Does starting from scratch mean that you have low self-esteem?

It takes courage to acknowledge failings, take what you've learned and apply it to start anew/ try again. Some of the world's most successful people have done this, so on balance i don't think this reflects low self-esteem. So my question would be, is there such a thing as completely starting from scratch?
