I don't know if this is the best one but I bought
my daughter a Compaq a couple of weeks ago

it was $629.00 with $180.00 in mail in rebates
btw-I hate messing with the rebates but oh well

anyway she is happy with it and my son has one also
and he knows more about them than I do and he said
they are pretty good and I paid more for his about a
    year ago

I bought it at Office Depot...this is it

I have been using laptops now for a while and I can only state one thing.
Cheap and fast do not go together when it comes to laptops. You'll really need to say what you want to use it for before I could help more effectively.
"On a given day, a given circumstance, you think you have a limit. And you then go for this limit and you touch this limit, and you think, 'Okay, this is the limit'. And so you touch this limit, something happens and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high."

this is true....aren't most new PCs fast and it depends on the
type of connection you have like dial up vs cable...

Don't listen to what those other idiots brain-washed by Bill Gates are saying.

                  Windows are BAD

MAC IS THE WAY TO GO!

MacBooks start at $1,099, but are way worth it. Macs are way better than Windows. You can do so much more things with a Mac. Macs are very very easy to use too. There's a hotkey for nearly everything. You can do most computer functions without even using the mouse.

I personally use a Toshiba machine, but, they have a problem with overheating. At least my model did. My moms is much better about that. You can probably find a reliable cheap laptop using Newegg. Its my personal favorite website for finding technology.

Also, as to operating sytems, it really depends on what you are going to use the computer for. If its for work/study, a PC is fine. You can customize it with different programs you want if you want to begin doing extra things. If you need it for multimedia purposes, Id still say PC just for the variety of programs available. Macs do seem to have a smaller learning curve, but, cost a lot more, and I have never found them to be reliable (at least my roomates isnt ).

Here is a link to reviews and many laptops in your price range. Check them out and get one that can do what you want. Make sure you get one that has a great replacement plan. Mac's are not the best choice because of price and compatibility. There are a lot less programs around for Mac's and they cost more, forget finding someone to fix it down the road. Try to find one that you can get service by a service center close to you.

Here are a couple of good options for you:

                            http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/...oductDetail.do

Or if you can afford a smidge more than your $800 max:

                            http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshi...oductDetail.do

Personally, I love the 17" widescreen option. It also has a number pad onboard, if you like those.

If you get any of these, just make sure you send in for the rebate to get the listed price. Good luck!
