  • pork and sauerkraut tradition...

    anyone else follow this tradition...

    my mah is pennsylvania dutch and as far back as i can remember she has been eatin pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes on New Years Day for luck..

    anyone else follow this old tradition...

    do you have one of your own

    Happy New Years to all :salute!:

    i will be having my 2nd helping of this meal after i leave work tonight... does that make me twice as lucky this year..

    for those that dont know about the tradition of the PA Dutch

    According to a column by Craig Wilson, published in USA Today on November 4, 2003, “eating sauerkraut on New Year’s is an old Pennsylvania Dutch tradition… said to bring good luck". The traditional meal consists of pork and sauerkraut served together, with the sauerkraut representing luck and the pig representing rooting into the New Year. Its a feel good and flavoursome ritual and it may be just what you need to start the new year

    I made some pasta with garlic bread, but that pork and sauerkraut sounds pretty dam good...

        I just moved to PA this past year, and everyone is making that meal! I did eat some Kraut last night and some bacon do I get the full affect?

          Yep... I come from a long line of kraut porkers. Excellent stuff today at the inlaws so apparently the Scots like to pork krauts too...

          I see the tradition continuing in my family. I also see the leftovers in the fridge in my mouth within a minute or two... :p

            OH honey, I understand!!!

            We have to do the Kilvasa/sauerkraut/dough balls on a regular basis. Its braly growing on the kids & I am still trying to understand why one would eat this many carbs!

              im guessing that the people who started this tradition never cared about their weight

                    We have a tradition gathered from my wife's family in which we have cheesecake for breakfast on Christmas Day.

                    I couldn't hang with it this year however. I had to have some eggs before I hit the junkfood.

                      Never knew of the tradition, but my mom makes THE BEST pork and sauerkraut on planet earth. She always saves me some when she makes it, which is kinda rare these days.
