  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day - Friday, June 15th

Friday, June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This special day represents a very real problem, as many folks are abused or neglected as they reach their senior years.

Please do your part to ensure that elders are treated with love and respect. Please also make sure that signs of abuse, whether it be physical, mental, financial or otherwise, are addressed accordingly.

If you get a chance, show some love to an elder - today, tomorrow......and long after that!

    Thanks!

No just kidding. I like the old folks!

And by address it accordingly, you mean to punch those abusers in the face right

I actually work with 3 guys that are all at least over 60 & i know one is near 70 & i just love shooting the breeze with them & i personally have alot more respect for those guys than i do the younger guys i work with, & that in itself is another topic i have been wanting to bring up but i'll leave it at that for now...thread to come down the road.

Where did i get this attitude of not caring as much for people around my own age or younger as opposed to older fellows? I'm not exactly sure but i think it mostly came from my job back in the mid to late 90"s & into the early part of 2000's. There were alot of guys in the mills that were there for many years & alot older than myself so i grew to respect them & still maintain that level of respect for not only those i work with but all the elder folk.

I am definitely getting older......but not quite an "elder"

As for "accordingly".......Iets just say some deserve what you prescribe, but I think we need to say that they be turned in to the proper authorities.

Interesting viewpoint! I have a ton of respect also, as a result of my interactions with older folks. Sadly, many of my close ones are gone......but never forgotten!

Thanks for the awesome awareness post, Can! :thumb:

Not only are elderly folks incredibly talented (thanks Betty White!) but they have so many stories and memories to share that none of us younguns realize it until they're gone.

This is so true & it's one of the reasons i love to talk with the elder folks & i also feel part of me is the way i am because i spent alot of time working with alot of older guys & at the same time i feel i earned a bit of respect back from them because i listened to them & asked questions & learned so much from being around them.

Unfortunately i don't think very much of the younger generations care to pay much attention to the elderly or give them the time of day, they are too busy with other things but like you said they could learn alot by just sitting down & listening for a bit.

Thought I'd give this one a little wake up call......

I am big on the well-being of children (and support eb's efforts to keep us active in that regard).:thumb:

As I got older, I found out how hard it can be to be in the "sandwich" gen, or whatever they call it now, when you have responsibilities for your kids, who may be growing up but need lots of support, PLUS your parents, who may be getting too old to manage their lives. It can be a very tough time, especially when the needs of both are significant. I have expereienced those times, as have many people I know. It is a real eye opener, given you do not see it coming.

But as for the elderly.......it really hits home how much abuse there is going on.......and sometimes we, as family, do not realize how we become hardened (less interested) to the ways of our parents and other elderly folks. And I believe we too forget that they still need to "live", even when they become difficult to manage. And the medical process is not as good as we hope, because far too many administrators and healthcare workers loose focus I believe, as time goes on.

Please take the time to make an elderly person smile, and feel wanted. Please watch for abuse. Please try to visualize how your life may be, years from now (I believe most members here are much younger than I, and I still feel pretty young at heart), when you are limited and maybe even lost in the system. And sadly, you are neglected by those closest to you.

                            Thanks for listening!

I am now inspired to tell my grandparents that I love them... for old times sake.
