  • What the heck happened??

    Tax his land,
    Tax his bed,
    Tax the table
    At which he's fed.

    Tax his tractor,
    Tax his mule,
    Teach him taxes
    are the rule

    Tax his cow,
    Tax his goat,
    Tax his pants,
    Tax his coat.

    Tax his ties,
    Tax his shirt,
    Tax his work,
    Tax his dirt.

    Tax his tobacco,
    Tax his drink,
    Tax him if he
    Tries to think.

    Tax his cigars,
    Tax his beers,
    If he cries, then
    Tax his tears.

    Tax his car,
    Tax his gas,
    Find other ways
    To tax his ass

    Tax all he has
    then let him know
    that you won't be done
    till he has no dough.

    When he screams and hollers,
    Then tax him some more,
    Tax him till
    he's good and sore.

    Then tax his coffin,
    Tax his grave,
    Tax the sod in
    Which he's laid.

    Put these words
    upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom..."

    When he's gone,
    Do not relax,
    Its time to apply
    The inheritance tax.

    Accounts Receivable Tax
    Building Permit Tax
    CDL licenseTax
    Cigarette Tax
    Corporate Income Tax
    Dog License Tax
    Federal Income Tax

    Inheritance Tax
    Interest Expense Inventory tax

    Liquor Tax
    Luxury Taxes
    Marriage License Tax
    Medicare Tax
    Property Tax
    Real Estate Tax
    Service charge taxes
    Social Security Tax
    Road usage taxes
    Sales Tax
    Recreational Vehicle Tax
    School Tax
    State Income Tax
    State Unemployment Tax (SUTA)
    Telephone federal excise tax

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was the most
prosperous in the world, had absolutely no national debt, had the largest
middle class in the world and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

    What the heck happened????

There's one for you, nineteen for me
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet

          Taxman!
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

Don't ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr. Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more (Aahh Mr. Heath)
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

And you're working for no one but me

Ack. If I am to answer this question, it could get political.

Ok. Well, they didn't have interstates back then and the cost of living is higher and people mostly live in the cities where they used to be mostly rural.

But we fund many endeavors quite a bit more than we used to.

That and having a bunch of different taxes with different names doesn't necessarily show the differences between taxes back then and now. It shows more specialized taxes which may show an attempt at more targeted taxation. Perhaps many of these are aimed more at businesses where as back then, a lot of big business was essentially huge companies that weren't taxed so much and were creating huge monopolies.

Either way, I think that we'd all like to get taxed less, but we all also some of the expenses of our government are well worth the cost as scientific and technological and social endeavors have helped improve our country.

Other endeavors like international participation after we stopped with the Monroe doctorine also have an effect.

If I knew about tax law maybe I could be a bit more specific, but I don't and that's ok because any specific answer would probably be pretty political.

Eh, I definately want to pay less taxes, but I don't mind them as long as they go to something constructive.

Constructive: light rail system in Denver

Not constructive: giving a 16 year old girl who is pregnant with her 2nd child an apartment, car, and free college simply because she screwed up.

They can call it a "free country", but when you look at how much we are taxed, are we really all that free...?

And to think, a 5% tax caused an uprising where the local folks burned ships in Boston harbor. Now, we are taxed at 10x that rate, and we sleep right through it

I was going to rip that apart, but I decided otherwise. Check out the Fair Tax. It's been proposed to Congress and would do wonders for this country.

100 years ago---we didn't take war overseas, but just protected the mainland.

100 years ago---we didn't have welfare, medicaid, medicare, or social security.

100 years ago---we didn't have paved roads, hi-ways, or interstate systems.

100 years ago---we didn't have only rich politicians running and winning office.

100 years ago---we didn't have robust military branches as we do today.

I had to think about your question here a bit. We are definitely taxed-to-death. However, I agree with everything above, except for welfare, and believe the above gave us the status of "super power" in the world.

I don't like excessive taxes, but I don't like the idea of not being on top in the world either. Overall, I really like this country and how it functions. Maybe people of less good fortune from other countries would think complaining about paying taxes seems a bit "spoiled" on our part, perhaps.

I think Mom can still stay home to raise the kids, as long as she and her husband are living within their means. Sacraficing material goods for the better good of being with your children.

My biggest issue really is Imminent Domain. I think you buy land, it should be yours for life or until you, as the owner, decides to sell it. To me, that is trully stealing from the American people.

                        Good thread Topscribe!
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

John Stuart Mill (Look him up )

Fair tax, flat tax, sales tax...

Like other tax reform ideas, there is no guarantee that the definition of "Fair" can't be raised by politicians eager to please their special interest groups. Much like the current system, with no rock solid limit on how much Washington can pilfer from our pockets, the end result is the same, we get fleeced.
