U.N. worker caught in DR Congo sex scandal

Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A French United Nations aid worker in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been arrested for manufacturing pornographic videotapes of young girls.

The unidentified logistics expert worked at Goma airport near the country's east border as part of the U.N.'s $700 million-a-year effort to rebuild the war-shattered country, the Times of London reported.

Acting on a tip, police set up a sting operation using a 12-year-old girl as bait. When they raided his home, they discovered he had turned his bedroom into a studio for videotaping and photographing sex sessions with young girls.

The bed was surrounded by large mirrors on three sides with a camera operated by remote control on the remaining side, a senior Congolese police officer said.

Officers also seized three homemade porn videos and more than 50 photographs.

U.N. insiders told the newspaper a Ukrainian and a Canadian had to leave their U.N. posts and the country after getting local women pregnant.

The case has highlighted the apparently rampant sexual exploitation of Congolese girls and women by the UN’s 11,000 peacekeepers and 1,000 civilians at a time when the UN is facing many problems.
And this is who the US should stay involved with? This could be the UN's Abu Ghraib.

Zaire ( The Congo ) is a sad place. Millions and millions of people have been slaughtered there in the last decade alone.

My adopted brother, Felix, grew up in Kinshasha. An undergraduate, teaching at a Catholic University while he worked on his Doctorate, Felix began to work for the Government. A young man, working hard, proud of his wife and 2 young daughters. Then the rebels took over. They demanded Felix work for them, as they massacred literally MILLIONS of people. Sending his family to live with his mother, Felix was sent to a neighboring country. His refusal to cover up the carnage and assist the new President by lying to the world, marked him for death. Felix fled to Paris. From Paris, on his way to Canada and cousins.

Felix worked at a cannery in Canada, saving to send for his beloved wife, Francine, and their 2 daughters. Long story short, lousy lawyer, he was denied political asylum in Canada, who will not deport a person to their own country if they will be killed there.Felix was deported to Montana. From there to INS lockup in Denver. Fluent in French, Spanish, Swahili and other languages, felix spoke no english. Felix called every catholic Church in Denver, no reply. Last chance, Felix dialed the number of St Francis, Denver's Polish National Catholic Church. My father, the priest of St. Francis, answered the phone. Fr. Gus, fluent in English, Latin, and Greek, had a vague grasp of French. Contacting Felix' cousins in Canada, Fr. Gus raised the dough and posted bail. Felix came to live at my parents house. Roman Catholics have never helped him. He met with the Arch Bishop, vague talk of maybe. He met with dianna DeGette the congresswoman, she promised him help, then never returned his calls again.

Meanwhile, in Kinshasha, 2 school chums of Felix were being hunted by the new government, vague charges of a plot were bandied about. The 2 were hiding in Felix' mom's house. Francine was away visiting her parents this day. The troops drug the 2 chums out into the street. they both got abullet in the forehead on the spot. Mom cried out, seeing these two young men murdered in front of her, boys she had helped raise from pups, and for her emotion, the bastards delivered a bullet to her cranium, also! Felix' 2 young daughters began to cry and wail, seeing their Grandmother and "Uncles" brutalized.
"Shut those brats up!" The troops yelled, according to neighbors.
The girls could not contain themselves. As the troops left the scene, blood flowed from 5 innocent bodies, the 2 youngest having got the same treatment as their elders. But for the grace of God, Francine would have shared their horrific fate. It was the late 1990's, I would not venture to ask my brother the exact year, what difference '96, '97, or '98?

"How do you deal with this?" I asked Felix?

"Ahh, David" he told me " There are others who have it much worse than I."

It took us 4 years, with threats of deportation by the INS and such, to get Felix permanent legal status. Fr. Gus and Felix, a small parish priest and an immigrant, they took on the INS together, and won! I taught him to drive, helped him with his English as he helped my French. Dude works 2 jobs, has worked 3 before. It took us 3 years to get Francine here. Legally. 3 years of bouncing around Africa, finally getting a visa out of South Africa. They bought their first house last year, she works 2 jobs,too. They are the epitome of the American dream! I am proud they are my family!

They love America more than most. So much more I could write here.

The Congo is a sad place.

Your article mentions one person being involved in the making of these tapes....why do you insist that all 11,000 are guilty.

Also, don't compare this to Abu Ghraib until you find out that orders were passed along from higher-ups to make these tapes...because that's what happened in Abu Ghraib....it wasn't just one bad apple, like it seems to be in this situation.

Do not alot of people(left) believe that this is rampant? They don't hold accountable most of the military for a few gi's?
