  • Swine Flu

I'm very surprised it hasn't been talked about at all on these boards.

Anyways today apparently a student here in Notre Dame has been found with the swine flu and now everyone around here is buzzing about it saying stuff from that range from, "Oh it's nothing we're going to be fine.." to, "OMFG!!!!! FLU!!!!! DONT EAT BACON!!"

And now apparently the number of people confirmed with the swine flu is rising and scary enough is the fact that since two days ago I've had a sore throat and have been coughing a lot

Yeah, I was about to look for a thread on it. And next thing I know, I see yours. Haha

But yeah, it's crazy scary stuff. I'm glad I'm not in school anymore. I don't know though, I just hope to God I don't get it. Or any of my friends/family.

For the next couple of months, any cough, or scratchy throat I get(If I get one), I will be in the doctors office faster than I don't know what.

I think you got exactly what I got

Apparently Notre Dame closed for a few hours.

One thing people should definitely not do is to go to Mexico because I guess it's a real big thing down there with all their schools closing down.

Methinks the media is turning it into something bigger then it is. Remember how SARS and the bird flu were supposed to wipe the US out? That bieng said... I will keep an eye on the kids to make sure they're strong and healthy.

So is it okay to eat bacon and hot dogs and stuff? I haven’t heard anything about whether that’s okay or not.

Yeah, it's fine to eat that. This is a flu so it spreads just like a 'human' flu.

My youngest kid has had some severe health problems so it's borderline terrifying. The good news is that most cases seem to be rather mild but there's always that chance of it mutating into something nasty.

Now it looks like deaths from the flu are likely in the US.

WASHINGTON — Federal officials warned on Tuesday that swine-flu related deaths were likely in the United States as the disease that killed scores in Mexico continued to spread across the world and governments intensified steps to battle the outbreak.

                      How is swine flu treated?
The new swine flu virus is sensitive to the antiviral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza. The CDC recommends those drugs to prevent or treat swine flu; the drugs are most effective when taken within 48 hours of the start of flu symptoms. But not everyone needs those drugs; many of the first people in the U.S. with lab-confirmed swine flu recovered without treatment. The Department of Homeland Security has released 25% of its stockpile of Tamiflu and Relenza to states. Health officials have asked people not to hoard Tamiflu or Relenza

This flu is more less the same as any other flu. The only reason it is considered to be 'deadlier' ,if you will, is because it wasn't a strain that was capable of spreading to humans until recently. This means a smaller percent of humans have a natural defense against it than the more common strains of flu.

As far as deaths go it is going to look like a lot of other diseases, the old, young, and those with immuno-deficiencys will bear the greatest death tolls. Normal, healthy individuals should have a relatively lower death rate.

Yup. The only thing to worry about is if the virus mutates as its spreading via human-to-human.

The only virus I'm really concerned about is the H5N1 strain. If that ever makes the jump we're ****ed.

Yeah, the kill rate is projected at over 70% if it becomes humanized.

Each year over 60 million Americans get the "flu".
Each year over 36 thousand Americans die from the flu.

We are at the height of the flu season now.

The students that returned to New York from a trip to Mexico just showed signs of common flu and all are recovering.

The one death in the US so far was a 23 month infant in Texas that was from Mexico City.

Authorities in Mexico have done no investigations to the folks that died there, they haven't even screened or treated their families.

This flu cannot be contracted from eating pork.

It's good to be cautious and to be prepared, but we have to be careful of premature widespread panic and hysteria fostered by the media.

                              .
