  • The Market

This is not an economic post of any sort.......it’s simply about the market...... a place where people come and go to do business. It is at the heart of most of the world's enterprising cultures, lifestyles and ways of doing business. It is the purest form of “buy and sell” and I love it.

When I think of the market, I am more apt to think food markets at interesting meeting places, or of the garden variety that sell flowers and shrubs and trees and all those neat horticultural goods.

There is life in the markets. People are there to purchase and to look around. The environment is healthy and full of zest. The food markets give us a chance to buy the freshest of goods, and to learn about all the produce that is available. The market gardens present seemingly endless rows of flowers and plants with all kinds of information about the name of the plant, type of environment for growing, expected size and "look" at maturity and more. It is fascinating! And it smells so fresh!!

I still remember a fantastic restaurant in Toronto that looked like a market.....you’d go from one area to another to pick the type of food you wanted, and it was in a large busy building, full of food choices and cooks who would make what you wanted, the way you wanted it. And you would be stamped at every food station, to make up your bill. Can’t remember the name, but it was such a cool place....and delicious!!

I especially love those markets located by a body of water, for some the ocean, others a lake, or even a river (like we have). There is a sense of wellness, freshness and energy and the atmosphere could not be more comfortable. And the world of free enterprise never worked so good...

I went to a market in Abu Dabi once, and spent the entire day there, the entire night, and most of the next morning as well.

It was an incredible experience. The US doesn't really have "markets" that way and it was a totally awesome cultural experience. That was the night I fell in love with that region.

In two days I take my entry test for my Master's in Education and my doctorate in Foreign Affairs - the Doctorate will focus on the Middle East.

Because of what I discovered I was passionate about when I hung out at a market one day.

We don't really have any markets around here like that. Yeah, the occasional "farmer's market", but it's not nearly the social experience you hear about from ther country/culture's markets.

In SF you can go along the warfs and get a little of the market feel, but still, it's not the same. Too much tourism and carnies trying to take advantage of another mark.

Where I'm at, we have a tues night event downtown where they shut down the street from 6pm - 10pm and have all kinds of things going on. It's as close to the market feel as I can imagine. Thousands turn out for live local bands, small car shows, food booths and just a general bringing together of the community. It's fun.... I like it.

I was a student in the Dominican Republic for 2 years, and vividly recall the markets. Every city has dozens of these, the rural farmers bring in produce year round. In Santo Domingo, they have an authentic huge one that sells chickens with or without the feathers(apparently they stay fresher with feathers). They then dip the chickens(already dead of course)into boiling water to remove the feathers. Or they just buy them live, take them home, and hack off the neck with a machete.

The SF wharfs are cool.....by the water and with all the allure that SF can bring.....

I love the last type you describe, when they close down sections of a downtown to bring people together.....
