  • American Akita/ English Bulldog

So me and my newly wed wife are now looking for a dog. She just had the baby, and I dont feel comfortable leaving them by themselves. I havent came down on orders, but there is no telling when i will be deployed again, or if i will at all soon, but I do a lot of field training and im usually gone for weeks at a time in the field.

I like the American Akita, and heard its a pretty good watch dog but how is a dog that size indoors? Do they tear things up like my pitbull used to do?

As far as the english bulldog, i know they are good indoors, but they are of the bulldog family which can be an aggressive breed without a dominant personality around much like how my pit used to boss my wife around when i wasnt home, she caught all kinds of problems with him. I no longer have the pitbull anymore and am looking for a new dog my family can grow with. Its between these two breeds so feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks

My neighbor had 7 Akitas for the longest time. They're beautiful dogs and are incredibly massive.

I would imagine it wouldn't tear things up as long as you're able to train it and entertain it. The only problem I could see happening is the big doggy accidently knocking down your baby.

I've always liked bulldogs but I've also heard you have to do some extra cleaning for them because if their wrinkles, especially around the anus

I have a huskey that is indoors most of the time and she isn't a problem. Only when we leave her alone with nothing to do will she start messing with the trash and stuff like that. It's pretty cool to see a big dog walking in doors. Her face is right at the table when eating but it's not a problem because she's well mannered.

My Staffy chewed up one thing in his 8 years. A video game controller when he wasn't quite a year old. He's 110 lbs, and has always been indoors. He hates being outside. Short of his tail knocking something off the table, he's great inside. No unruly shedding (an Akita is going to shed it's undercoat twice a year. By undercoat, I mean you're going to have 3 hay bales worth of fine floaty tufts of hair all over the place) not a smelly dog (Bulldogs need extra grooming/cleaning around their folds etc. or they start to reek) and he is a cuddle machine. All good qualities in an indoor dog imo.

Every dog is going to have it's quirks, but honestly, I don't know that I would go with the Akita if it's going to be indoors most of the time, like an apartment or something. They're very high energy, they're pretty big dimensionally, the shedding is gnarly, and they need a ton of stimulation especially when they're young or they will rip your house to shreds. If you went with the smaller version, like the Shiba-inu (like an Akita only more like 30 lbs or so):

That would be a more reasonable indoor dog, but then you're sacrificing some of the "scare away the creepers" factor of a bigger dog.

If the dog is going to be indoors a lot, imo, go with the Bulldog. They don't need much exercise, they're generally well tempered, and they would make a good "watch dog" since they're wary of strangers (males dogs more than females) and have a good deep "woof" that will do the job that the Shiba-inu wouldn't. Just be sure to bathe him on regular intervals to avoid odors and you'd be fine.

      Good luck

Rottweilers are a good choice as well.
