  • Daily Commute

Good Morning Ladies and Gents (Used Loosely), oh yes and Canadians (since many of you have applied for proctection from CanDB)....

I'm up early in anticipation of the holy war today, but I wake up early everyday for work.

I was wondering what everyone's daily commute is to work one way. I drive 59 miles one way to my job as an Assistant Principal.

What is your one way commute to work?

My daily commute is somewhere in the 4-6 miles range, I'll have to admit I'm not entirely sure though.

    1. A quarter mile walk/bicycle to the nearest S-rail station (4 stations)
    2. Switch to metro (1 station)
    3. Walk across square and another two blocks

    Vice versa.

The longest commute I can recall was when I worked at LEGO. Can't beat your 59 miles, but it was probably somewhere around 40 miles one way.

Yeah, I applied for this job because my previous one was getting cut with the budget. This one opened up and I got it. I actually lose $ per se because I'm spending $100 a week commuting on gas and putting about 1200 miles a month on the car, while previously I spend $100 all month and drove a total of 200 miles a week.... Wear and tear on the vehicle??

Oh well, we have a roof over our head, food in our stomach, and the necessities needed to live. I can't complain and the commute allows me to cool off on my way home and leave work there, instead of bringing it in the door with me.

I have a Jeep Patriot, but my wife likes that for the short commute (cheaper on gas), but when it snows now I drive it. Plus it has Sirius-XM and I love to listen to Howard Stern and NFL Radio.

My regular commuter vehicle is a Nissan Ultima. It's pretty good, but I'm thinking about trading in for a Honda. In that I listen to the IPOD. I load it up and throw it on shuffle, so some mornings it may Tupac, Frank Sinatra, Dave Matthews Band, and Metallica lol... Just depends on how the shuffle is working it.

Cool I always find it interesting to hear about peoples rides ...

I love cars all types from clunkers to dream machines ... I know a guy that had a crazy long commute back in the day and he drove the wheels off an Ultima ... If I'm not mistaking that family still drives it today ...

I had a job a few years back that required me to do a lot of traveling on the east coast ... With gas prices and slow remibursment plus mileage on my only vehicle I had to find more of a local job..I drive a 95 ford ranger

I leased.then bought the first Jeep Commander that came out in 2006 and loved it, but by this time last year had put over a 100,000 miles on it and it started making some funny noises so I traded it in towards the Patriot.

Right now with a second child on the way, I'd love to trade the Patriot back in towards a Commander again because we travel with our dogs and it is just sooo roomy for everyone.

A lot of people say they have run their Ultimas upwards of almost 200,000 with regular oil changes, maintenance, and smooth commuter runs.

My commute is nice though because I'm pretty much on four lane highways for the majority of it, then two miles of city, but again four lanes. I leave at 5:30 and get there by 6:30 most days so that part isn't bad. I could not stand sitting in bumper to bumper on I-95 going to and from DC.

Well right now I'm debating possibly trading in the Patriot for this...

Just not sure... We need space and my wife's commute to daycare, work, and home each day is 30 miles round trip. Thing is built like a tank and safe.

I only live about 4 miles from work, but I have to drive around a lot for work. Most weeks I put about 500 miles on my vehicle, but the first week of the month I had a job in Stanley, Idaho which I had to travel to twice. I ended up putting about 1k miles on my vehicle that week. I need a 4 wheel drive for my job. When it snows I don't have the luxury of not going to these jobs. I also wouldn't want anything less than a large V6 to do all of this driving with. When you do a lot of driving, horse power becomes much more important.

For those of you interested, google Stanley, Idaho. Its a pretty cool place. The Sawtooth mountains are there, and so is Redfish Lake. Redfish Lake is where the Kokanee salmon call home. Its the only place they migrate to as far as I know. Its a beautiful fish.

Thanks! I'm probably going to go up tomorrow and look at it and see the options for financing, etc... I want the wife and children to be safe.

                              Living in Atlanta

Traffic is brutal. 45 miles is my commute...I live north of the city....my moring commute is fine. Takes 45 minutes in the morning because I leave between 4:45 and 5:10.

Getting home is a different animal....somewhere between an hour and 15 to 2 hours. The good news is I've learned to identify a certain spot in the drive where I forget about work so I don't bring the stress from the job home and I can concentrate on my wife and kids.
