  • Damn spam in the email...

When I moved last year I changed internet service and got a brand spankin' new email address with the account. However, since I still use my old one and didn't want to have to update it with everyone, I've never EVER used. I've never submitted it anywhere. In fact, I wasn't even sure what the address was until just recently.

So, imagine my surprise when I checked for new messages for the first time since the day I opened the account around a year ago and found over 1,000 emails in there all spam except for about 10 actually from my internet provider. I did a quick scan of the dates and found that within a couple of weeks I had gotten my first spam email and got another every 1-2 weeks. Shortly after it increased to about once a week, then a couple a week and it progressed upwards to about 10 or so a DAY!

Did I mention that I've NEVER used this address? I don't know how that email address got on anybody's spam list unless my internet provider sold it, the bastards.

Anyway, I thought I'd list some of the interesting subjects (some are for adults only and I'm actually leaving out some of the raunchiest ones):

    And my personal favorite:

And that is just a very small sampling. A "large" percentage were about male member enhancement or viagra. Quite a few porn, online medication, loans, dates, credit fixing, stock advice, casinos, "Fill out this form and return in", get your diploma, lawyers. What a bunch of crap! I'm thinking about calling and personally thanking my internet provider.

I can't tell you how many times my wife would wake me up at 3am with a printout of an email of the likes you mentioned (porn). She would be doing transcription work and take a break to check on email.
I thought I was heading for the big d more than a couple times.
Even now, with spam filters, they have figured out how to get around them, evidently by using names in the sender area.

        Will this never end?

Uh, huh..I know what you mean RC, one time I accidentally left my email open and my mom wandered onto it and found porn in it...She was wondering why it was on there...I thought my mom was going to ground me from the computer...And no I dont think it will ever end...and pop-ups...Why would you want to waste your time creating viruses that will kill other peoples computers? I think its stupid...

Really, you get over 1,000 of those when you check your email? Heh, I'm still just amazed that I never once used that email address and still got super-spammed.

Well, my wife gets worse in her email so maybe I should rake her over the coals a bit. Hmm...

Jav - have you tried installing spybot Search & destroy? (download.com has it)...You may have some spy ware on your computer...Also, many times some companies (even your ISP) will sell your email information. They also have random generators.

You can also get SpamPal - which adds "*SPAM*" to the subject line and you can set up filters for any messages marked *SPAM* to immediately get deleted.

I'm lucky so far - I rarely get spammed in most of my email addresses because I keep things cleaned off of my computer - I use my various email addresses on many forms online & whatnot - but I'm pretty vigilant about keeping my spam filters up & going. Also, I use incredimail to check all of my hotmail addresses - it lets me "bounce" messages back to the sender as if to appear like I never recieved it - I do that quite often to spam accounts & also to people who send me nothing but forwards...hehe

Also, a word to the wise for everyone - DO NOT sign up for publishers clearing house online!!! You know how much junkmail you get via the postal system if you sign up for the free sweepstakes? Well multiply that by about 500 - that is how much junk email you get from them - plus they sell your email address & it's just a mess. My manager used her work email to sign up for that - I've been dealing with de-spamming/de-virusing/etc her computer for months now!

Yep, I use Ad-aware 6.0 which is a great, free spyware/adware remover. And my ISP claims they don't give out their customers' email addresses. So, your guess is as good as mine.

On a side note, I don't use any anti-virus software but I've never had a computer virus. I've had some emails come in that had viruses (I research emails with attachments if they look fishy) but deleted them before they infected my computer. Checking for Windows updates fairly often really helps.

I can't understand why some people (spammers/virus creators) just try to ruin a good thing, the internet.

Actually that might be your problem right there - Ad-Aware its-self, I've heard, eventually creates it's own stuff on the computer after going so long without donating/purchasing a better version...I would run spybot on top of it (also a free one - but has been better to me).

Hmm...I hadn't heard anything about that. That wouldn't seem to be a wise move by a company that needs a good reputation to succeed. If true and word got out, it could ruin their business.

                            I'll check into Spybot.

Tis what I've been told by many people - it won't catch a lot of stuff & all kinds of other problems with it - and the problems it causes don't start for something like 6 months or so once it's been installed, etc.
