EJs 6 mil will go to nate which will be a wash.
When Bo is Due sammy will likely be offloaded.
The cap is expected to take a MAJOR jump after that.
Joe has been sniffing around Patty Kane and he has like a 10 mil hit. There is a way. We have enough guys coming from prospects to fill in for whomever. They were not lying when they said if Kadri walks we can fill from in house.

Joe has been working this masterfully and we will see if Mac does the same (or if Joe is assisting with it). We offered a 2x7.5. They would not have done that if they could not afford it. If they did not have a plan.
Assuming the cap goes up the same amount next year as it did this year, they'll have about $26.5M in cap space next season with just 12 guys signed. Let's say Nate gives them a big discount and takes 10M. That's 16.5M to sign 11 guys, but then remember that you probably gave Newhook and Byram a 3M raise each. So that's 8.5M (because they were both already making ~1M). Add in your proposed 7.5M for Kadri and that leaves 1 million bucks to fill 8 roster spots. Even if you trade Girard for nothing that's still only 6M to fill 9 roster spots (because you have to replace Girard).

There's no way around it. They're already losing Toews no matter what in 2 years. Then you trade Girard for cap space and you're still in cap hell with big holes in the defense to fill. Which leads to losing a top 6 forward.

There is no way they can afford a top six of Landeskog, MacKinnon, Rantanen, Nichushkin, Kadri, and Lehkonen after this coming season. Not unless you want a league minimum guy filling 3 defensemen spots and 10 bottom 12 forward spots, and even then it's cutting it close.

The only way it's feasible is if MacKinnon takes the biggest hometown discount of all time AND Kadri signs for cheap and short term.

    Anyone seen Jake Plummer?

    • eh, we will see. Depends if we snag kane from the hawks at some point this year. If we do then maybe. If not, you will see how they manage it just fine. We have plenty of guys that will be coming up. We have drafted well. We dont have a lot of picks next year either but enough prospects in the pool.
      So far:
      FA- Melvin Gordon. Brandon Scherff
      1. Kenneth Murray LB; 2. Shenault WR; 2B. Biadazz Center, 3. OT

The only way Kane comes here is if the Hawks retain at least half his contract.

And my numbers account for these guys coming up. You're only going to get a few hundred thousand dollars of savings replacing Cogliano and Helm with rookie minimum guys. Then you also have to replace Compher, EJ, and Girard with minimum contracts and you still have to trade someone else and/or let Newhook walk for nothing, again replacing them with minimum guys. And still lose Toews no matter what. And this assumes you ride with MacDermid or MacDonald as your extra D instead of someone more tested like JJ.

If they keep Kadri after next season it means replacing at least 6, maybe as many as 8, of the current guys on the team with league minimum contracts.

It sounds like kadri may be gone to the Isles. Is this a sign and trade maybe?

          • Don't link to Adrian Dater. He doesn't deserve the clicks. A complete embarrassment to the profession of journalism. The only "reporting" he does anymore is checking his twitter feed and rehashing it as things he "heard"

But I expect Kadri will sign with the Islanders, and no, it won't be a sign and trade.

              Always wondered about him.

I saw something else stating that the Red Wings are in play. If that happened we might see Detroit in the Finals soon...

Dater was literally handed his job as the Avs beat writer.

He was at the Denver Post as an intern covering a high school hockey tournament. A phone call came in asking to talk to "the hockey guy" and that phone call happened to be a tip about the Nordiques being sold and moved to Denver. Right place, right time.

Detroit is nothing right now. They gave out some truly horrible contracts this offseason. Naz or no Naz, they're not contenders and won't be soon.

                • Jack Johnson to the Blackhawks on a one year deal.

All things considered the Avs got much more out of JJ than they expected. Glad he got to raise the cup here, he seems like a great dad and a good guy that got screwed over by his parents (they got his power of attorney took out tons of high interest loans against his future earnings and bankrupted him).

                  • Nazem Kadri to the Calgary Flames, 7 years at 7 million per.

That's going to be a really, really bad contract in a few years.

                    Thanks for the memories, Naz.

Now the Avs need to go get Stastny or Rodrigues.

                    • Calgary made out pretty well this offseason after losing Gaudreau and Tkachuk. Got Huberdeau, Weegar and Kadri in return.

Sucks to see Kadri go but hopefully it's better in the long term. With the reports of Mackinnon wanting to be the highest paid player in the league now, does anyone think there's a chance we trade him?

If he wants to be the highest paid player, imo it's best to get what we can out of trading him. I could see a team like Toronto massively overpaying for his services. Mackinnon probably won't be the best player on the team in the future with Makar here, and I think a player like Makar is more valuable than what Mackinnon brings (even though he's still a really good 2 way center). We wouldn't be able to field that good of a competitive team overpaying him and then Makar down the road, and we could really build up a future powerhouse with the large haul that we would get from trading him.

Mackinnon has a 12-team no trade clause. I wonder what the reasons are for him wanting to be the highest paid player now after saying he would take less last offseason to win championships. I guess winning one may be enough for him (if those reports are true). Perhaps Kadri not returning played into it.

                        2. MacKinnon might be the highest paid in terms of cap hit per season for one year, as McDavid is on a 12.5M cap hit, but McDavid is actually making 16M+ in cash and his next contract will push 20M. MacKinnon just came up to his free agency year at the right time (26 years old, just won the Cup).

So no, they shouldn't trade MacKinnon. The range for his salary was always going to be in the 11.5-13.5M per year area and he's well worth that. Rantanen is already making over 9M per.

That doesn’t mean dump Mackinnon just because she wants to get paid what he deserves to be paid.

Makar is signed through 2027 and, much like the deal MacKinnon has been playing on, it's a ridiculously huge bargain for us. Makar's deal has literally no bearing on whether or not they re-sign MacKinnon, which they will.
