Veterans groups are asking the public to help honor the life of a late veteran who will be buried alone on Wednesday in Phoenix, Arizona.

Air Force veteran Will Melvin Shegog passed away Feb. 15 and has been declared an “unclaimed veteran” ahead of his funeral service with full military honors this week, according to Dignity Memorial, who is sponsoring the service.

Service for Shegog will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27.

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — Next week, the mortal remains of 17 Amarillo-area veterans will be escorted to San Antonio to be laid to rest in the national cemetery at Fort Sam Houston.

Before that can happen, residents in Amarillo and across the Panhandle are being asked to help with donations toward 17 urns for these patriots who were left unclaimed by friends and loved ones.


Unclaimed Veterans – a group dedicated to rendering proper honors to service members who have died and been left in the county’s care – needs roughly $2,000 to purchase 17 urns.

The funds are needed before Wednesday, April 3, when, after a ceremony at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial, these patriots will be escorted to the national cemetery to rest where valor sleeps. This is the third year for this ceremony.

The community is invited to participate in the April 3 events with the ceremony starting at 5 p.m. A Huey helicopter flyover is set for 5:15, Patriot Guard rider Michael Decker said. Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner will offer remarks at the ceremony.

The urns and their accompanying flags will be held at A to D Mortuary with veterans standing guard through the night.

“They are never left alone,” Decker said of the patriots’ mortal remains. “We stand through the night, changing out guards every two hours.”

Patriot Guard Riders and area law enforcers will escort the 17 urns in a caravan, with kickstands up at 8 a.m. Thursday, April 4. Riders will gather at 7 a.m. April 4.

“All of the Amarillo motorcycle officers will lead us out of town,” Decker, one of the event organizers said.

He said the caravan would be led by Department of Public Safety troopers all the way, with local law enforcement units dropping off and joining in at jurisdictional lines.

“When we get to Sweetwater and Abilene, our numbers really get bigger,” Decker said. “Last year, by the time we rolled into San Antonio we had 400 to 500 motorcyclists, and 30 to 40 passenger vehicles.

The rendering of final honors is planned for Friday, April 5, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

“Along the way, when we stop for gas or whatever, people come up to the coach and want to see the urns,” Joel Carver with A to D Mortuary said of the 2018 caravan. “We had native American chiefs come up to say prayers over the urns. Fathers with small children came up to kneel and pray.

“It was all very humbling,” Carver said.

He was a little boy with big dreams of serving our country.

5-year-old River “Oakley” Nimmo wanted to be an “army man.”

But that dream was cut short.

The young boy died on June 20th, after a long battle with neuroblastoma cancer.

He was first diagnosed at two-years-old.

He was declared cancer-free in June of 2017 but the disease came back the next month.

In honor of his passion for the United States Military.

The Arkansas National Guard attended Nimmo’s funeral and posthumously made him an honorary colonel, assigned to the joint force headquarters at Camp Joseph T. Robinson with the duty title “army man”.
