  • Just moved in to new place, already problem with neighbor, any advice?

I just moved into my new house 2 days ago. From the moment I walked in, I noticed that the neighbor's little white dog is stuck outside on a 6-foot rope tied to a table.

This dog was out there from about 5pm to 2 am, and it would not stop barking...it constantly barks. (I sleep during the day, so I went to bed this morning, and woke up around 1pm to the dog barking.

I called the police dept. and they said that they were taking priority calls only this weekend, and told me to "call back in 1 or 2 hours" if it is still barking, and they may have an officer available.

I was able to get back to sleep, only to wake up around 7:30pm to the dog still barking...I went to work at 10:30pm, and it was still barking.

What should I do? Should I confront the Owner? (who I have never seen, but there are clearly people home during this whole time) Or try calling the police again? I want to be able to sleep too!

Yep - call the humane society. Not only is it a noise nuisance, but the dog may be being neglected. They put that noisey little pooch outside, because THEY don't want to listen to him bark or bother training him properly.

Ask what the laws are at your humane society, but ours are 3 warnings, and then a $500.00 fine. Hey - talking to your neighbor will only make hard feelings. They know what they are doing, and they know that dog barks.

If you DO talk with your new neighbor, it may start you out on the wrong footing getting along, and hey.....you have to live together in that neighborhood a long time. Neighbors I love, but you have to get to know neighbors before you complain directly to them --- I personally like the joking approach, but neighbors don't usually respond well to a new neighbor moving into THEIR neighborhood complaining about them directly.
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I would confront the neighbor because either way they'll know you called the humane society, so why not let them know what you think of the nuisance and if they don't fix the problem take another step in the phone call. If they get mouthy, take'em down then let the dog off the rope and put the neighbor on the leash and see if they like it.J/K

Always try to settle things like this at the lowest level possible, first.

Calling the cops off the bat was the wrong move IMO.

Confront the neighbors. Ask them politely to take care of it because it is a hinderance (sp?) and is affecting your sleep. If they fail to take care of it, call the humane society and go from there.

First off you should have contacted the owner...NOT call the police. Always always always try to solve your problems at the lowest level first. If my neighbor, whom I've never met, called the cops on me because of my dog and didn't talk to me first, well then he would be a jerk and I would not associate with him.

Talk to your neighbor. if he blows you off then involve the cops. A barking dog is no reason to call the cops first thing. I worked nights for years. Guess what, everyone else lives in the daytime. You will have to get used to an increased level of noise.

If the dog has no shade and is left out for hours during the heat of the day then cal the humane society.

Neighbors also respond poorly to having the cops or humane society called on them by the new neighbor who just moved into the neighborhood and didn't even have the common courtesy to talk to them first.

Not every problem requires the cops or the humane society. Give your neighbor a chance first before you drive an avoidable wedge between you and someone you may live next to for years.

I agree completely. They're gonna know it's you who called it in on them. Give them a shot to take care of it nicely. Just be real with them and explain your situation, especially the fact that you sleep during the day. Maybe they'll understand and you'll have avoided a bad scene. If that doesn't work, you have to do what you have to do, but you gave it a shot, you know?

when I used to work nights, I had a few problems with noisy neighbours.

I found that going and knocking on their door, and having a word with them did the trick. Most people do not realise when they have a neighbour working nights.

                          Call your local Animal Control.

On my way home from work there is a horse that is out in the sun with No shade! It has been in the 100's here! I called animal control and within a few days the horse had shade!

They should be able to help and your neighbor wont know who called!

                          Good Luck!

Shoot the dog with water from your hose.
