  • Is emo dead as a music genre?

What has happened to all the good emo bands* gone these days?

It seems as if all the music that is played today is these crappy indie-rock garbage. It is sickening to listen to.

Around 2003 or so I was buying 2-3 CDs a week. This year I have only bought 2 brand new CD's.

What the heck is going on?

*bands such as Further Seems Forever, The Promise Ring, The Juliana Theory, The Appleseed Cast, Rocking Horse Winner, Sunny Day Real Estate, etc.

Well the Juliana Theory broke up... they were a favorite of mine.

There are a lot of emo/alt. rock bands out.

Instead of being so emo, they have developed a steady rock beat that ties in with pain/love/etc.

Well it's about time. I swear (being one of them) young people have no appreciation for what good music is anymore. One day when everyone out grows all of this crappy music; emo, punk, hip hop, rap... They'll have no idea what to do with themselves... "Well i've been listening to garbage all my life, what do I listen to now?"

      I'll respect anything good musically...

Learn your rock history now kids.

Defining what is "good" can only be done by each individual listener. One can't measure it any other way...including the case in which one so arrogantly and erroneously assumes that his/her particular judgement of what "good" music is, is the standard in which others must follow.

I saw them in Milwaukee a few years back...it was a great show. They were along with Hey Mercedes, Dashboard, and Alkaline Trio.

It's been taken over by scene/emo kids claiming to be different when they dye their hair, take overhead pictures on myspace and make stupid peace signs...just like the millions of other scene/emo kids.

Not to mention listening to what the media gives them musically such as Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco and Boys Like Girls.

            My suggestion: Be yourself.

Emo music is as dead as the endless mist of my soul. It's wretched branches stretch out as it's roots suck up the last bit of happiness in my pool of inner being. My black mascara drips as the tears flow on the last pages of my life story, and my lips curl up as I cry- EMO IS DEAD!

              Good riddance....

Eh, nobody is these days. You hit the nail on the head, they mold themselves into a unconventional person and claim to be different, yet they are still conforming themselves to another large genre of youngsters (can't believe I used that word, being 19 myself). It's frustrating, really. This is one of the largest concepts I stress when I talk to many of my friends, particularly the younger groups (I'm 'wise' for my age)--just be yourself.

The anime crowd, for example, I have many friends whom have been a part of this group. I'll take one girl in particular who usually doesn't like thinks because they're mainstream, essentially saying "it's too liked". Then whenever they find somebody who likes what they do its a good thing. Not to mention there's the mainstream anime, which is okay...meh. It's frustrating watching them pretend to be different, when in reality and outside their bubble they're all classed together the same way. Just like emo kids are. They think they're different, but they're all the same in the end--because they were trying to be different.

Eh, I could ramble on about for a while, but whenever I do I get the feeling people seem to skip over my post because it's too long. Point is, don't try to be just like anybody, but don't try not to be something either (if that makes sense).

I think I will cut myself now.

In all seriousness, just do whatever you feel like. No music/art/whatever is dumb/better because it is popular or non-mainstream.

Yeah I agree with liking something no matter how mainstream it is.

<3 Taylor Swift and Hannah Montana

What I meant by "good" music was something done with an instrument. I would consider making fatty beats and most hip hop not "good" music. Take Jazz for an example, not my genre of choice... but I have nothing but respect for Jazz players because that is some of the most difficult music to play on the planet.

I don't like jazz at all!! I don't get it. I like playing concert band music (a perfect genre of classical music for someone who plays the oboe like me).

I knew it was in when I started seeing 13-year old girls at shows.

I am not trying to be anything when I listen to music, I listen because I like it. Listening to emo for me is cathartic. If I am feeling down/upset/anxious/sad listening to this particular genre of music (more than any other) makes me feel good inside....I don't listen to it because of the fashion.

If I wanted to listen to a genre of music that is all about fashion, I would listen to more Hardcore.

I think emo music has some good beats and guitars to it.

From Autumn to Ashes - No Trivia.. .that is a tight song, but doesn't sound one bit emoish about dying and cutting wrist crap.
