Not sure which because he does things that don't make sense. In the SD game, he should have slowed things down and run the clock down instead of keeping the same pace. It allowed SD to come right down the field and get the field goal.

PS - I think he's very arrogant as well.

After watching this game, it would seem like most teams should beat the Chiefs. They certainly aren't scoring because of their offense. They should have 28-30 points by now. They can't get 3rd downs, been in the red zone like 6 times and have only scored FG because of TO's.

Well yes, but there defense is pretty good. Granted Eagles have hurt themselves, but Chiefs has forced some turnovers and get good pressure. It is there defense that can keep them in games and beat the lesser teams, but not the high powered teams.

you mean like the Eagles how scored 30 and 33 points their first 2 games? Dallas scored 36 week 1 and KC held them to 17. KC has aonly allowed 36 points in 3 games. That's pretty impressive and anyone who under estimates their defense is foolish.

Once the Eagles implement roughly 100 alternate uniforms with glow in the dark paint and holograms on the helmets, they'll restock on good recruits. Give it time.

Also, the Eagles OLine is absolutely horrible. I don't think this is indicative of what Houston and Hali are going to do for the rest of the year. They're good, no doubt, but not that good. That, and it's going to be a lot harder to disguise blitz against Peyton than Vick.

you mean like the Eagles how scored 30 and 33 points their first 2 games? Dallas scored 36 week 1 and KC held them to 17. KC has aonly allowed 36 points in 3 games. That's pretty impressive and anyone who under estimates their defense is foolish.

I said in the first sentence how good the defense looked. Dallas and Philly aren't good teams. KC hasn't played one good defense yet. When they play a team that won't let them move the ball so easily, with an offense like ours, that defense will get tired and they will get beat. So far they've beaten a very average team, arguably the worst defense in the league, and arguably the worst team in the league. Sure they're looking better, but I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Them Chiefs are a better team, no doubt. That defense looks really good. Justin Houston as quickly become one of my favorite players in the NFL to watch. Just nasty, I would love to have him.

Still, they have yet to beat a good team, and I am not sold on their prospects for the long run. Alex Smith just cannot win you a game, and I guarantee they are blown out by high powered offenses.

How many teams have a "high powered" offense and a defense good enough to stuff everything we do? Not too many, so we are what a boarder line top 10 team (being generous), which I dont think anyone is selling them to be more.

The Eagles gift wrapped them 6 points due to a muffed punt and a botched snap.

The defense is good but not elite elite, offense is incredibly predictable.

KC did nothing to cause that.

And they still almost lost.

Very true. Their defense has shown flashes of being able to hang with anybody in the past, they just have to be consistent. The GB game of 2011 is the best example, they had a lot of the same players then and may be even better this year.

A guarantee that they will get blown out by high powered offenses is nonsense, plain and simple. In 2011, the Packers had maybe the most high powered offense in history and they held them to 14, and they have a lot of the same players from that team. Their defense is real good, they aren't going to have to win a shoot out to beat Denver. Good defenses end up finding ways to hold down high powered pass attacks with no running game many times. They know they won't stop every receiver, so they scheme to stop the QB.

KC looks pretty good IMO

sure their offense are not world beaters but they seem to have a pretty good defense and smith isnt turning the ball over, which is the key.

i think if they can make it to the playoffs with their good defense, running game, and smith taking care of the football, they could possibly do some damage.

especially in the weak AFC. that pains me to say that too, trust me. :ugh:

This. Even my buddy whose a chiefs fan was calling Alex Smith, "Admiral Checkdown." Chiefs are a good team and overall much improved, but you won't beat the top teams with that style. The Broncos also will have a very good defense when Von is back on the field and teams like the Chiefs stand little chance against Manning if they can't put up more points. Manning is going to get Points. Can the Chiefs pace him? Maybe, but it won't be enough unless Alex Smith starts pulling the trigger and stops with the constant checkdowns.

Don't use the points they put up against the Eagles as your argument. The Eagles defense is awful, and their offense turned the ball over 5 times, the Chiefs should have scored a lot more points than that but consistently stalled. Dwayne Bowe is your big #1 WR and you can't get him the ball more than once? That's a QB issue if you ask me. Manning ALWAYS finds a way to get DT the ball, even if he's seeing a lot of coverage. Manning and CO. will put up 50+ if the Eagles turn the ball over like that next week.

