Ujiri said he had spoken recently with Afflalo, "and he said, `Save a roster spot for me."

Very encouraging....

How does everyone think the west shakes up this year?

Masai is a friggin juggernaut in the front office. With the melo situation we had to deal with, we could seriously be staring down a season like the Cavaliers had last year, and instead we are in great shape to get back to the playoffs.

All we need to do is get AAA re-signed.

No. I am mad at the Nuggets until they sign AAA.

Even if he was signed, I wouldn't go. Basketball scrimmages are pretty dumb. Plus, who knows who will play and who won't. Don't think Nene will be playing yet.

I just want the season to start already even though I really can't stand the NBA (signing AAA would help me become even more excited).

Alright?

That is a great deal for us, a steal really.

He is a dynamic leader, hard to find. He is a lock down defender. He's a great perimeter shooter and he is only going to get better as he is young.

I'm very excited. Roughly a little over 8 a year isn't bad at all.

The Denver Nuggets are close to finalizing a deal to re-sign restricted free agent Arron Afflalo, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com that the sides have reached terms on a deal that, with bonuses, would pay out in excess of $43 million over five years to Afflalo, who was coveted by numerous top teams that generally presumed that the Nuggets would match any offer sheet to the 26-year-old.

The deal with Afflalo ensures that the Nuggets have retained their top two free agents. Last week, Denver and center Nene -- widely regarded as the top available free agent -- reached terms on a five-year, $67 million deal.

The Nuggets also acquired swingmen Rudy Fernandez and Corey Brewer in a trade with Dallas last week as they continue to re-shape their roster in the wake of last February's deal sending Carmelo Anthony to New York.

ESPN.com reported earlier this month that the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers were among the playoff teams trying unsuccessfully to engage the Nuggets in sign-and-trade discussions.

Rival bidders have long been pessimistic about their chances of stealing Afflalo away from the Nuggets. After restricted free agent Wilson Chandler and unrestricted free agents Kenyon Martin and J.R. Smith all bolted to China, Afflalo's future was the rare roster issue in Denver that the home team has control of.

Afflalo, Danilo Gallinari and Ty Lawson are generally regarded as the most valued players, along with Nene, in the Nuggets' post-Anthony world.

2. Denver Nuggets (43-23)

I know, I know, you think I'm insane. But before you have me committed, hear me out.

If I had to bet on a long-shot team to win the title, Denver would absolutely, positively be the one. Not only are the Nuggets better than people realize, they have more potential for in-season improvement than any other team because of all their trade assets. More importantly, the regular-season format favors them more than any other team in the league.

Remember Portland in 1999, a team with no stars that won big in the lockout season because they threw waves of depth at their weary opponents? This team is the second coming of that squad, minus the technical fouls and incarcerations. The Nuggets go 12 deep, and George Karl, more than perhaps any other coach in basketball, will absolutely use all 12. I'm convinced it's his dream to become the first coach in history to have 12 players average exactly 20.0 minutes and 8.8 points a game, and he may come close to that goal this season.

Think about this: Andre Miller, Rudy Fernandez, Corey Brewer, Al Harrington and Chris Andersen are Denver's second five. (The starters are projected to be Ty Lawson, Arron Afflalo, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov and Nene.) Behind them are two rookie first-round draft picks, Jordan Hamilton and Kenneth Faried, both of whom should contribute immediately. Somewhere in there, beginning around midseason or sooner, is Wilson Chandler too.

Throw in two other factors and I really like Denver this season. First, they're good: They went gangbusters after the Melo trade last season, going 19-6 with a scoring margin greater than 10 points a game before playing the JV in the finale against Utah. They struggled in the playoffs when they had to depend more on starters-versus-starters matchups and suffered injuries in the backcourt. They'll likely struggle in the postseason again this season unless they procure another quality big.

But in the regular season? Forget it. The second reason to expect Denver to excel is that the combination of altitude and pace is going to wreak havoc on opponents. With Lawson and Miller pushing the tempo, waves of fresh players checking in -- nearly all of whom can run -- and exhausted teams sucking wind in the Mile High altitude, I expect the Nuggets to have a ridiculous home record on the order of 28-5 or so. If they achieve that, they need to be only a 15-18 road team to fulfill my prediction. (My projection, by the way, includes a small dose of Wilson Chandler at season's end, but no Kenyon Martin or J.R. Smith.)

That prediction is based on the roster staying as is. But remember, too, the upshot of Denver's stealth robbery of the Knicks in the Carmelo Anthony trade. The Nuggets have as many trade assets as any other team in the league. They have a $12 million trade exception from the Anthony deal, lots of young, talented players that other teams want, and a $7.8 million expiring contract belonging to Miller.

If the Nuggets can swing that into another quality big man, their playoff ceiling goes much higher. Barring that, they'll have a great regular season and another early playoff exit.

But in the big picture, everybody is sleeping on this team. With overwhelming depth, two potential breakout players in Lawson and Gallinari, and tons of trade assets, the Nuggets are in fantastic shape.

Meh.

I don't see anything wrong with that. Faried is already guaranteed a roster spot pretty much. He will be getting good amount of time. ESPN picked him to be the 3rd best or 3rd most impactful rookie this year.

Karl needed to play Carroll to see if he was going to make the team, seeing as though this preseason is extremely short.

The entire 2nd half was garbage time. Why Lawson and Afflalo were still playing in the 4th is beyond me. When your up 30 in the 4th you should clear the bench. If he really isn't ready he shouldn't be dressing then.

