Just wanted to thank who ever it was that mentioned Gerry Rafferty and Baker Street yesterday. Haven't been able to get the damn song out of my head since. Still humming it at bedtime last night, and woke up with it in my head this morning.

As for Baker Street, it had been sort back in my head for a while.

I was working at a classic rock station before I moved here, so when you play the same 1,000 songs, you get a feel for what sonsg are the ones that you will never tire of. This totally MY list, so if you think I am wrong, cool. That's what a good music thread is about.

Assuming there are chat rooms for musical performers, is there any similarities on those boards to what you see on this board or any NFL team's board?

I mean, would an Aerosmith fan be considered a troll on a KISS message board and would the interactions be similar. I'm no music expert, so I could be comparing apples and oranges, so forgive me. But I think you get my point.

But would there be a list of the 50 greatest bass players, and then have arguments? Could someone say something derogatory about Peter Simmons (I think he's with KISS) on a KISS board and get smacked around like one would get in here for saying something derogatory about a Bronco player?

Or do country fans trash talk rock'n roll or classical music boards? I've never heard Bach, Beethoven or Mozart say "Show Me the Money" but they're all dead anyway.

I never really liked the Baker Street song, its alright though.

Pantera's Cowboys from Hell (I think) gets stuck in my head if I listen to it.

Those are some good tunes Jared. I agree any pre 85 AC/DC and pretty much any Led Zep is good to me. Any V/H with David Lee Roth is great as well as early Def Lep. And of course the all time legend Lemmy and Motorhead!!
While I tend to lean toward mostly Metal stuff....some other good classic rock I think is Boston, Kansas, .38 Special, Triumph, New York Dolls, Ramones.........

And wow, Welcome to the Jungle is classic rock, now I am getting old.

It's Gene Simmons, and as a KISS die hard, even we slag him. Not exactly a groundbreaking guy!


A lot of individual bands do have websites and message boards where theydo have discussions about music. I don't know of any general music board. But yes, if you were to go to a board of a specific band just to slag on them, I would imagine that you would be considered a troll. In a way, that is wierder though, because musical artists may come from a specific city, but I don't think that it is the same, since it isn't the NYC KISS, and the Toronto Rush, etc. As being discussed on another thread, with a lot of fans, they see their team as a representation of their city/state/etc. That is usually not the case with a band or artist. So going out of your way to rip some band you don't like is ridiculous, unless you are like 13 and your fave boy band has a rival boy band. I mean, KISS and Aerosmith toured together, even though in 1970's, they were sort of "rival" American rock bands. Its just different. Plus, the music industry is much more fractured. Your average football game gets a double digit rating, which means that some 10-20 million households are tuned in to watch a game, where as 1 million albums sold is a heck of an accomplishment. Think about that. 1 million is less than 1/10 of 1% of the US population. So when Shania Twain sells 14 million, that is still about 5% of the population, which means that there are a heck of alot more people who don't like Shania than who do.

As for fans of genres disliking other genres, yes that happens. It is very subjective. My wife, for instance, is a classically trained pianist and vocalist (and a doctor....have I mentioned that she is the most amazing woman in the world?) who also has a penchant for new rock styles (punk, ska, mainstream modern rock). Yet she doesn't like classic rock. Well, ok, maybe some AC/DC, but that's it. She doesn't like anythig else I do. And she lets me know it. My country callers always think they are being sympathetic when they tell me that it must have sucked to work at classic rock station. That was my favorite job ever. They just clearly don't like rock. I think my tastes are broader than most, so most peopel stick with one or two generes. I am all over the map. So that inter-genre hatred does exist. It is just not as common, because of the fractured nature of the music industry.

So I can say I like the group "Kansas" without fear of massive retribution?

I always found it interesting that the lead singer for Kansas (Steve Walsh, I think) was from St. Joseph, Missouri. Not sure where the rest are from.

It was strange ... when I lived in St. Joseph in the mid 1980s, the town had basically disowned him for reasons I'm not quite certain of and never did get a good answer.

Hey ReasonableChief last night Proto-Kaw played at the Beaumont Club in KC....they were the band that forned Kansas. So at least these guys are still playing. I thought Kansas was a great band. I would have liked to see this show.

In the early 70's, the band Kansas went through three large transformations. The sound of the band changed along with the the group members. The band the world came to know as Kansas was actually the third version of the band. Proto Kaw is the renamed, reformed second version.

Alas, the Beatles and CCR are now played on Oldies stations too. As stations keep trying to aim for the same age demographic, the music they listen too changes. Not every station plays GNR or Living Color, although both are around 15 years old, just like not all oldies stations play the Beatles and CCR. It all depends on where you are. In 10 years, I am pretty sure that I will be listening to some mix of oldies and classic rock, as opposed to new rock, classic rock, and CHR/Top 40.

My dad considers classic rock to be the Animals, the Zombies, Chuck Berry, et al....its all matter of perspective.
