A couple years ago a lady killed her kid by making it drink too much water -

you would have thought the radio station would have put a little more thought into the risk factors

I imagine that law suits are in the works now...

Excessive consumption causes the brain to swell.

It's what happens to folks on E. My mother (who is a nurse) used to look after a girl who had a compulsion to drink water, and had to be supervised around taps etc. because given the opportunity she would drink herself into a coma.

How do you think all those people that take Ecstacy die? Their cells become too engulfed in water. They drink so much water that their cells undergo apoptosis.

You are right I believe re the lawsuit. Actually, it wouldn't
hurt if they quit all those contests on this line, (i.e., 50 hot dogs in 5 minutes, 32 hot fudge sundaes in 3 minutes....etc). I've always wondered how people could live after gorging themselves like that, when just dinner sometimes feels like way plenty.

After reading this article, this contest looked like the perfect setup to induce water intoxication. They should have checked with a doctor before conducting this contest. I wonder if they can be held accountable in any way?

I watched a video and heard audio from this contest today. A nurse actually called in during the contest and warned about water intoxication. The DJ's dismissed it and unfortunately the contestants couldn't hear the people calling in so none of them had any warning at all.

Working in a water business I know how too much water can effect the human body.
One glass of deionized water can kill a person by leaching nutrients and minerals from the body.

I learn something new everyday on this board. I was not aware of there being any water that was dangerous, outside of some well waters, and wasn't sure exactly why. So, I looked deionized water up and it said it could be the equivalent to 'distilled' water? So, having that on-hand for emergencies could be deadly? I don't, but it's really good information to know, Reid.

I know from being physically active that you shouldn't drink to much plain water. They say you should drink a sport drink that is somewhere has salt and other minerals mixed in.

I had no idea you could actually die from it, that's a shocker.

No she came in second & won tickets to see Justin Timberlake that night.

Did anyone hear the audio of the actual contest that was released yesterday.
It was crazy, as the AM DJ's were joking about how YOU CAN DIE from drinking too much water.
Then you can hear one DJ laugh and say something to the effect that it wouldn't be their problem because they all signed release forms.

Ya, I heard that this morning on the Adam Corrolla morning show. The DJs were laughing it up saying how it's not their problem if someone dies and how they'd be fine since all of the contestants signed release forms. Little did they know a contestant would actually die. They probably feel horrible now.
