I get the whole brand recogntion thing and not wanting to give that up....

Why not be something honorable like "The Washington Marines"....or some other military connotation. How cool would it be to have camouflage colors for a uniform.

Changing the name could be a financial windfall for Snyder.

Desert cammies? No thx. Now, the red, blue, gold combination could be worked out, possibly. The problem there, is you have basically the same theme going as the Patriots. Minus the contradictory method for running the team that resembles communism, of course.

Changing the name would have to be something similar, I think. "Warpath" or something. That, or a tribe indigenous to the area. The problem there is The Washington Piscataways doesn't roll of the tongue at all. Nothing like the Fla St Seminoles does.

I'm of native American descent; what's wrong with them staying the "Redskins"? No one seemed to object too much to my ancestors calling you Europeans "white eyes" or "gray eyes" ....

If people with nothing better to do would just shut up, the whole controversy would go away. Too many people out there whose own business is so unimportant and unfulfilling that they have to stick their uninvited noses into everyone else's business. How shallow does one's life have to be that one needs to INVENT a problem where no problem exists, ignoring REAL problems all around that need to be addressed?

Redskins, Seminoles, Chiefs, Indians ..... there are probably some Brits and Canadians somewhere that find "Patriots" offensive. Maybe New England should be forced to change its team name, too? Maybe rename them the "colonial rebels" or "traitorous tax scofflaws" .....

Ridiculous. Idiocracy isn't just a movie; it's turned into a fact-based documentary.

Let me ask you something. If the Redskins changed their name to "Warriors", would that be just as offensive/unoffensive, because it would be stereotyping Native Americans as war mongers or more accurately, people who are identifiable with war?

I already told you, but for the record, great post.:thumb:

(This is probably going to be regarded as TOO political, but .... ) It would be grammatically incorrect, as well as outright misleading, to use "Warriors" in ANY context regarding anything or anyone inside or near the DC beltway.

lol. Fair enough. The reason I brought it up, is because I heard that was one of the leading candidates for a replacement.

The NBA's Golden State Warriors (Chokeland) might have a copyright infringement case tucked away somewhere .... ;)

I would find it objectionable for just the reason you mention earlier. My people fought with each other before the "white eyes" invaded our multiple nations. We didn't become "warriors" as the white man defines it until the US Army started burning our encampments, slaughtering even our women, children, and horses, and finally tried to starve us out of existence by killing off every single buffalo they could find. Genocide at its finest, yet my people were called "savages"?!?!?!?!?!

I totally agreed to many morons with nothing else to do in their life's IMO.

If someone is upset about it they have the option of turning the game off and eventually if enough folks do that he and the NFL gets the message. IF They care

They should go find something important to do with their life like spousal abuse, elder care, kiddy porn.

Stay out of the polices way obey the law

The only people who have a right to raise a stink about team names would be the native Americans themselves. Has anyone seen an out-pouring of "Occupy NFL Team Names Street" anywhere? No? I didn't think so. We're too busy with the Trail of Tears, Wounded Knee, toxic chemicals left behind in California by the (original) '49'ers, and the US Supreme Court ruling in Cherokee Nation vs Hitchcock.

All those white eyes need to shut up, go back to the bar at the country club, order a martini, and have another affair with yet another neighbor's wife. They seem to be especially efficient at those .....

I disagree. I owe a great deal of my freedom and civil liberties not only to the brothers and sisters that came before me but the many Americans NOT of African descent that made their voices heard and fought for change.

The thought that it's silly and a waste of time to find offense in the name is a viewpoint of those not impacted by it. I guarantee nobody feels fine openly referring to or directly calling a Native American a Redskin.

Anyway back to original point, there's a great variety of names they could choose from and still be billionaires

Your "guarantee" is worthless, as is your opinion that "nobody feels fine." I, and a couple of others in this thread, ARE of native American ancestry -- as well as the bulk of native Americans of ALL tribal nations that still exist -- DO feel absolutely fine with the term. The only ones who apparently have a problem with the name "Redskins" are white eyes, the same people who tried to annihilate my people from the time they first set foot in this land and won't be happy until we're all just a footnote in some history books.