The chiefs are miles better. However, with Smith they will be that team in limbo flirting with the playoffs and not getting a high draft pick. Smith wont lose them games, but he wont win them either. The chiefs made a lateral move offensively evetywhere but QB. I feel Albert will leave and they will be stuck with nothing but players getting older.

I watched this game and it was terrible. It was worse than a shirts-skins game at an office picnic. Neither team has an imposing offense and other than the Eagles secondary playing a good zone, there was very little positive to say. The Eagles secondary cannot tackle. The Eagles Center must have been high and Vick could not hit the broad side of a barn with his passing. KC has some descent players, but their game plan sucked. I think Bowe had ONE catch. If I was the Broncos, I would consider sitting Manning after the first half against both these teams.

not saying they are going to the SB but i can see them possibly getting to the playoffs and even winning a game or two maybe.

remember what conference they play in, they have a realistic chance to get into the playoffs in the AFC. but then again i guess it would depend on the seeding as well.

I don't, you won't beat top teams dinking and dunking all game.

Dinking and dunking is how NE used to own Pittsburgh's defense, the short passes killed them as an easy example. There is a sound philosophy to it, in that it helps aide you in clock control and getting first downs when your run game isn't working, it is a way to get skill players in 1 on 1s running the ball. That, and it keeps defenses honest when you run.

If it's done well, it can work. I agree that you won't win shoot outs that way, but if your defense plays decent you can win putting up 24ish points. People often say you won't win when your defense fails you with that philosophy, and they're not wrong, but they're misguided because you are unlikely to beat anybody when your defense gets shredded regardless of what style your offense plays.

Kansas City has a good defense, they don't have to win shoot outs.

Indeed, the Ravens won 3 playoff games from 08-09 while never completing more than 11 passes in a playoff game. It didn't stop their fans from thinking it made their QB legit, lol but that's a whole other thread.

Plus, Smith is actually a decent passer, people are acting like they have Tim Tebow. Top notch defense, good running game, decent QB should give them a good team. Smith is better than Sanchez and Flacco were their first 2 years.

I suppose people have different views on KC on here than in real life?

No one expects us to be a top 5 team, so the fact that we won't beat elite teams or great offenses with solid defenses means that we are what, exactly what we look like? A top 10 to 15 team.

ERoyal, what teams can we simply "not beat" in the AFC outside of Denver? Alex Smith's dink and dunk will be just that. He moves the chains 10 yards at a time down the field without making mental mistakes. It's not elite, it's not fascinating, but it effective enough to complement a good run game. No one is talking SB with the Chiefs, no is even talking 13 wins, so I don't see how they're overrated in the sense that they will be exactly what they look like.

Moves the Chains? He struggled to move the chains most of the game when passing. The Chiefs success lives and dies with Jamaal Charles running the ball, and playing defense. If you are relying on Alex Smith winning you a shootout at some point in the playoffs, then you are in trouble.

It's been 3 games against the horrendous Jaguars, the overrated Cowboys of the past decade who hover around mediocrity every year, and the turnover prone/don't play defense Eagles. Let's pump the brakes before we start saying that they are contenders in the AFC.

250 rush yards, 60 some of which was on a Vick scramble and 41 of which were on McCoy's TD that was ran while the defense wasn't set up. Yes they count, but McCoy had three (including the TD) runs of 20+ yards while the defense wasn't set up because of Chip Kelly's offense and Vick had one big broken play. Hardly a cause of concern. I wouldn't say the Broncos of '11 over achieved, their style just meant they would win close which is why they never beat anyone handily. They just were able to get a home playoff game at 8-8 and did won, no one expected them to make the SB.

An Alex Smith team came near making the SB in 2011, and may very well have if not for 2 fumbles on returns.

So it is the supporting cast then, not simply because Smith is the QB?

If you have a good running game, you can win dinking and dunking. Clock control limits possessions for the other team, your offense can score some points, defense plays at least like a bend but don't break defense.

It makes it so you don't have to win a shoot out. Of course, if your defense breaks then it won't work well for you, but then again not much well. Every formula has it's faults, the Giants have shown both the Packers and the Pats the flaw in the formula of pass heavy, no defense or run game formula. Good defenses figure out how to hold those types of offenses down.

for an up and coming team with a brand new coach after winning only 2 games the year before, making the playoffs means a lot actually. even when the broncos did it with tebow that was an accomplishment, even though they backed in.

this year the chiefs would likely have to get a WC birth and likely wont be able to just back in. there just isn't a lot of good teams in the AFC.

they could get to the playoffs and beat another team that's really not much better than they are. if they were in the NFC this would be an entirely different discussion.

