  • Is "Christmas sucks" the "in" thing to say now?

I've been saying Christmas sucks for years but now it seems like every Tom, **** and Harry are singing the same tune. I kinda liked it when I was the only one that was bitter about Christmas. Now everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. I guess I'll have to find something else sacred that I can trash. Maybe Mother's day or something like that.

I'm with you. I'm not new to "Christmas sucks".

I much prefer Thanks Giving personally. The family gets together, we eat all night, we drink all night, we play games and sing and all kinds of crap.

Christmas to me means lots of work for decorations, which I'll have to put back up in three weeks. It also means bad traffic at all the stores, which I have to find time to go hit because I have to buy gifts and cards for everyone. I also suck at wrapping packages, so that's another annoyance. It also means a flood of sale ads - just like I get sick of the campaign ads during election years.

Then we have to labor together, and the kids all make a mess, and someone is inevitably too drunk to go home alone... my nephews and nieces whine if they can't watch Rudolph for the fiftieth time so I end up missing the game...

      Pffrt. What a pain.

I like Thanks Giving. Christmas is more hassle now that I'm older. I mean every kid loves it - all the presents... but even now when I still get presents... if I wanted it I'd buy it myself, and I don't need a holiday to give presents to my loved ones either. I buy gifts when I feel the urge anyway.

I'd much rather just chill out, have a great meal, drink a bit, play some games and call it a night. That's a gift right there. My family is really close - in fact I spend more time with them than I do friends, and my best friends (and those I socialize with most often even given other options) are my cousins and aunts and mom and so forth.

That'd be all the present I need. Warm food, good company, and a game to play while we drink.

Christmas is just more hassle now than it is reward in my opinion.

Ha. Do you guys want to get me started about what our society has done to Christmas? I love Christmas, but I hate what it has turned into.

Sure, get into it. Get it out of your system now so you can handle it for the next month.

          Vent, vent.

A friend of mine is refusing to go to any parties that are called "Holiday" instead of "Christmas".

No, the materialisticness (my word) has completely and utterly ruined what Christmas is about. But it does not make me love and enjoy Christmas any less. It just gets frustrating to see what it has come to.

What bothers the heck out of me is society taking away the term Christmas. Winter Break. Holiday Specials. That is such bs. It is a Christian holiday. To take away from it is crap. To avoid the word "Christmas" to be politically correct is poopoo.

It does seem the majority feel this way - which leads me to wonder why we dont change things - if a majority of the people think its over commercialized and too much about buying things - why dont we just stop -

Maybe we should put it to a vote in the next National Election

                Should we de-commercialize Christmas?

The Christmas tree is a Pagan symbol. I believe the Jews have Chanukah. In fact there are several religions that have holidays about this time of year.

Not to mention that those that aren't Christian still celebrate their loved ones and exchange gifts on the day.

Just as I felt the Christmas tree had taken on a secular meaning in our society (which I mentioned in another thread), I feel similarly (although less so) about Christmas in general. If you want it to be a religious holiday, more power to you. But it's NOT just a religious holiday, nor is it an exclusively Christian day.

To refer to it as only a Christian day in my mind, minimizes the true meaning of Christmas - coming together with your fellow man. Maybe that's just me though. I'm weird like that some times.

                    That's really not possible.
There's too much money involved in this holiday, and there are just too many people who don't care about christmas is suppose to mean, it really has become just about giving presents for a lot of people.

For god sakes, I have an indian friend, and he practices the hindu religion, but they still put up a christmas tree and get presents for each other, simply as a reason to give presents to one another.

I guess the term Happy Holidays is used because really, we live in a very ethnically diversified country, and when you tell someone merry christmas, you're not necessarily insulting them, but your wishing them a good christmas when they could care less....esp. where i live, there are many jewish people, and then you got the people celebrating kwanzaa as well.
