  • New York Hotels

My wife and daughters are going to New York this spring, meaning I will be broke by the time they get back.....BUT I was wondering if any of you could recommend some decent hotels, walking distance to the main sites, and reasonably priced (guessing around $250 US / night...if slightly higher, that's fine too).

    Thanks in advance!

the howard stern show put me and the wife up in the pennsylvania hotel this past summer which was right across from madison square garden. it's a very old hotel but still decent. i think it ran around 200 a night. we had a great view of the empire state building out of our window..it's not really within walking distance of times square or other attractions but nothing in the city really is...the city blocks are long but getting a taxi is relatively easy and not expensive

Yes.......something relatively close to all the famous sights......Time Square, Broadway, 5th Avenue......that is, as long as they are relatively close in proximity, as I clearly don't know the details location-wise.

And sports centers don't matter to my family.....if I was going it would matter!!!

As Apoc pointed out, nothing is really "walking" friendly. NYC is kind of big, you know. I'd look for hotels in the "midtown" area, that way your cab rides are not going to be too long. The subway is also an excellent way to get around (from N to S). It's getting across town that's a pain.

When you're there, ride the Circle Line ferry. You have different options of how long to go. We rode the one that goes halfway around Manhattan and back. It takes you right by the Statue of Liberty and you can get some good pics.

If you watch Letterman (they have that in Canada, right?), be sure to go to Rupert G's Hello Deli. We got our pics taken with him, and he was very cool about it.

How much time are you going to have to spend in the city? We took three days, and there were still plenty of things left over to see...

That's because there is nothing in upstate NY.

Thx FF.....My wife and daughters will be there for about 4 days. They want to shop, see a Broadway show, catch the famous sites, and enjoy at least one deli lunch (sounds like you have pointed out a good one!...how did you know when Letterman was going to be there?).

                  I'll pass on your ideas.

                    Thats weird.

when I was there it just seemed like endless country with some small town scattered along I-90....

                    much like western mass...

I don't know that I'd call the Hello Deli a "good one" but it's a deli. If your wife knows about Rupert G from Letterman, it's a fun stop that's close to Times Square.

Letterman was actually not filming when we were there, but you can find out when he's going to be by checking the cbs.com website (I think you have to navigate to his show specific section, but that's how we found out about it) for ticket information.

There's some sort of "city pass" ticket that you can buy that gets you into a bunch of the main tourist sites at a discount. I can't remember what it's called, though.

The view (on a clear day, of course) from the Empire State Building is great. Just be prepared for a long wait if there's a line outside the building.
