  • ???Wedding Rings???

Being a male I am just curious as to how we got scammed into having to drop an arm and a leg for a wedding ring and the woman doesn't have to buy the man anything? I mean come on, give me a plasma TV, sports tickets, a BGS 10 Elway RC, hell anything. Now I've found out I'm gonna have to drop another load on a wedding band too. Being naive, I thought they were cheap. Heck no!!! Gotta have the one with all those dang diamonds.

Men, I am just curious how you feel about this obvious scam.

Women, I know you're gonna chime in so go ahead because I'm curious to here your side also. And please don't say that one thing you always say because once you get engaged or married you know its no longer true.

LOL. I know, we're dealing with this right now too. Personally i DO think it's unfair that men feel (or are told) they need to buy expensive rings... I mean, yes, i like rings, i like diamonds, i ain't gonna lie...but I don't want a ring that will put the guy i'm with in debt, b/c i would never enjoy that. i can't imagine taking on another financial burden in my life, and i don't want him to have to do that either. I've known too many girls who've been driving beat up old clunkers that are unsafe, while they have a ring on their finger that costs as much as a brand new car. Just makes no sense. Upgrade later if you want to, don't bankrupt yourself.

Yeah...no way around it, it sucks to be the guy in this case! I'd love to buy my boyfriend a big screen TV. He proposes and i'll do that. Oooh, maybe he'll propose before football season...

That one thing we always say? hmmm

Well, personally - here's my sitch...

I'm "promised" to my "fiance" right now...For Christmas a year and a half ago he got me the most gorgeous ring I could ever dream of - it's an emerald with a few little diamond side stones. It's set in white gold. This is my promise ring. He only spent $125 on it (of my money...LOL)

The engagement ring that I have picked out is actually 250, and the wedding band is 125, I believe... I've told him that I could live without the engagement ring, since I already have the promise ring...But he wants to get it for me.

The wedding band that we've picked out for him is $550. I will be purchasing it...

Right now, he's without a job...I'm working 3 to be able to afford all of this & our daily expenses...I keep a roof over our heads, food on the table, clothes on our backs, internet service & cable tv going, not to mention gas in the car, tickets to Broncos games, etc...

SOooooooo...all this in consideration, please tell me how me having a couple nice pieces of jewelry would be a "scam"???

Tell him that, it sure would have sped me up.

Your situation is different then most. Especially mine. I'm talking about when the GUY pays big bucks of HIS money and the woman pays oh, say NONE! That is the most common situation and the one I am talking about.

Yeah, and then what about when the girl KEEPS the ring if they split up before the wedding? My brother spent about 7 grand on a ring, which was A LOT for him, and his fiancee made TONS more than he did. She was the reason they broke up, essentially, and she kept the ring. still makes me mad she did that.

It's pretty crazy, but remember that the mark up on diamonds is huge and these guys are like car salesmen; haggle with them. They're still making a killing.

The common "practice" is to spend 2 months salary on the engagement ring. That's a lot - no matter what kind of money you're making. My wife said she didn't care so much about them being diamonds and that she'd settle for diamonique or diamonelle or whatever - just as long as it was something that she'd like. I wouldn't have it and forked over quite a bit on the 'big diamond' engagement ring, but here's where "we" saved. Instead of buying a whole new wedding ring we decided that we'd get a wrap that would accentuate the engagement ring. It worked great. She gets so many compliments on it and it looks like a whole new ring. I spent less on it since it's just a few smaller diamonds that fit nicely around the big one on the engagement ring.

For you... You don't want diamonds on your ring, do you? I didn't, but some guys do. If you do then you're looking at a lot more money. Mine's fairly simple, but still has a cool design/color with a white/yellow gold mix. Don't go crazy on your own ring, but still get something that you like.

              Just an idea....

See, that's also where I'm different - I hate diamonds...
                So everything is emerald...
I'll link to the rings that we've picked out in a bit...

Oh yeh...and Robb had bought his ex girlfriends a promise ring before too - he made them keep them when they left...One had bought him a ring as well, which he still has, and the other had bought him a nice $400 watch (which was, oh darn, destroyed in a car accident...)...

                    Okay, two things.

First, be glad all you have to do is buy a frickin' ring. It's the wife's job, and her family's, to plan and pay for the wedding. Thank God you don't have to do that, what a pain in the ass!!! I would much rather have my card swiped for a ring than have to spend hundreds of hours and even more money on the wedding!

Secondly, man made diamonds are becoming easier and easier to get, and they cost about 1/10th of what a 'natural' diamond costs. They are not cubic zirconia; they are real, live diamonds; but they are created in a laboratory by humans!!!! Sounds good to me.

Blue - your boyfriend should count his lucky stars he has you!!

I love diamonds. i don't need a big diamond, but i unfortunately have a really good eye for them - and my boyfriend knows this. i'm really into antique rings right now, and if i found the right one i wouldn't care if the diamond was as clear etc as i'd like it to be - b/c really the setting is permanent - the diamond can be swapped out later if we had money to throw around.

And yeah, the whole "father of the bride" paying for the wedding is just frightening. talk about shelling out money...

Nah - I'm lucky to have him - he puts up with all my crap...I don't know many people that would be willing to give up all that he gives up to be with me...

Now if only I could get him to get a job...*rawr* I don't mind being the breadwinner - I just would like to know that he's doing something other than "shooting bad guys on the computer" and watching tv all day... Although he does atleast do the dishes & pick up occasionally...

I think I just dislike diamonds because of it being my sister's birthstone - it's kinda a long story/inside joke - but...yeh...I just think they're way too gaudy. I also don't like huge stones, at all...Simple elegance is the way to be...The ring I have right now has a "too-big" stone on it - and it's not even a full carrat emerald...

I still gotta get the pics...hold on...