We won't need 40 to beat KC. 20-23 is more than enough with KC's dink and dunk offense.

A better question is how is KC gonna score enough to beat Denver?

I'm talking about the muffed punt and a botched snap, KC did nothing to force those. They got 6 off those IIRC.

And KC won by 10 and missed a makeable FG.

It honestly sounds like your upset because we have improved, no we will not win a SB and even a playoff win would be huge. Your arguing that we are overrated because people call them a Wild Card contender, which I don't see how they are if you can only name 6 teams better in the AFC. I know you'll say that's not it, but it really comes across that way.

Well, you can't win a SB being a game manager.

And Ben made huge plays with his arm to help them win those SB's.

KC has a good D but is hardly the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens by any means.

Given the way the league is now, you can't win playing ball control, and defense. Just not possible.

KC may get in the playoffs but they aren't going very far.

Big Ben was the very definition of a game manager, just because you can scramble around and not be sacked then make a throw doesn't mean you are not a game manager.

So did Philly.

I honestly don't care if they are improved, it's good for the division when all the teams are solid.

I've said before I won't be surprised if they make the playoffs but not going to go very far.

Check his numbers during their first run, pretty damn good.

A game manager is a Orton/Smith type.

Yes, you can. You just have the idea in your head that you can't win the Super Bowl being a game manager, and thus use it to claim QBs who win the Super Bowl must not be game managers even if they played just like one.

Ben completed NINE whopping passes in their first Super Bowl, and had a 22.6 rating. Yes, he made a great play on a 3rd and 28 conversion, one play doesn't mean your above a game manager level. Brady only threw for 145 yards in his first Super Bowl, and played more like a GM from 01-04, became elite in 2005.

Ben threw for less than 200 yards per game in 2005, and barely over 200 in 2008. How did you figure numbers would support your argument?

In the 2005 playoffs he completed 14 passes versus CIN, 14 versus IND and 9 in the SB. He played very well in the DEN game, decent in the first 2, terrible in the Super Bowl. In the first 2, that's very game manager like.

In the 2008 playoffs he played well in the Super Bowl, but mediocre versus the only good defense they face in the Ravens.

You can win playing ball control and defense, if you do it well. Sure the league has changed, but if your defense can at least play decent, and your offense can drive down field methodically, you can win games that way. If you limit posessions, and can score at least in the 20s while doing so, you don't need a monster arial assault to win.

The Chiefs have no shot of keeping up with Denver despite being 5-0. How could they ever beat teams like Dallas who can put up 48 on the great Broncos defense. Offenses like the Bengals and Pats will blow KC out of the water, as they both showed on Sunday. Defense never makes a difference :D

They put up 19 points on offense, it is putrid.

They probably lose if not for that fluke punt fumble early in the game, not to mention Locker plays, they lose.

They'll probably make the playoffs, but not going very far.

And they only allowed 17 points on defense. Last time I checked, 19 > 17.

Probably lose? Even taking away the 7 points from that, we still win. It's not as if the Titans were going to march down the field easily and score.

You missed the point, it wasn't just that game. The general point of the post was, defense makes a big difference. People look at teams who put up 40 burgers and say the Chiefs can't keep up with them in a shoot out, and ignore the point that the Chiefs defense isn't going to give up those points.

With that thinking, you look at the Dallas-Denver game, 51-48..no way the Chiefs could keep up with those teams, yet they already did beat Dallas, they had a good defense and held DAL to 16, not 48. Denver is also apparently a team with defensive holes.

The Bengals and New England example was to show that it's not like teams like that will score too much for KC. They just played a 13-6 game, each team has a good defense, good defenses can keep them down.

There's no reason they can't go far in the playoffs, no team is too much for them. If they played NE it probably would be a close defensive battle, with NEs great D. KCs defense is playing consistently now, we've seen flashes of how good they can be in past years(when they had a lot of the same players)like in 2011 holding GB to 14, last year they held DEN to only 17, and BAL to only 9. Consistency was their problem, which seems to be fixed

Let's do some math.

