I was reading a story today about a 17 year old girl on the east coast who went missing during spring break and I got to wondering.... what's so special about her that she makes it to the national stage in the media when countless other children go missing each and everyday? Don't get me wrong... I feel all children should be protected and deserve the same attention when problems arrise, but did you notice that every so often one particular child hits national news? I'd like to think it's not about race or social status, but I'd be naive to think otherwise. When was the last time a 6 year old black male went missing and CBS or NBC jumped on it? I guess what I'm tring to figure out is how come we don't put the spotlight on ALL children when they go missing? Their parents surely love them just as much as the parents of the children who make it onto tv, right? Surely their parents went to the authorities for help, put up picutres, knocked on doors, solicited the help of friends and family and made public outcries as loud as their lungs would billow..... so how come when this child over here goes missing we don't hear about it unless we stop by Wal-Mart and see a picture or happen to catch the 4th page of the local newspaper?
I guess this is more a rant on my frustrations over the medias handling of missing children.
