  • Ahhhh... One of the many uses of panda poop.

I thought this was mildly funny and interesting....

BEIJING- There's a new Chinese saying: When life hands you panda poop, make paper. Researchers at a giant panda reserve in southern China are looking for paper mills to process their surplus of fiber-rich panda excrement into high quality paper.
Liao Jun, a researcher at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Base in Sichuan province, said the idea came to them after a visit to Thailand last year where they found paper made from elephant dung. They thought panda poop would produce an even finer quality paper, he said.

The base is currently in talks with several paper mills on how to turn the droppings of Jing Jing, Ke Bi, Ya Ya and dozens of other pandas at the base into reams of office paper and rolls of wrapping paper, said Liao.

They hope to have a product line available by next year, he said.

"We are not interested in doing this for the profits but to recycle the waste," said Liao. "It's environmentally friendly. We can use the paper ourselves and also we can sell whatever is left over."

The center's 40 bamboo-fed pandas produce about 2 tons of droppings a day, but Liao said he was not sure yet how much paper would result.

What about squeamish customers who might consider the paper unsanitary?

"People won't find it gross at all," Liao said. "They probably won't even be able to tell it's from panda poop."

The Chiang Mai Zoo in northern Thailand already sells multicolored paper made from the excrement produced by its two resident pandas. Making paper there involves a daylong process of cleaning the feces, boiling it in a soda solution, bleaching it with chlorine and drying it under the sun.

    Would you use the paper??

It has been bleached to death so I'm pretty sure it wouldn't smell 'poopy'!

Good idea though to minimise waste!

I agree, it shouldn;t be much of a worry, but it is weird to think the reason you have paper is because a white and black bear pooh'ed it out :p.

When I saw this story, for some reason I thought of the bank robber who handed the teller a note, and when the police officer on duty there approached him, he paniced and quickly put the note in his mouth. Imagine if it were panda dung paper.... sure its sanitary and all... but it still an unappetiazing prospect . My brain connects things in strange ways in the early dawn....

I would rather not. If they export it, I hope it's labeled properly. Not just 'recycled materials'.

                id use it for sure

but one has to wonder how they came up with the ideal for the proper consistancy. elephant dung < panda dung who in their right mind would know that panda dung would be able to produce a finer quality paper. i mean does it depend on the panda's eating habits vrs. the elephant

what if the panda or elephant ate corn would the paper have little yellow marks on it?
i know they dont eat corn (or i think they dont) but what if

im all for saving some trees and preserving the rain forest so id buy it.

Yea, very little people know about me that I'm very concerned with the environment.

After watching Expedition Borneo on the Discovery Channel, it has made me even more concerned (which I thought at first was impossible).

I guess I would rather use this paper than drink Kopi Luwak coffee (coffee beans that pass through the digestive system of a palm civet, a cat-like creature).

Yes, I will not be going out of my wy to try the Kopi Luwak anytime soon..... that's just a little... weird.

I thought this excerpt was also mildly funny...

The bean finishes its journey through the digestive system, and exits. The still-intact beans are collected from the forest floor, and are cleaned, then roasted and ground just like any other coffee.

The resulting coffee is said to be like no other. It has a rich, heavy flavour with hints of caramel or chocolate. Other terms used to describe it are earthy, musty and exotic. The body is almost syrupy and it's very smooth.
Maybe they could remarket it as Hershey coffee in America
