavel Datsyuk vs Ovie game.

I honestly don't care as long as winning is happening and they get to pound the Avs at least twice.

I don't think the Hawks will win the cup. Not down playing what they are doing, they are playing great. Just don't think they'll win it.Around here it is cup or bust after this start. What I like about this team is their one game at a time mentality.

Anything can happen in the playoffs, but this team is playing alot like the cup winning one. These are very similar teams.

Lot less travel if this is approved.......plus we'll be solid by next year. Went 4 of 5 on the road, which is a signal that this team is coming round. Evander Kane is playing high intensity hockey and if he continues to mature, he can be a future super star.

It definitely works out well for the Jets! And what I really notice is that it works great for TV and thats what the NHL needs to continue working on, their TV deals.

Kane is an interesting young man. Just when he ticks off some of us, he starts making us happier with his energetic/talented play. I think the issue with him is age-related. He gets into some hot water occasionally, but otherwise he comes across as a bright, fun guy, who really wants to be the best he can be. Anze Kopitar took a shot at Brendan Smith's head, the refs didn't calling it. That's not even what I'm upset about, though all the fans keeping bringing it up. I more upset that once again Jimmy Howard is beat in a one on one situation. Howard is so inconstant. One night he'll give you the most amazing saves you've seen, the next he looks stupid.

Seems like every year the NHL, via the refs, have to make a point regarding the officiating of the game. Last year it was that stupid slashing call, whenever a player got touched on the stick and dropped it to the ice, like he was hit by a rocket. As soon as it happened - 2 minutes, even if the guy hardly got slashed at all. AUTOMATIC penalty. I believe they are easing up this year on that one.

BUT this year it's the faceoffs.......how many faceoffs involve one player getting removed for an infraction of some sort? JUST DROP THE PUCK!!! Sure enough, as soon as the alternate comes in, the ref drops the puck quickly.

DROP THE FLIPPIN PUCK!!!!(Otherwise 2 minutes to the ref for delay of game...:thumb:)

Happened a few times during Wings games. One of the new rules is that you can't push the puck with your glove. You know most players will fall to their knees to hit the puck with the end of the stick or glove? Now it's a penalty if you do it with your glove. Why that's a new penalty no one knows. It didn't hurt the game, it didn't slow it down. It was a tactic all the teams used.

Hey gang (maybe you've discussed before) but isn't it time to change the rules on how many points a game is worth, as in, lets make every game a 3 pointer? I am not a fan of having 2 points for a clean win (no O/T), but 3 points for an O/T game. Too many games are tied, and too many teams are getting 1 point for losing in O/T. Time for a change.

Make every game worth 3 points, and give 3 points for a clean win. That way teams will push harder for wins in regular time, which would add intensity to the game. And yes, O/T is exciting, but by only giving 1 point for a loss you minimize the value of losing.

It's nuts that some games are worth 3 points and the rest are worth 2. Makes no sense. It just worked as a way to manage O/T initially. It's time to move on. The onus should be in regular time.

InsaneBlaze23
03-03-2013, 01:23 PM
Very disappointing lost.
Detroit should have won that game, but they shot themselves in the foot twice back to back. I was gonna point at the refs not calling anything on Chicago in the 2 periods, but I'm not gonna post blame on them when Johnathan Ericsson makes such a bonehead mistake, then Johan Franzen does the same exact thing. Plus he kept screwing up plays. It also didn't help that Drew Miller played selfishly out there. Had a 2 on one situation, a easy goal if he would have passed it. But no, he wanted to finish it off.

With all that said, Crawford is some kind of best. Wish Detroit had a goalie in net like him, dude is a monster and the sole reason on Chicago's side of the ice for them winning.

Hopefully the Avs can shut them down, I don't care about the dame points record. Just get the win Avs.

Sorry about the loss......I hate when my team takes a delay of game penalty. It's just too dang easy for refs to call!!!

As for game points......do you agree that all games should have the same points available?

Other comment related to shootouts. Kane is a real talent, but I think they need to change the rules so that you can't slow down amost to a standstill on a penalty shot. That's not realistic in a game situation. A shootout should require that a player is moving at a speed that would not be easily caught up to in a game situation. It would be a hard one to call, but I think a goalie has less chance when a player can basically mess with them, from close in. It's not realistic, unless of course the other team all fell down on the breakaway.

Yeah I think the points idea you have is good and fair.

As for the shootout, the out come of the Wings game isn't even why I think shootouts are stupid. That was actually Detroit's first shootout lost this season. They are usually good at it, but I just think Hockey would be better with a shootout. The puck actually stopped moving for a sec during his shot, somebody was saying how the puck can't stop. But like most of the game, the Hawks got away with it.