Take away the 7 points from KC, add 3 to Ten assuming they kick a FG instead of go for it on 4th down.

That would be 20-19 Tenn, so....

That changes the entire complex of that game, and Tenn had a backup QB in the game.

KC don't look very convincing. Its hard to take a team seriously when they are scraping by a Fitzpatrick led Tennessee team.

I've seen this before, a good D pulling out tight W's and helping out a very limited O.

They look in good shape for a wildcard but are light years from Denver and any hopes of challenging for the West are not very realistic IMO.

The Chiefs D is good, but its not SF or Seattle good.

This team looks a replica of the last Chiefs team who went to the playoffs. A good, solid D and a game manager who beat up on a soft schedule and then looked completely out of place when the playoffs began.

And if KC actually tries to score a TD instead of kicking a FG at the end of the game..

Or if I had wings and played on the Chiefs offense..

At the end of the day, our defense did what it does.. Give up less points than our limited offense scores.

It may be about time we stop repeating the same lines over and over again about the Chiefs. At this point, they are 5-0, if they beat Denver once, then they may very well contend for the division. The Titans aren't looking too bad really, and the difference in Locker and Fitzpatrick isn't astounding, some teams just play well without their QB.

We've seen a Super Bowl team barely scrape by or lose to worse teams than Tennessee nearly every year lately....'12 Ravens only beat the 2-14 Chiefs by 3, '11 Giants were swept by the 5-11 Skins and barely skid by MIA during their 0-7 start....'10 Packers lost to the 6-10 Redskins '09 Saints needed a miracle to beat the 4-12 Skins, 08 Steelers barely skid by the Browns in CLE, '07 Giants almost lost to 1-15 MIA.

Basically, barely beating an average team isn't a sign that you suck considering every SB team the last 6 years has barely skid by or lost to a 6-10 or worse team.

Denver gave up 48 points to Dallas, I'm betting KC will find some holes in their defense. They won't let Denver score 51. I see KC beating DEN once at least.

Their D is better than it was in 2010, and Smith is a bit better than Cassell.

No probs with you being a KC believer. Me personally am not. I think Denver wins the division by 3-4 games (KC helped by their schedule to get it that close and beats the Chiefs twice.

I think KC are pretty decent and a wildcard team, they are not close to the true elite teams in the league IMO

If I was ranking them in a power poll it would be around 10.

The only result apart from Denver I care about is NE. Its a straight shoot-out for homefield.

Fair points but Eli and Flacco are much better than Smith is.

And all those QB's, was talking with a Chiefs fan last night.

They aren't bad enough to suck but aren't good enough to reach the mountain top. Basically in the middle, worst spot to be.

Take out Hali, Houston, Flowers, Derrick Johnson, and Sean Smith, how does KC do, my guess not very good.

You have a point but KC doesn't have the weapons to beat us through the air that Dallas does.

Oh yeah, we have that Von Miller guy coming back, I hear he is pretty good.

Oh, and Fitz is a huge downgrade from Locker.

Regards to beating us, they are gonna have to put up at a bare minimum of 24-27+ and if the defense is anywhere near full strength, i don't see that happening.

I doubt NE will be in the homefield race, they didn't look so great versus the Bengals. They're still a good team, but they aren't elite. They were 4-0 due to their schedule. TB is winless, Buffalo isn't good, they just edged past the Jets, and from how ATL is playing that win may not be that impressive either.

Chiefs won't put up 48, but they'll put up something good. Plus, I'm willing to bet that at least in KC they will get a few picks of Manning they may return for TDs considering how good they are at turnovers and how pass heavy Denver is. Your basically saying without their 5 most key defensive players they wouldn't look too good, I figure most teams would suffer with the loss of their 5 most key defensive players.

The SB teams may have had better QBs, but the main point there was that playing a mediocre team close doesn't mean your not a contender. Every SB winning team the last 6 years, and really most teams since the 2000s have had a close game with a bad team at least once, bad teams at times have a good day against a top level team.

Fitz is better than you think he is, he's really not that terrible of a QB.

Im saying you're basing this Dallas game off that when our top five guys on defense were out. And Alex can't make many of the throws Romo did that game or avoid pressure that Romo did. Alex has a terrible pocket presence, once someone gets near him, he's sacked.

They may get a turnover or so in KC but that's pretty much how they will need to win. If we don't turn it over much, they won't beat us provided health of course.
