I can vouch for the extreme cold stuff.....when you've experienced a windchill in the -50C range (close to -60F), you soon realize that your skin can not be exposed to the elements for more than seconds without freezing. Think of the consequences of being alone for a short period of time, and something happens to you.
Extreme heat on the other hand, is another scary situation. Without proper fluids, serious things can happen. Imagine Death Valley in peak heat season.
So......if you had shelter and the abilty to keep warm/cool for either scenario, but had to face extreme conditions for a about a month, which side of the spectrum would be worse?
I lean towards extreme heat, because you can in fact dress for extreme cold. (GEEZ....it's winter 101 for most Canadians eh?) BUT....I am "just" leaning that way. What say you?
