Just saw on ESPN he passed away from cancer at age 54. God rest his soul. Great hitter and greater ambassador for the game of baseball. Thankful I got to see him play.

I don't like, as I'm getting older, seeing us losing the players I watched when I was a kid.

Best wishes to his family, friends, and fans. May be hrest in peace.

Great guy. One the few opposing players you couldn't bring yourself to dislike no matter the situation.

i was shocked to hear he passed away. he is by far my favorite baseball player of all time. everything they say about him off the field is true. when i was a young boy in the early 80's i had surgery and he (along with a few other players) came to visit me in the hospital and signed a get well card for me, i will never forget that.

RIP tony, you will be missed! :(

My daughter took batting lessons from one of his former coaches, Greg Riddoch who coached Gwynn as Manager of the Padres in the early 90's. I remember Greg talking a lot about Tony Gwynn saying that Tony was probably the smartest player he has ever coached and his team mates and coaches really thought highly of him.

I was quite surprised to learn this and believe he left a void in humanity in his passing. RIP.
