I would be in the treasure category. I paid my way through college as a survey party chief and plumb bobs were/are an essential field tool, Most are made of brass. They have a little weight to them so they can drop quickly and pointed so they stick in the ground where you drop them-- to set a point in the field. They can also be used to set the level rod on to 'turn an elevation'. A plumb bob was used by early surveyors to set out the public lands system. Almost every survey monument found at a section corner (square mile) was set by one of these.

But, no way would I pay $17k.

What is the current market value of a plumb Bob from...1875 worth? How does one age a plumb Bob? How does one verify the age of a plumb Bob? Are there plumb bob experts who can verify age and value?
