  • A soloution to camping with a fire during the fire-ban

    Well, car camping at least.

It's a hundred bucks, it runs off of propane with some fake logs in the "pit", so as long as your county allows propane stoves you're ok, and it seems to work pretty good. It's small, but gives the illusion at least of a camp fire. It has a lid that has a few buckles on it for when you store or transport it which is nice. I bought it recently when my sister came out here to Colorado for a few weeks, and she was really bummed out that the fires were going on and we couldn't have a campfire. So this became the solution. Again, definitely not as nice as a real campfire, but works as a stop gap while the bans are still active. a regular 20# LP tank lasts about 20 hours at medium.

Unfortunately, I like back-country camping and there really is no solution there, but I thought I would share this if anyone was interested

Yeah, it's probably not really worth $100 for most people, but I do a lot of camping and not having a fire has been bumming me out. It's better than nothing lol

how heavy is it? I plan on doing some camping off of my motorcycle, so weight is an issue. But that looks pretty cool.

Well, the unit itself is probably about 10-15 lbs. But you have to consider the propane too. Those little one # bottles wouldn't last very long so you would need a bigger bottle, so you have to factor that in. If you had a sidecar on your bike maybe lol I use a regular sized propane tank and it will last quite a while, but I don't think you want to strap one of those to the bike, so it may or may not be practical for that.

I only use it car camping. I've gone backpacking a few times since the ban and I've just had to deal with no fire. Started taking a little butane lantern so at least we aren't all sitting in the dark with headlamps blasting eachother in the face lol

              It's like this one:

Awesome! I've recently switched from car camping to backpacking, so we'll be using a pocket rocket.

Isn't that the little MSR stove? Or is it a lantern too? When I go backpacking I usually take alky stoves for cooking, but they aren't allowed during the ban since it's an open flame. I have an MSR whisperlite that I've been taking since the ban. It's way heavier than my alky stove set up though I should just pick up a cheapie generic butane one.

Yeah dude. if you crank the valve open it's pretty entertaining. It's loud too, like a loud whistling noise. And if you find yourself with an overabundance of propane it's a good way to get rid of it in a hurry lol

You could probably power a hot air balloon with that thing, if you had to.

That or you could just let jetrazor talk for about 30 seconds.

My wife has been trying to figure out her sewing machine. Maybe I'll get her to sew a bunch of sheets together
