It might've been him I was thinking of. Both teams had three guys out so you can't really say either team was at a disadvantage in my opinion.

Tyson Chandler was the other.

If the Western Conference works out the way the Denver Nuggets want, they'll open the playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks.

After losing to the Nuggets on Wednesday night, the Mavericks are only one game ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder for the third seed in the West with four regular season games remaining. As a division champion, the Thunder would have the tiebreaker despite losing the season series to Dallas.

Nuggets head coach George Karl says he would prefer to face the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs.

More Podcasts
"If we had to pick and choose on it, we would probably say 55 percent Dallas, 45 percent Oklahoma City, only because Oklahoma City is athletic like we are and they have two great players," Denver coach George Karl told Ian Fitzsimmons of ESPN 103.3 FM's Galloway and Company, referring to Thunder forward Kevin Durant and point guard Russell Westbrook. "They have two All-Stars who are really in their prime and have never won on the playoff stage. I just think right now our speed might have more effect against Dallas than it will against Oklahoma City."

The Mavericks, who have lost their last four games and are 8-9 since a 21-1 run, are slumping as the postseason approaches. Dallas has lost its last nine games against West playoff teams.

"I personally like to be in a better mode of winning more games than probably Dallas," Karl said. "I like winning to be your partner going into the playoffs. Some coaches don't, but I personally think you don't have to win every game, but you want to be at least in a winning mode.

"I will give the benefit of the doubt that the Mavericks are a veteran, older team that understands the playoffs. I think they'll be energized for the playoffs."

Karl, who mentioned that the Nuggets would have the "luxury" to double-team off of Shawn Marion, believes that the Mavericks are a less difficult team to defend than the Thunder because Dallas is a single-dimensional offensive threat. Led by sweet-shooting power forward Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks rank 28th in the league in points in the paint and 26th in the league in free throws attempted.

"In a lot of ways, I think their strength is their weakness," Karl said. "Their strength is they have tremendous ability to score by making jump shots. They are the best jump shooting team in the NBA by far. [Coach Rick] Carlisle is a very good offensive guy in getting good shots and tricking teams into open shots. They're very unselfish in finding the open man and getting open jump shots.

"In some sense, the jump shot doesn't go in as much as scoring in the paint. The two things I would say is I wish Dallas would score more in the paint and get to the free throw line more."

Tim MacMahon covers the Mavericks for ESPNDallas.com.

Stupid thing to say by George, I don't get it.

Is he trying to piss of the Mavericks?

Now, I definitely don't want to see them....

Yeah, that comment doesn't make much sense... It pisses off Dallas, and gives OKC the confidence of knowing we would rather face someone else... Come on GK!

Two 5 wins and the seed is locked up. Or a win and a Hornets and Blazers loss.

But its not like the 5 seed was ever in question.

If OKC goes 3-1 down the stretch they will be the 3 seed IMO. So for those who wanted the Mavs, Congrats I believe its a strong chance we get them.

It will be a great series whoever we play, IMO I would rather play the Mavericks our fast paced style of play and depth can cause them more problems I weould love to see Kidd try and keep up with Lawson for 4 quarters:D. I think we can beat either team, but the thunder are younger and more athletic. Plus I don't care who you are you don't wanna play durant factor in westbrook and perkins and they are a tough team.

We are injured, missing AAA. HUGE loss right there. We are also missing two bigs in Anderson and Mozgov.

Thunder are 100% healthy.

Trust me, I'm not taking them lightly.

It's going to be a hell of a series. I just have a gut feeling we take it in 6. I also really believe we match-up well enough to take it in 6.

I wouldn't mind Dallas either though, but their veteran presence, bench and Dirk scare me more than OKC.

OKC is going to be a legit team for years to come, but they are still young, and don't have much experience. Plus, I want us to develop a real good rivalry with them, and playing them in the playoffs, will do just that.

Very risky, but I agree oddly enough. We can't have our players ice cold going into the playoffs. Who ever can come back for at least the last game, even if just to shoot a few and get used to the speed again, needs to and we just have to hope for the best.

I dont want him to return yet. If he gets hurt again I will be full of rage. Anyway i see the point about going into the playoffs cold. Before his injury he was struggling a bit shooting. He needs to find his stroke. He will be a huge part of our sucess if we are going to win in the playoffs.

I think OKC beats Den in 5, maybe 6 at most.

As for NY/Bos, if it happens, Boston would kill the Knicks. They play no defense, Boston would win in 5, maybe 6.

