Being an engineer I am intrigued by NASA and some of the stuff they do. What do you guys think about this new plan Bush has for them and the budget increase of over 1 billion.

Its about time we paid attention to our long negelected space exploration prgram.

regardless of politics, I think our governing bodies waste too much money on dumb stuff.

    This is not dumb stuff.

I agree. I think we neglected it for far to long. Bush has done some things to piss me off, but this makes up for several of them.

really? its interesting to hear people talk so highly of nasa. most people i know consider it a waste of tax money. i'm haven't decided myself, i mean, i don't care about sending someone to mars and i won't lose sleep at night if china beats us to it, but the technology that comes out of it for other things goes a long way to justify it i guess.

oh here's a funny picture of some nasa satelite thing. i guess it's nasa. i think somebody lost a job.

on the picture they were testing to see how that device operated at different angles, they just forgot to secure it to the platform. And yes somebody lost their job. And no it wasn't me. I have a friend who was working on that project, and no it wasn't him either.

i used to do construction work during the summers and those sorts of mishaps happened all the time. one time a guy knocked a hole in someone's roof trying to lift a palet of spanish tile up on it. the crane he was using wasn't balanced and fell over. i've got a feeling that satelite cost a bit more than the roof though. it's funny to see how that kind of stuff happens in all sorts of professions.

This is an area I dont have enough real knowledge about to make an informed opinion on whether its a waste of $$ or not.

I tend to lean towards it is, only because I really dont know what the real benefits are from us doing all of this space exploration, etc. Is there enough benefit to justify that amount of money??? Does it create jobs for people, namely Americans? Does the information we gather have a large impact on our daily life?

I mean there are a thousand legit questions I dont know the answer to......So inform us, oh wise great engineers (just kidding, I have met mostly pompous ones), why is this a good thing?

I did construction work for a summer as well, pretty cool job.

OSHA came and did a suprise inspection on us one day. Fortunately they left after lunch. If they had waited longer we would have been screwed.

We were finishing the framing on this three story house and it was end of the day so we were cleaning up. We were carrying stuff down the ladders and such when an unforunate incident occured. Our boss and his son were heading down the ladder, when the son's nail gun somehow discharged. Nobody knew where the nail went and nobody thought they got hit so it wasn't a big deal. Well we finished cleaning up and were talking about what we would do the next day, when our boss tried to remove his helmet. He couldn't because a 16 penny nail, from the nail gun, had entered his skull. Fortunately he was wearing a helmet, and the nail head stopped at the helmet. To say the least it was interesting. The guy didn't suffer any brain damage, and never felt anything. Pretty weird.

The NASA program has invented thousands of devices which we now consider basic.

Have any cordless tools? Black and Decker made its money because NASA decided to give that company its designs for cordless tools so they could make it for NASA.

Have any smoke detectors? NASA developed those for the SKYLAB, first American space station, through Honeywell.

Do you like your clean water? NASA developed a system that uses H2OME, a molecule, which cleans the water and is used in private homes, towns, and large cities to purify water.

A new type of insulation has come out, a local Oklahoma company called Smart House Consultants sells it, that guarantees you will only use so many kilo-watt hours per year for energy. It uses technology from the Apollo heat shield program to provide better insulation.

Do you like to watch all of those Denver Bronco games? They are broadcasted on satellites, developed initially by NASA, to provide clear quality of events that are thousands of miles from your location.

And the helmet padding that protects our favorite players from having their brains scrambled was developed by NASA.

These are only a few, but NASA and other space programs around the world continue to develop new technology which we use in every day life. In order to live in space inventions are needed, and those inventions soon find their place in the commerical business and our lives.

Sorry if I sound a bit snoodish, I'm just an engineer and I can't help it when I talk about stuff like this. It excites me. Remember the thread earlier about the power from a engine on a dragster (NASCAR being a sport or not)? If not, see my comment towards the end that had everyone laughing.

yeah it was. It still makes me cringe to think about it.

The guy was at work the next day, his son wasn't however.

I bumped the NASCAR thread, but I reread it and noticed that you were the thread starter so I'm sure you knew what I was talking about.
