  • Have Long, Tasty Meals Together.....

    The "fast" world is getting us quickly to nowhere. We are missing out on the true taste of good food and the company that accentuates the flavour. I even wonder sometimes if that particular food has less value within, if not eaten in an environment of friendship, thoughtfulness and even inspiration.

    Some of us grew up when "slow" food was the norm. When gathering as family and friends was an event, not something that needed to get done. When home made cooking was in vogue. When tasting quality food was a joy. When no one had a secondary or even third activity to attend to, while the meal was occuring.

    I hear that Italy is bringing back "slow" food. I like the concept. I am sure my Italian ancestors are making the most of it, with a nice wine to wash it down. And I'll bet the conversation is worth the wait. Not to mention, the powers of easy digestion will probably spark a number of books down the road, which the fast food entrepreneurs will cast aside with sarcasm and........envy.

    When my Mother passed away recently, we concluded that she was probably happiest when she served one of her wonderous feasts to her family to share, and to enjoy........together. My Mother was a wonderful cook! She made the finest fried chicken, and her stuffed ribs were amazing! But among her other specialities (which I could describe for pages!), given that she was a little Italian Mom, one did not need to eat spaghetti and meatballs anywhere else on this fine earth, and expect better. It was a recipe of many generations, but cooked with the greatest of love. And even though we had a humble lifestyle, we were spoiled that way growing up, although it is hard to know that..... if you know nothing else.

    But is was more than the taste of the food, because no matter the "what", it was the "who" that made the celebrations special. The celebration of the feast. The celebration of time together with those who matter. The celebration of providing energy to oneself, and enjoying every second of it. The celebration of making memories for the ages.

    ~~~~~~~
    I wish you well. I hope you too are enjoying "feasts" with those that matter to you. I hope you listen and laugh and offer your thoughts, ideas and humour.....even the simplest of things, that you want to share......to those who appreciate sharing. And I hope you realize the importance of "slow" food, and dedicated time with others.
    Make time.
    Taste it..........
    My wife and I recently started cooking up all our meals on Sunday. We then put them in tupperware containers and can heat up our meals each night. The meals are quick and good. It isn't fast food and we eat as a family .
        A big fat to you sir! Family meals are a dying thing, not only with fast food but with processed frozen ready to serve meals as well. My family and I eat dinner together every night as long as my schedule permits. And we cook our meal together as well. It's a great way to bond as a family after a long day. The other benefit of eating a home cooked meal together is the health benefits. It's always best not to eat too much of that processed junk, and by cooking at home you can be sure what kind of foods your kids are consuming. When we do get fast food or pizza usually once or twice a month we make that a family event as well by eating together in the family room and watching a program that we all can enjoy.
          Congrats for living it out! I believe your family will always be that much closer as a result.....and will likely share similar experiences with those they meet.
              this thread has not gotten the attention is deserves unfortunately Can, my parents made my sister and I sit at the table and eat dinner. My dads a great cook so i cant say i didnt enjoy it, but when i look back i seemed to sometimes have the TV on and be watching or listening in the background
              now that i am in college, its all about fast meals. unfortunately i miss nights sitting around a table with people talking and having a relaxing delicious meal. nowadays i sit on the couch alone most of the time (sometimes a few buddies have beer and cook good food, had fajitas a few nights ago). i love cooking and cooking for people and look forward to the day when i have a family and forcing them to sit at the table with me :haha: though not too soon
                  Great post Can. Growing up my family had dinner together every night we could. It was always nice to talk about everyones day and what night. Enjoying your meal as well as enjoying those in your life in an hour may be small but when you dont have it you realize how much you miss it. Now in college I as said before you dont really get that. Closest thing I get is on Thursdays my buddies and I have a barbeque type thing before our poker game, or group dates.
                        Then again, if the College cooks are good looking.......take some time to meet them, and perhaps it will all take care of itself!
                          This is why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! At home, I don't have a large family by any means, just me and my mom. We don't eat together all the time, never really made it a huge priority, because we spend so much time together anyways. However, the rest of the family, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandma, are all very close to us as far as distance goes. We certainly take advantage of this, and our family can often be found sitting around my aunt and uncle's table enjoying some of her chile rellano caserolle, playing yahtzee or rock band (I do not partake ) Just generally (and genuinely) enjoying ourselves. For this reason, I will always live in the great state of Colorado. Family is key to happiness.
                          The majority of times, including family friends, there are about 15 people around the table. Wouldn't have it any other way.
