  • Here Wolfie Wolfie Wolfie

    The past three weekends, (exluding this last one)
    I've been volunteering at the Shy Wolf Sanctuary, a home for abandoned and abused animals. There are wolves, wolf dogs, there is a Jaguar/Leopard (someone's experiment )
    There are foxes, coyotes, praire dogs, etc.
    On October 14 I went there with my college sister and my mom took some pics. It really added to my Birthday, but it is very tiring.
    Just wanted to share the awesomeness of hugging wolves on your B-Day

    First up is Tian, and his brother Chokowah. They are both pure wolves, and spell a whole lot of trouble. I've heard of people's experiences when cleaning this exhibit alone. These guys are thieves of buckets, hoses, wheelbarrow handles, rakes, the works. Naughty naughty!
    Along with Tian and Chokowah, Julie, Indy, and Wachee live in there. Wachee is the only wolf-dog in there, but he is the alpha. So apparently wolves aren't racist, eh?

    Julie was abused as a pup by a male trainer at a show on animal planet. She wouldn't do what they wanted so he beat her. She's terrified of males and will attack them if they enter this enclosure. She paces when there are a lot of people, and it isn't a walk, she runs when she paces.

    Indy is the sister of Tian and Chokowah, she is a dark beautiful wolf. I feel that Julie probably rubs off on her. My hope is that I can pet Indy some day, she's so shy! But she is one of the prettiest.

    Tian gets to leave the enclosure every now and then, and Wachee, the alpha, always puts him in his place when he comes back in. Wachee is an oldie, but a sweetie.

    Tian is one of my favs. He's a brat puppy, but he's big enough to knock you over, just like any wolf in there. He's naughty and you can tell he and Chokowah are brothers by the way they wrestle in the dirt.
    Chokowah is so funny. I remember his name by his chocolate brown nose. And I remember that nose by it always being in my face, his tongue licking my chin raw!

    Here's me nose-camming Tian and Chokowah standing behind him
    And here's Chokowah giving a kiss
    ~~~~~~~~
    My next favorite enclosure has to be the threesome of Teyah, Kamots, and Loki.
    Loki is a tiny boy, and shy too. He always tries to give my mom a lick on the head whenever she goes in. He is funny and pretty. His eyes have a cool streak going along them which make him all the more distinct.
    Teyah is the mom of Kamots, she's always trying to get out of the enclosure when you open the door. She is pure white and very sweet. I always say she's probably building an escape tunnel to get out. She loves going out of the enclosure. When we found a huge pit in the back I laughed, I was right.
    Here's Teyah, cleaning my sister
    Kamots is the main attraction for me. He is a giant. And standing next to Loki he's even bigger. His paws are huge!!! When he's in the mood he'll rub all over your back, he's very strong too and could knock you over easily. He's very sweet as well, except last time he nipped me because I was sitting in his hole!
    Here's my sis petting him
    ~~~~~~~~~~~

    Two part time visitors to the Sanctuary are Spirit and Samson. Spirit is the perfect name for this white alaskan tundra wolfe she never stops bouncing! Last time I went she tugged on my pony-tail and drug me to the ground!
    Samson is her brother and is much calmer, though still a bit of a handful. They are so pretty, their fur is long and soft, Samson's coloring is awesome and Spirit looks so stylish when you put the pink stuff called 'swat' on her ears to keep the flys off.

    These two will be leaving to visit live with their owner soon, who had them without a license or a proper enclosure. He is building one and getting a license for them. I'm not at all worried about these two, the guy seems to love them greatly, they'll be in good hands.

    In this picture, Spirit and Samson are on top of their doghouse, my sister (on the right) is being pushed around by Samson who is being pushed by Spirit, but I'm trying to hold Spirit still for the picture. It truly captures the chaos of these two siblings
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Those are the three wolf enclosure's I've visited the most. I've visited with Moondance, a three legged panther (though didn't go in the exhibit I did stroke her, you know, those testy cats)
    She gets around so well
    The most beautiful cat, Bengo, is also the friendliest and possibly the softest thing I've ever felt. He is a jaguar/leopard which was some idiot's experiment.
    He runs around and teases you trying to get pet, but when you're cleaning his cage and he is in lockout he lays down in the seperate cage and allows you to scratch his back.
    So Soft!
      That's very cool! Its such a pity to see people abuse such beautiful animals
      Do they run summer camps or something like that? What state is it in? It would be awsome to get my kids involved in that
      Rest in Peace, Darrent and Damien. You will be forever in our thoughts
        Hi T140! I'm so glad you posted this Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!
        Your stories about each animal, along with their pictures, is truly inspiring!
        Beautiful animals, just beautiful. I'm thankful they were rescued and now
        can be loved, fed and respected. This is an awesome thread and thank you for
        sharing your stories and photos. Great experience for you!
        Hard to understand how ruthless some people can be with animals though.
          It's in Florida, I've heard of some all over the state, but I'm not sure if its in any others.
          I'm sure there are other kinds of animal programs in Colorado and other states though like this. Or at least I would hope so
          And HW, it is actually a very fun experience and sad at the same time. There are some old wolves at the front that we're not allowed to go in because they're a bunch of grumps. I don't blame them though, they were left alone for a few months w/o food in a concrete enclosure. When they were rescued they had rocks in their stomachs because they were so hungry.
          And another sad part is that neither my dad or brother can come see these guys because most of the wolves are aggressive towards men because that's who abused them.
          Whenever a man walks past cages, all of the wolves start howling up a storm.
          Kind of a let down for those peeps with y chromosomes eh?
            That's pretty cool what you're doing. There aren't too many people that get handle animals like the ones in your pictures.
              Nice that you are volunteering your time. Who knows maybe you will find a real love for it, & go to school for something along those lines.
                  Brilliant pics and a great job by yourself.
                  I love wolves, probably my favourate creature and its really nice you are doing your bit to help them.
                      that may just be perspective... but none of the other pics give him enough credit. Next to the other wolves it would show better how big he really is. And he is big.
                          they are truly beautiful, amazing animals. . . . it's sweet that you're getting this chance to have such close contact with them, that's a pretty unique opportunity-- and you're right, one that i'll admit i'm a little jealous of. . . .
                          anyways, kudos to you for volunteering your time-- so many animals are neglected or abused by humans, it's nice to see someone giving something back and helping to care for them. . . . good for you! :thumb:
                              I haven't really thought of it that way. It seems that when you go in there they are just a bunch of dogs. They've been around humans and are used to people interacting with them.
                              There is something about them though, that is different than dogs that i've noticed.
                              I don't normally let dogs lick my face, I think it's gross. But the wolves? I let them coat my face if they want to.
                              It might be just some sort of sign that they are accepting you and you want them to accept you so you don't mind if they bathe your face. but with a normal dog you don't try as hard to get them to like you, or hope as much that they'll like you
                              There are quite a few differences in the cages between dogs and wolves, but I truly wouldn't call them, "wild animals" because they've been around humans much of their lives.
                              I feel very comfortable with the ones i'm allowed to go in. THe place is a very relaxed environment and I look forward to it all week. I always say, "I'm addicted to the wolves!"
