  • Psycho in Colorado!

GRAND COUNTY - An armed man, driving a piece of heavy equipment, destroyed several buildings in the town of Granby Friday afternoon. Witnesses said he was using the equipment like an armored vehicle, crashing into buildings.

Lurline Curran, Grand County manager, says the person is driving a large piece of Caterpillar machinery.

"He has moved methodically from west to east, demolishing, or trying to demolish certain structures," said Curran. She said, so far, there have been no reports of injuries.

Curran said police moved in a big scraper out of the landfill trying to block the bulldozer's way.

She said that didn't stop the advance. The armored vehicle was moving west out of Granby in an unpopulated area.

"We are doing everything we can to stop this chaos," she said. Curran said shots had been fired. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said that it has SWAT officers on the way.

Scott Schaffer spoke by cell phone to 9NEWS when the armored vehicle was just a block away.

"He drove through a cement plant, wiped out town hall, took out the newspaper office," said Schaffer. Schaffer said that the town hall building didn't completely collapse, but the other two buildings did.

Curran said that the man also plowed into the bank.

Julie Cautrell, with Cautrell Excavating, also spoke with 9NEWS from Granby. She said that if the driver had a full tank of gas, the Caterpillar could keep going for another hour or two. She said that there are 35 to 50 small businesses in the town as well as two gas stations.

Granby is a town north of Winter Park, near Rocky Mountain National Park. Police are evacuating residents in the area.

9NEWS has a crew on the way and will continue to update this story.

Alright - who let certain members of this place out of their padded cells???

Wow, this is AWESOME!! What a great way to go out!! I'm sure this guy probably got screwed over by the town. Talk about kicking butt, this is almost like that guy that stole the M1A1 Abrams tank like 10 years ago.

Nothin' like a little asskickin in a 100,000 pound bulldozer to show who's boss!!! ROFL! As long as no one gets injured or killed besides the perpatrator, I think it's great. Besides, knowing those mountain towns, these buildings were probably really crappy anyways, and now they get brand new ones thanks to insurance!! I always thought my home town of Larkspur, CO, could really use a good bulldozing.

Props to this guy for the brass ones he displayed, maybe now the town will think twice about screwing over the little guy!

          ROFL!

Actually the bank & library were both pretty new...(those were hit after that article was posted)

            The guy is dead now.

Apparantly he had already gone through all the legal courses of action to get rid of the cement factory people were going to be building on/next to his property.

Right now, I wouldn't be surprised if this happened near me as well - In Arvada, they've been fighting over eminant domain/wal*mart for a while - apparantly they want to drain part of a lake to build a wal*mart & shut down quite a few businesses in the area in the meantime.