No, we played one of our worst offensive games since the trade and were missing some key players. And not to be rude, but you already know that the majority of us do not think we will lose to the Thunder. I don't really see the point in asking again. As far as the Knicks, they can't play defense for an entire series. They will be very lucky if they get out of round one.

6 i'd say. I'd fancy our chances against DAL, even the Lakers in current form before OKC, who now have our number. 6 at best.

Boston have sucked lately though, while the knicks have been lights out. Could see them making it through that matchup on that basis, as well as the ever reliable principle that it never rains but pours

hell yeah. gimme the lakers, would be so up for that series. I think we'd be in with a great shot. It's a bit confusing how it works out from here though

remaining games:
DAL: @ HOU, NO
LAL: SAS, @ SAC

OKC have easy games left, @ SAC and MIL

So do we have to hope they both lose out or something? or just one to lose a game?

Either lakers or mavs have to lose out with the thunder winning out, that is if you want to avoid the thunder. I'd rather play the thunder than the lakers.

Hell no, I don't want the Lakers until the WCF.

As for if we get OKC or DAL....I'm pretty sure if we want OKC:

Dallas needs to win 1 more game.

If we want Dallas:

I think Dallas needs to lose out and OKC needs to win out.

That's because I think Dallas has the tie breaker I heard, but I'm not 100% on that one.

Dallas could also fall to fourth - below the Lakers and Oklahoma City - with a loss and Thunder win Wednesday, meaning it would face a Denver team it lost to three times in four meetings.

If it finishes second, it would face New Orleans or Memphis, while finishing third would result in a matchup with Portland. The Mavericks didn't win the season series against any of those teams, splitting four games with the Trail Blazers, losing three of four to the Grizzlies and dropping two of three to the Hornets

OKC for viewing reasons. Would create a great rivalry, a more fun team to watch, just a better series.

Dallas for a better chance to win. I still think we win either series but this one might be easier NOW due to injuries. They are older so that helps. But they also have a great veteran team. Plus, they really would wanna beat us cuz of what GK said. But we generally do pretty good against Dallas, even though Dirk torches us.

I really don't know. I'm split. I'll just take whatever is given.

As good as this coaching staff has been, they have completely mismanaged this injury/preventative injury situation. Guys repeatedly came back too early (AAA) and guys who shouldn't have been playing last night were playing. (Lawson)

We had absolutely nothing to gain by Lawson playing last night, and everything to lose. We're just lucky that his injury wasn't worse.

Did anyone just see the Sportsnation segment? They had some NBA stat guru on; and among the questions they asked him was if the Nuggets could upset the Thunder, and if the Knicks could upset the Celtics. He picked the Nuggets to win based on our margin of victory. Then he switched over to the Knicks/Celtics. He showed the plus/minus of Pierce and Garnett, and then Amare and Carmelo's plus/minus. Amare's was .14 and Carmelo's was negative. Cowherd and Beadles were both shocked and wondering how they made the playoffs, and Cowherd said they should trade both guys for Wilson Chandler.:) I thought it was pretty awesome.

According to Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post, Ty Lawson suffered a left ankle injury during the second quarter of Wednesday night's regular-season finale against the Jazz, and did not return to the game.

Hochman added that coach George Karl said after the game that Lawson should be able to go for Game 1 against the Thunder in the playoffs, and Lawson offered this about his status for the playoffs: "Hopefully. Right now, it's still throbbing so I don't know how it will react, but I should be OK."

If Lawson is unable to play at the beginning of the team's first-round series, Raymond Felton will likely take on a larger role at point guard.

Denver Nuggets vs. Oklahoma City Thunder -- The Thunder, everybody's cool new kid in class, is about to get a wedgie in front of the whole playground. Since the Nuggets traded Melo on Feb. 21, they've been the third-winningest team in the league (.720). They have double-kick-start Tar Heel point guards who can drive, score or feed to six other scorers. Who you gonna guard on the last shot? Nuggets in 7, proving George Karl should've been Coach of the Year.

Did I dream that? So many points are scored at Oklahoma City Arena in Game 2, everybody gets eight tacos.

Denver vs. San Antonio -- The Spurs were a great dynasty, but they are collapsing from within. Their center cannot hold. Tim Duncan will be 35 by this series and wearing down, bone on bone, spitting sawdust, tilting as he walks. The New Nuggets, growing stronger with every week they're together, take the No. 1 offense in the NBA and make it better. Denver's Psychology Today centerfold J.R. Smith can either be a disaster or a miracle in this series, but here he parts the seas. Denver in 7, David Stern pukes.

