  • Re-Makes

It seems like they are just re-making everything now. I love a lot of re-makes but also feel some should be left alone. What does everyone else think about re-makes?

Also I just found out... Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly will be in the re-make... Now get this. Remake of Robert Wise's 1951 sci-fi classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

It's seems as though there's been a lot of them. I Am Legend was the second remake of an old movie.

I heard the book was great. It was actually the third... in a way.

I have not seen them yet but I have been hearing they have had a tough time putting a ending on film that lives up to the book.

I personally like remakes.. I would never watch an older movie normally. Half the time I don't even know its a remake until after I see it. It gives other genreations a chance to see older movies.. redone and more up to date.

I think "I am Legend" was a remake of the old classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

Sometimes I'm a fan of the re-make. But I understand the reasoning behind their thinking. There was a lot of really really good movies in the past. The stories and plots were entertaining. But the younger generation won't watch black-n-white movies. So use the old story lines, use modern actors, and bring back the popularity of a classic story.

As to the question of why they re-make movies, it all goes back to money. As has been said, people steer clear of old movies, so when they re-make it--it's as if it's a completely new story. Only, for the production company, they just throw in new age actors and new age effects and don't even have to have a story--it's already been written and proved successful (evident in its first release).

Generally I hate the idea of remakes, but there are some exceptions.

The Last Man on Earth ( 1964 Vincent Price) and The Omega Man (1971 Charlton Heston) were the first 2 film versions. I'm glad I am Legend gets another chance. I love The Last Man on Earth, but most people haven't seen it. Some would turn their noses up at the thought of watching a black and white film (one of the many things I was never meant to understand), but I recommend it. I really WANTED to like The Omega Man, but it's a terrible movie, IMO..... what a wasted opportunity. In this case, there is nothing wrong with giving the big budget release a chance.

Classics, however, should be left alone for the most part. The Omen, for example, should never have been messed with. Unlike the new version of Halloween, nothing new was attempted.... the end result of the new version of The Omen is a virtually a scene-for-scene remake with lesser actors :brick::brick: . Halloween: I was sceptical, but love the new version (I'm not saying it trumps the original).

I cringe at the thought of a remake of something like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly....just to piss me off, they'd have Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck, and Keanu Reeves in the roles of Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach .

Seriously. Read it. About 95% of it takes place in his mind, so there is virtually no way they can adapt it accurately. But it is an amazing read, especially in tone, and the ending was awesome. Plus, the copy that I bought came with half a dozen or so short stories at the end of it.

this would be a travesty among horrors.

although dicaprio is clearly the talented of the three (though that's not saying much), first, a re-make would be murder.

and if they did, they'd have to work really hard to find actors to do it well enough. dicaprio, while i love his work, would be wrong.

i mean, you can't compare those performances... i'd throw Bale in there though because Bale is my favorite and he's dedicated enough that maybe he'd care enough to want to "honor" the original.

but either way....remaking movies like that is just pure murder of film. and already the death-rate is high and climbing.

okay so i was going to ask what it's a remake of...

                            but then i looked.

however, i don't think t.v. movies count. it's like the new Knight Rider (which my friend is actually working on). it's a re-make t.v. movie of a television show.

hmmm. now is that a remake or just a "full length feature" version of a t.v. show? we all know they do feature film versions of t.v. shows all the time.

                            so....

I think they're okay in some cases. 3:10 to Yuma was a pretty decent flick that I never heard of until the remake came out. Hell the original came out in 1957.

But in come cases, they are completely unnecessary. They are remaking The Warriors. Why? That film is a cult classic. It is well made, well written, and well acted. Plus it came out in 1979! It's not that old! You could probably still find it at any store that sells DVDs. I don't understand. I really don't.

I said it before and I'll say it again. 50 bucks says that the remake won't be as good as the original.
