  • Very odd facts!!

There are the same amount of dimples in an average golf ball as there are ridges in a dime

Three times as many people in America put ketchup along side their French Fries as put it on top.

84 percent of American men eat an Oreo cookie intact; 41 percent of American women pull it apart and eat the creamy middle first.

68 percent of Americans prefer their toilet tissue to unwind over the spool, not under it.

80 percent of Americans eat their corn on the cob in circles rather than from side to side.

Women aged 21 to 34 are by far the group most likely to look behind the shower curtain when using someone else's bathroom.

If all the pickles eaten each year were placed end to end they would reach the moon and back 8.25 times!

Americans drink an average of 90 million cans of beer a day.

A sneeze can travel as fast as 100 miles per hour.

About 7 percent of all working Americans have worked at McDonalds at least once in their lifetime.

When asked if they like the way they look when their naked, 68 percent of the men and 22 percent of the women answered yes.

When shampooing their hair, most people (84%) pour the shampoo into their hand first, not onto their head.

Because of the rotation of the earth, an object can be thrown farther if it is thrown west.

Most elephants weigh less than the tongue of the blue whale

A law passed in Nebraska in 1912 really set down some hard rules of the road. Drivers in the country at night were required to stop every 150 yards, send up a skyrocket, then wait eight minutes for the road to clear before proceeding cautiously, all the while blowing their horn and shooting off flares.

A giraffe can go without water longer than a camel can

According to tests made at the Institute for the Study of Animal Problems in Washington, D.C., dogs and cats, like people, are either right-handed or left-handed --- that is, they favor either their right or left paws

A person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For example, if a strong-tasting substance like salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to taste it. As soon as a drop of saliva is added and the salt is dissolved, however, a definite taste sensation results. This is true for all foods. Try it!

Experiments conducted in Germany and at the University of Southampton in England show that even mild and incidental noises cause the pupils of the eyes to dilate. It is believed that this is why surgeons, watchmakers, and others who perform delicate manual operations are so bothered by noise. The sounds cause their pupils to change focus and blur their vision

According to acupuncturists, there is a point on the head that you can press to control your appetite. It is located in the hollow just in front of the flap of the ear.

Ninety percent of all species that have become extinct have been birds.

There is approximately one chicken for every human being in the world

According to many language experts, the most difficult kind of phrase to create is a palindrome, a sentence or group of sentences that reads the same backward and forward. A few examples:

    Red rum, sir, is murder.
Ma is as selfless as I am.
    Nurse, I spy gypsies. Run!
    A man, a plan, a canal - Panama.
He lived as a devil, eh?

Lightning strikes the earth 100 times every second

The average lead pencil will draw a line 35 miles long or write approximately 50,000 English words

More than 2 billion pencils are manufactured each year in the United States. If these were laid end to end they would circle the world nine times.

A rainbow can be seen only in the morning or late afternoon. It can occur only when the sun is 40 degrees or less above the horizon.

In Calama, a town in the Atacama Desert of Chile, it has never rained.

Ants stretch when they wake up. They also appear to yawn in a very human manner before taking up the tasks of the day.

Bees have 5 eyes. There are 3 small eyes on the top of a bee's head and 2 larger ones in front.

It costs more to buy a new car today in the United States than it cost Christopher Columbus to equip and undertake three voyages to and from the New World.

One-fourth of the world's population lives on less than $200 a year. Ninety million people survive on less than $75 a year.

Butterflies taste with their hind feet.

    Only female mosquitoes bite

Mosquitoes are attracted to the color blue twice as much as to any other color.

If one places a tiny amount of liquor on a scorpion, it will instantly go mad and sting itself to death.

Every night, wasps bite into the stem of a plant, lock their mandibles (jaws) into position, stretch out at right angles to the stem, and, with legs dangling, fall asleep.

You have a hard time believing this because IT IS WRONG! Hot water is less dense than cold water and therefore the same amount of hot water weighs just a tad less than the same amount of cold water.

If you have 100mL of water at 100 degrees C than you have a mass of 95.838g since the density of water at 100 degrees C is .95838 g/mL. (Density = Mass/Volume). If you have 100mL of water at 1 degree C than you have a mass of 99.993g since the density of water at 1 degree C is .99993 g/mL.

Density of water is affected by heat due to physics. As molecules heat up, they begin to move (remember heat = energy) this is why hot water is less dense because the molecules are farther apart.

Well I guess I should add why ice takes up more space than hot water if the molecules in hot water are farther apart before some genius decides to ask. When water freezes and becomes ice, the molecules (H20) line up in a way as to keep the negatively charged oxygen a certain distance from the positively charged hydrogens. By keeping this distance ice is formed by a "lining up" of molecules that takes up more space then when water is in liquid form. This is why ice floats on water.

                    Thank you mister professor!

You are absolutely right. I was actually taking the angle that the 'same amount' of water weighs the same no matter what temperature. Density and weight aren't the same thing. In other words, if you take two equal amounts of water, heat one up and cool one down (assuming that the water is heated to sub-boiling temperatures, so none is lost to evaporation), they are still gonna weigh the same.

Conversely, if you take an exact volume of hot water, and the same exact volume of cold water, the cold water is going to 'weigh more' because there are more water molecules fitting into the same space.

Well I don't understand how amount can mean anything other than a measurement like volume. As far as the same amount of water weighing the same at any temperature I have to disagree. It seems it should but by doing the math it doesn't work out that way. You're right, density does not equal mass but it has an effect on it. Therefore, like I pointed out above 100mL of 100 degree C water DOES NOT weigh the same as 100mL of 1 degree C water.