I never thought the shootout loss today was the reason you responded that way. Having Datsyuk is imposing enough, in a positive way (for you).

Lets be clear.......I love hockey, and The NHL has been pretty smart keeping the game at such a high level. BUT every year there seem to be a couple of rule related things that need to be worked on. And the general consensus is that that refs are not at their best this year. I already mentioned the obsession with slowing the game down with those stupid faceoff violations, which could mostly be avoided with quicker puck drops. And for me, the unequal game point values is ridiculous. And with that, I am not big on shootouts, unless the game has gone on for too long. Try to settle it in regular time (with added incentive of an extra point for a win), or do your best to end it in O/T without having to get to the shootout. That could be done by adding 5 minutes to the O/T period, or even consider going 3 on 3 after the first five minutes.

An eastern conference team will win the Cup this year.:coffee:As of now, almost halfway through the season there is no team in either conference that can stay with the Hawks. This years team is better than the one that won the cup. This team is just as good on offense, better on defense, and is better in goal. The depth on this Hawks team is amazing, with two outstanding lines and two good ones, the defense goes seven deep, and two goaltenders that will matchup with anyone. Unless there is a beast in the east who is better in goal, plays better defense, and can stop the Hawks puck possession, it will be tough to beat them. As of yet that team has not shown up in either the East or West yet.

But no, Chicago will not win the cup, they are peaking way to early....whoever finishes hot will win it.

See LA Kings....in regular season, no one gave them a chance. In post season...best team hands down.

InsaneBlaze23

As of now, almost halfway through the season there is no team in either conference that can stay with the Hawks.

Besides their record and their goalie, there isn't anything impressive about the Blackhawks. They aren't blowing teams away, they are winning nail biters that could have gone any way. They are in these nails biters vs not so good team. I bet even the Avs will keep it a 1 goal game if they lose.

I'd take the Flyers, Bruins, Penguins, and Habs over any team in the Western Conference. The Ducks will win another Cup before the Hawks.

You can't undervalue Toews/Kane/Hossa. I think they're running out of steam, though, and will lose soon. It's a shame they don't play the Pens. Would be an epic cup series.

The game was never really as close as it seemed. A real flukey goal that rainbowed over Fleury's head got them the lead, and the 3rd was with 20 seconds left and six skaters, but Stamkos made a nice play. Malkin put up the highlight of the week and then Crosby put a nice one up himself. I'm just glad everyone is healthy for the most part finally.

Marty needs to get back soon definitely. It's gonna be tough to make the playoffs in the east, like every team in the northeast has 30 points. At the very least stay ahead of Philly :)

When we lost The Jets, many of us here lost a lot of interest in watching the game (usually in the playoffs and not a lot during the season). Luckily we got a team back. Given your location, I assume Vancouver's the home team, but regardless, it's not the same as having your own local team. At least that's my take.

If I watch any team it's the flames. They were a true home team for 8 years and I got to be there for that run to the finals 9-10 years ago. Can't stand Vancouver.

Heard on NHL live that Staal is expected to make a full recovery. I think some players(including him) will start wearing visors, but I don't think they will become mandatory unless something serious enough happens that forces the NHL to make them mandatory.

During the Wings-BlackHawks game, Damien Brunner dived head first in front of a puck to block it. Lucky for him it hit his shoulder pad. It looked like it was really close to hitting his face.

Haha, King Kunitz is #2 now in goal scoring I think, he's been a beast this year on pace to shatter his career best and in this short season. He's actually one of my favorite players I've had his jersey since after the trade for him years ago and I've gotten to meet him a few times. He's not incredibly skilled or talented but he's one of the more underrated and hardest-working players in the nhl. Definitely one of the best in front of the net. Doesn't hurt that he plays with Sid. That's his second HT this year.

I don't like it but I do like it. I don't like it because Michigan is a midwest state, thus should be in the western conference. Plus aside from the Original Six, Detroit has no rivals in the East.

What I do like about it is the fact that once more the original Six(not including Chicago) will get to play each other. Detroit had a hard time the last few years because of traveling. Though Michigan is a midwest state, Detroit is close to the east coast. It was hard on the team having to travel from Detroit to Chicago, back to Detroit then to Denver, then to Columbus, then to Anaheim. It's quicker for Detroit to get to any location on the east coast than Cali and Colorado.

On a side note, they will suck in the East because the East has better teams and beast players. But we do get to see Datsyuk undress Ovie.

You won't get any defensive argument out of me about the Wings. They suck, I know they suck, I don't deny they suck.

You know who doesn't suck? The Penguins. Even without Malkin and Letang they're still top 3. I just want to give everyone a hard time because I don't get a lot of opportunities to gloat about things :D