I think when you still have a new team and trying to build some chemistry it is important, especially for someone like Afflalo.

I have no problem with Karl not playing rookies as long as we are winning.

You know, I think Rudy Fernandez will be a very good bench player for us. Faried didn't play, ehh it's not that big of a deal, he probably won't play much at all this year unless we go through injuries. Karl is just trying to build the chemistry with all the new players and see how the new players fit together. Faried will get time eventually, so will Hamilton

Mozgov will get better, he's pure raw potential right now and just needs playing time. Miller probably won't sustain his play. Fernandez is streaky, but I think as he ages he can turn into a great 6th man for us. Brewer is just a 8th or 9th guy, tall, lanky, energy player that can play some defense.

Yeah, I think the original starting 5 is pretty good. If Gallinari takes another step forward this year we'll be dangerous. If Mozgov and Fernandez both take steps forward I would have to think we'll be a contender. Really just about the whole team is young, so all of them can still take steps forward. And if Al Harrington, Chris Andersen, and Andre Miller can all stay where they at, I'd have to say it'd be hard to beat us, especially at home. It's really hard not to like the team, the only negative is that you don't have a bonafide superstar, but I think Gallinari can become that as well as Lawson.

Meh. I don't see how you could dislike Brewer and like Rudy.

Brewer is a great defensive presence, while Rudy half the game was throwin' up bricks and takin' the awful JR Smith like shots. I mean 1-7 from 3 and only 3-6 from FT. No bueno.

Brewer wasn't great either, but we are 'supposed' to be a much better defensive team, plus we have some offensive scoring power also, obviously.

I don't think he'll hold up all year. The lockout probably benefitted him, but he's old and isn't always a consistent scorer. Good guy to throw alley oops up and has a good mid range shot but at 35 going on 36 can he keep it up when it matters? Lol, yeah the Jazz are young and look like a bad team but the Mavs are the defending champs. They may be 0-2 but 3 games ago they were handing the big 3 their asses. That was an impressive win against a very solid opponent.

Portland looks good, so this should be a good test for us tomorrow. Man if we could sweep LA this weekend I would do backflips!! :D Out here in Vegas it's like 90% Lakers fans and I'd love to rub it in my friends faces!

It's because he plays for the Wizards. But him and Wall are going to be deadly in the future. That team is stacked with young talent. Once those young guy commit themselves to defense, they'll be a playoff team. McGee is a good C, Blatche is inconsistent, but he can be a monster at PF when he's on.

Oh well, we are better than this.

When you pay Nene the money he got paid, you expect him to step up. He just disappeared tonight....... Plain and simple

We have plenty of 'scorers'.

It's always how we don't have that one 'superstar'

We were just cold tonight.

Better keep that ammesty for a few years with the massive over paying of player contracts over the off season. 2-1. Good start to the season. GO Nuggs.

One good thing is that Birdman got the minutes he should. Barely any.

Havent heard that name in a while. Poor guy is paralyzed now.....

I know that sucks!

You know you are a true longtime Nuggets fan when that name rings a bell and you know who he is.

Gallo.

Thought that was pretty apparent?

He had an off night. Period.

He's not going to shoot 4/16 every night, not a chance in hell.

Broncoholic3233

I mean they completely outplayed us, in every facet of the game besides steals, and were still tied with like 2 minutes to go in the game.

I'm not worried at all. Played terribly, in one of the toughest places to play, with them being extremely hot in the 4th quarter, and still 'barely' (until we imploded in the last minute) lost.

Not really apparent at all. In big games post melo we have not had anyone player stand up and make the big time shots. We seen it against OKC in the playoffs. It looked like everyone was scared to take the big shot. Bar JR.

Uh.............

Gallo took the shot pretty much every time the ball hit his hands.

How was it not apparent? He kept shooting, he wasn't afraid.

I'd rather it be Ty Lawson. I want him to have the ball down the stretch, not only can he score but he can open up other people with his ability to penetrate

I agree to an extent.

Not sure if I want him shooting it like Gallo does, but I'd love for him to just attack at the end and try to draw the fouls. He is very tough to guard and if it looks bad, kick it out to Gallo/AAA/Rudy.

You should keep shooting if you have no one within 10 feet of you. That doesn't mean he is the go to guy.

Nuggets aernt a good 3 point shooting team. Right now that is very evident.

Gotta cut down on the posting during the Nuggets games.....guess it's a good place to vent, God knows you need to while watching an NBA game.

Not talking about this one. Just used an example to show the lack of a go to guy on the Nuggets roster from our last meaningful and last tight game. I don't think we have that guy right now .

Yeah that's what I mean. And you can't exactly give him an open 3 either because he can make those. Honestly I think Ty is the best player on the team, I'd put him up there in the league to for PGs

In the last 2-3 minutes, when Crawford kept knocking them down, Gallo took 3 of those shots.

He was obviously the guy we were 'going to'.

He's the guy we want to get going. He's supposed to be our new 'Melo'. He will be that guy. No doubt in my mind.

Not worried about that at all.

Absolutely. He's really going to break out this year.

He still doesn't see the court as well as a TOP PG should, but he's getting that. He knows that too, he acknowledge he doesn't see a lot of the things Andre Miller does.

Last year, I agree, we didn't have one.

This year, I've read multiple times, and just from the look of it tonight, they are going to make that guy Gallo. Hot or cold, they are going to try to get him hot.

Or, if AAA or Rudy or Al is hot, they'll go there, just like the Blazers leaned on Crawford tonight.
