I think there's two sides to this....some media is definitely misleading, but I expect folks to do some critical thinking, and use sound judgement with the numbers and so on. I think the emphasis is on us to differentiate good and bad sources. Trend analysis is important. Understanding goings in communities, including back to school, holiday celebrations, lowering of guards thinking it will just go away, and so on.

Not you, but some folks are transfixed on certain sources, and believe every word they say. Fact check time. And motives of sources needs to be understood.

I think satire news is preferential to actual "journalism." At least it doesn't pretend to inform.
      To infinity...and beyond.

Hahahah don't get me started on this and my hatred for the media. In Australia when we got on top of it initially, the news headline one morning was exactly this. "Covid-19 cases have doubled overnight". The cases genuinely went from 1, to 2, no word of a lie, and they ran that headline as the top story on the news.

Haha. Because that’s exactly what happens... and ya. I remember sitting with mom and dad watching real news... now I never watch it...

I get the need to know who is making the stories, and what their motives. Maybe I am naive, but there are plenty of reliable, objective sources. And I think it incumbent to not only find out who they are, but be open minded enough to accept other views than the ones your side believes (if you have a side) going in to the discussion.

Sure, journalism has its flaws in terms of credibility, but unfortunately many people only hear what they want to hear.

            Further to....

No matter how "sensational" the reporting, pertaining to this pandemic from the get go, here we are:

            - About 1 million dead and rising rapidly
            - Economies in recession and at times close to the D word
            - Unimaginable numbers of normally good businesses on the brink
            - A stock market that greatly over values the reality
            - Our whole way of life changed and for who knows how long
            - Education has become a difficult process
            - No vaccine
            - No treatment
            - Still not able to fully understand the virus and its characteristics

Did all media get this right? No. But some sure did. It was not all sensationalism. It was sometimes about handing us the info, and hoping we would do our part.

            • Media is all about getting the clicks or tuning in... it not about truth or fact in any way shape or form anymore...

The media used to report... now they try and control the narrative... and that dangerous...too many stupid people who believe anything they hear in the media and act accordingly.

On,a side note... Florida went full to hell with Corona. Opened everything, banned no mask fines... and that with a reported 100 deaths a day.... will be interesting to watch..

                  Is that a fact?

BTW....if they have a choice between important stories and non important ones, I think the clicks factor is valid.

Maybe some folks don't like stories because they differ from what they choose to believe. There are plenty of good journalists around.

                  • Journalist... love how wiki opens up their page abou them...especially the last line...

A journalist is a person who works in journalism to report the news. They may work on their own ("freelance") or for a newspaper, a radio or television programme. There are different kinds of journalists.

A reporter is a type of journalist who researches, writes, and reports information. Newspaper reporters write news articles and stories for newspapers. They write these articles and stories by interviewing people, asking questions, and doing research.

Reporters must tell the truth in their reports. Telling the truth is a very important part of all journalism jobs. Those who do not tell the truth may be punished like other workers who do not do their work. They can be suspended (do not work for a short time) or fired (losing their jobs).

However, frequently news reporting does show bias instead of objectivity.

And that’s the state of the news today.....

I learned after 9-11 to not watch the news. New York was under Code Red for what, 5 years in a row.

I do watch the news here and there, but once I turn it on, I scan. digest and turn it off.

                          • I find that it is very convenient nowadays for people to call anything fake news just because they don't like it.

Back to the covid situation.....the only hoax involved was the part about not taking it seriously.

Sorry, we were "back to the covid situation" if you didn't catch that.