You don't find it the least bit interesting and confusing that there isn't a massive native American protest movement over native American-sounding sports teams' names? that the only people who have a problem with it are white eyes? That ALONE should have you looking for the white eyes' hidden agenda .....

Some bored-to-death white people decided that it would be "cool" and mega-politically-correct to remove anything that even remotely resembles reference to native Americans in sports teams' names. Most native Americans are laughing their butts off at the white man's pathetic attempt at "caring" and "concern" for the red man's plight in this country. If they're so interested in our welfare and well-being, start by honoring the dozens and dozens of treaties they have broken with my people over the past 250 years. Try this little tidbit on for size as an example of how "concerned" and "caring" the white man is for native Americans:

Sergeant First Class John Raymond Rice (Native American name: Walking in Blue Sky) (April 25, 1914 – September 6, 1950) was a Ho Chunk (Winnebago) Indian and a United States Army soldier killed in action while leading his squad in Korea in 1950. A Sioux City, Iowa cemetery refused to bury his body because he was Native American, touching off a national episode culminating in President Harry Truman ordering his body to be interred in Arlington National Cemetery.
It took an order from the President of the United States to allow a native American, who died fighting for the United States, to be buried!!!!

I stand corrected. People who feel fine referring to Natives as redskins are those who don't have respect for them. You mean to tell me if a neighbor pointed at you and referred to you as a group of redskins, you'd be perfectly fine with that? How come you refer to yourself as Native instead of redskin? When you fill out applications, How would you like to check off a box that says "redskin". Do you have any kids? How would you feel if your son or daughter came home from school and told you they have nobody to play with because kids in his class said they don't play with redskins? Let's be honest, that name is derogatory in origin.

The only aspect of your attitude I appreciate is your tolerance and patience. The word isn't as powerful when people don't respond to it like we do when called the N word.

I am descendent from redskins. And because I have no problem with that word, you think I don't respect my people, my ancestors? That's a special kind of stupid, isn't it? Or do you look similarly at ANYONE who doesn't see problems where no problems actually exist?

You mean to tell me if a neighbor pointed at you and referred to you as a group of redskins, you'd be perfectly fine with that?
I might, or I might not; that's irrelevant. What's relevant is that I don't need some white eye/paleface telling me when or if I need to feel offended. Especially when I don't feel offended. They need to mind their own business and let me and my people mind ours.

How come you refer to yourself as Native instead of redskin?
Personal preference. You have a problem with that choice being available to me?

When you fill out applications, How would you like to check off a box that says "redskin".
I'd LOVE it; make it so. I know a lot of others of my people would like the idea, too ... if for no other reason, than to rub white peoples' noses in the fact that we're still here.

Do you have any kids? How would you feel if your son or daughter came home from school and told you they have nobody to play with because kids in his class said they don't play with redskins?
Hey, it took a presidential order to let one of us get buried. Not being allowed to play with white eyes' kids would probably keep my peoples' kids from getting infected by white eyes' hypocrisy.

Let's be honest, that name is derogatory in origin.
Yes; let's be honest. Unless you're a member of one of the tribal nations, it's none of your damned business what we find or don't find to be derogatory. We're perfectly capable of making that determination for ourselves, thank you very much. We don't need to have some other ethnicity DICTATE to us what is/isn't derogatory.

Or are you're one of those who still think we're just ignorant savages who must be protected from ourselves? Good think-um, white eyes; me go wigwam, smoke peace-pipe, make-um squaw weave blanket, make-um shiny beads.

The only aspect of your attitude I appreciate is your tolerance and patience. The word isn't as powerful when people don't respond to it like we do when called the N word.
Maybe if more people were similarly tolerant and patient, fewer people would be at other peoples' throats and we could actually get something meaningful accomplished. If my people have no problem with "redskins" that is not carte blanche for any other ethnicity to have a problem with the word "redskins."

You fight the good fight against the "N" word; and I hope you have 100% success getting it eradicated. Let the tribal nations fight against what WE feel is derogatory; if we need help in the fight, we'll ask for it. But NEVER dictate to us what is/isn't derogatory.
