      Sorry MD, they're very common, actually. Their range covers the entire continental US, plus parts of Canada. Pretty much anywhere theres a marsh or body of water, you could expect to see them. Of course, a sometimes you might actually see the "tri-colored" blackbird whose shoulders are similar but have more varied color than the red-winged ones.

      We get them eating out of our bird feeders all the time here. The females look completely different than the males. They're brown and stripey, not black at all.

        When I lived in CA, I thought someone had told me that they were native to CA. It's just odd that I never saw them until last year. That was in Dover, DE. Haven't seen one here. I'll have to look more closely.

          I've never seen a red-winged blackbird here in Utah but we used to see them all over Ohio and Kentucky.