Did I dream that? Carmelo's request to be traded back is denied.

Denver vs. Los Angeles -- This one is as one-sided as The Falkland Islands War. The Nuggets are toast from two seven-game series and the Lakers still haven't been pushed to a sixth game. Lakers in 5.
Then the article sucks right here and is wrong :D

Did I dream that? Manu Ginobili flops so bad in Game 5 he gets a yellow card.
Funniest quote from the article.

Huh, it must have been one I missed. I never heard that he got hurt.

Edit: Almost nobody is giving us a shot. I have heard several people say things like "I'm looking forward to watching the Thunder throughout the playoffs" and such. Some people will be in for a big surprise.

The Denver Nuggets are set up to make a serious run

The Nuggets are already well-known as a hot team coming into the playoffs, but late-season results don't appear to have any extra impact on playoff performance, so they're not gaining any advantage there. The two strongest historical factors indicating playoff success do work in their favor, however, as they play at the fastest pace of any playoff team and have one of the league's better centers.

The Nuggets rank second among all playoff teams in our OP score, which means that, historically speaking, they figure to play almost two points better in the playoffs than they did in the regular season. Denver has actually played roughly equal to its regular-season level during the past seven playoffs, but with a career year from Nene they could finally buck that trend. Based off previous performance, the Nuggets have an above-average chance at making a Butler-esque run through the Western Conference playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers' recent struggles are nothing to worry about
The Lakers' five consecutive losses may have been brought on by apathy, but it was an apathy that nearly cost them the No. 2 seed. Still, even if it was caused by a random, sudden cold spell, Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and friends shouldn't worry themselves too much, as the analysis indicates that winning percentage over the season's last 10 games is not indicative of playoff success.

The Lakers may have closed at 5-5, but two of the last five NBA champions actually went 4-6 over their last 10 games: the 2006 Miami Heat and the 2010 Lakers. This season's team may have cause for concern in Andrew Bynum's injury, which could become magnified over the next two months, but they should not be disturbed by the last few games; Los Angeles has overcome worse before.

The Dallas Mavericks may have solved their playoff woes
From a first-round defeat last year to the still-shocking loss to the 8-seed Golden State Warriors in 2007, the Dirk Nowitzki-led Mavericks have a history of not living up to playoff expectations. The answer to their problems may come this year in the form of 7-foot-1 Tyson Chandler. Chandler is easily the Mavs' best center since Steve Nash ran the point in 2004 and Nowitzki himself held down the 5. In the intervening six years, Dallas' starting center has averaged 5.1 win shares per season, well below the league's playoff team average of 6.9. This year, Chandler's 9.4 puts gives the team a distinct advantage, as they head into the playoffs with the third-highest OP score. The Mavs may be a popular pick to go down in the first round, but don't be surprised if they instead make it to the conference finals -- or even further.

I doubt Mozgov was going to play much this series even if he was healthy. I think the only PT he gets is from foul trouble.

Our rotation will probably consist of:

PG Lawson/Felton
SG Afflalo/JR/Felton
SF Gallo/Chandler/JR
PF Kmart/Gallo/Harrington
C Nene/Bird

And thats a stretch. JR, Harrington, and Chandler or Gallo could see reduced minutes. If Karl does go to a shorter rotation this team will lose, we need to play to our strength which is depth. We need to be running teams into the ground at pepsi center.

No Arron Afflalo for #Nuggets in Game 1 tonight vs Thunder. Hamstring still not ready.

Ty, Felton, Nene and Mozgov are good to go in Gm 1.

Only player out, like AtwnBroncfan said earlier, is AAA.

I'm a big K-Mart fan, but he looked really slow at the end of the 1st half IMO. Getting shots blocked, not grabbing the pass quick enough..

That still doesn't excuse us from missing free throws tho.

We've been shooting well from the field, but we need to clean it up out there in the 2nd half.

04-17-2011, 09:16 PM
well i'll just say it now: if we continue to play this way in this series, we will be lucky to see 6 games.

We aren't defending the perimeter, we have guys taking jump shots who have no business doing so, and we panicked in the crunch time when we needed a 3 - taking a ridiculous shot with 15 seconds still on the clock.

Making your effin free throws & Stop playing OKCs brand of basketball. Play the type of basketball that got you an 18-7 record after the all-star break.
