Soldier killed as son is born
    By The Associated Press

Hixson, Tenn. - A Fort Carson soldier was killed in Iraq over the weekend on the same day his son was born back home, family members said Tuesday.

Sgt. John Michael Sullivan, 21, was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Carson. He was killed Saturday when his Humvee was struck by a roadside bomb, family members said.

His death has not yet been confirmed by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Family members said Sullivan had planned to return home Jan. 10 from his second tour in Iraq to see his son, who was born Saturday.

He volunteered for the patrol on Saturday because another soldier was out sick, relatives said.

Sullivan was injured on his first tour in Iraq by a roadside bomb, but declined a Purple Heart medal because the ceremony would have kept him from returning home on time, his mother, Debbie Sullivan, told WTVC-TV in Chattanooga.

"I'm very proud of him," his grandfather, John Sullivan told WRCB-TV in Chattanooga. "Very proud. His mother's proud of him. We all are." "He was the greatest," his grandmother, Bobbie Sullivan, told WRCB. "He was just like my baby. I always called him my baby. And he was kindhearted. Do anything for you. I don't know how we're gonna get through this."

    How terrible is that

I can't even imagine what that family is feeling.

Tragedy is the nature of the job, sadly.

    Hope his family holds up,

I can only imagine my little girl all grown up wanting to serve her country with enthusiasm and not to come home. It's even painful to imagine. I hope they named the baby after his/her daddy. His family is obviously proud and obviously in pain. "He was the best" they said. It's usually guys just like him who want to serve their country with all their hearts. I hope the soldier who was sick is doing okay knowing his buddy took over his patrol for him and died in the line of duty.
God be with him and his family at this time. Bless them all. Does my appreciation count enough, I often wonder.
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
