  • Books you wish were movies.

So its late, I am blowing off HW, not a good habit to start I guess but I figure while I'm up, I'll just ask this.

Which book would you like to see made as a movie?

    I have two

    Gates of Fire, Stephen Pressfield-

A novel about Thermopylae from a very interesting perspective. I found reading this book was much more entertaining than watching "300" which is based off a graphic novel and thus has many historical oversights. "Gates of Fire" Lends much more to the historical perspective of the events leading up to the battle and the battle itself. For instance, Leonidas' age, (He was almost 60 when the battle was fought) The Thespians who stood with the Spartans to the end (Most people believe it was only the Spartans who remained after the majority of the Greeks retreated, but a force of several hundred Thespians remained behind to stand and die with the Spartans). If it was made a movie I think it could tell the story much more effectively than "300", simply because the best stories are the ones that are believable and based more deeply in fact and truth.

A Song of Ice and Fire, George RR Martin-

I know there are a few fans out there on these boards. The only real drawback of making a movie of this series is the sheer length and detail that would have to be emphasized. So far there are 4 books, with a 5th one coming out soon (hopefully), and each is at least 700 pages with some that are over 1000. And these arent light pages, they are laden with intricate detail and weaving complex storylines. There are many characters with very important roles, you simply couldnt pick out a singular main character if you tried. That being said, these books are extremely entertaining. George RR Martin has done a great job at keeping the reader guessing with many twists and turns. I have read each book several times over(Yes theyre that good) And I sometimes uncover an underlying storyline I missed on the first go round. Even I couldnt give you a real concrete answer if you asked me how I think the series will finish. I am really excited for the new book (comes out in the fall I believe?) and to see where Martin takes the story.

Anyone please feel free to give your thoughts on mine and what books you would like to see hit the big screen.

It all depends. It depends on the actors, the director, the writers, and the author(s).
If you have ****ty actors, a mediocre director, a writer who can't adapt the novel into a incredible screenplay and an author who just wants to see the $$$...then it doesn't matter how amazing the novel is the movie will be ****.
I've only seen two very successful and just perfect novel to movie adaptions...and that what Fight Club and Trainspotting.

      ah good thread!!!

I wish the rest of Tom Clancy's books were made into movies.

      Red Sun Rising
      Debt of Honor
      Executive Decision
      Rainbow Six
      Teeth of the Tiger
      Red Rabbit
      Cardinal of the Kremlin
      The Bear and the Dragon
      No Remorse

I wish they'd remake The Sum of All Fears to actually follow the damn book. They totally screwed that movie up so bad, it was insanely stupid, and not even close to the book.

Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, and the Hunt for Red October all follow the books pretty closely.

I wish they'd stick with one actor for Jack Ryan though. I thought Harrison Ford did the best job of all the actors. Ben Affleck sucked, although I did like Alec Baldwin in Hunt for Red October.

I love all his books, and have read all of them...best military fiction books ever written.

Would love to see some Discworld books come to the big screen. Huge fan of Terry Pratchett.

Dante's Inferno could make a wicked cool horror flick. Probably have to take some creative license with the plot, but the imagery is enough to scare the sin out of most people.

Excellent series! Don't know how they would ever do justice to them in movie form, though.

Stephen R. Donaldson's "Gap into..." sci-fi series would make for a wild set of movies, too.

I was actually thinking that the Harry Potter series would make for a pretty good set of flicks.... any ideas on who they'd use?

Ha I was about to post that.

I often wonder who would be in Dante's circles in today's world, some are a given, but what about those we would not expect from Dante?

                            yes... Yes... YES!!!

You already know I'm a huge fan, but did you know that HBO has been given the green light to film the pilot of the Game of Thrones series? As others have mentioned there would be no way to do a typical 2 hour movie and do even one of these books justice. GRRM has stated that even a "Lord of the Rings" style trilogy movie event of 9 to 12 hours wouldn't work very well either.

I've heard that, when done, the first book alone could be 20 to 24 one hour episodes!!! For those that haven't read the books then that gives you an idea of the level of complexity that Cutlers'theMan and Flatlander mentioned. These are possibly the best books I've ever read, all genres included. The story, characters, setting, etc are simply amazing and it's something that just about anybody will enjoy. Everybody that I've recommended them to has loved them; no matter what kind of books they typically enjoy. So, if you've never read them then my advice is to go to Amazon or your local bookstore and buy "A Game of Thrones". You'll be glad you did and will be waiting anxiously with the rest of us for both the series on HBO and the next book...

Links regarding this... It is known.

GRRM's blog entry about the HBO pilot green light:
HBO has given the production order. They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES. It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass. It should. David Benioff and…

I CANNOT wait for this series to begin. Seriously, it's the only reason I would require HBO at this point. I hear there are some other good series on (or upcoming), but I don't care. I want GRRM in live action.

By the way, if he doesn't release the fifth book soon, I'm going to track his wrinkly ass down and demand to see a manuscript.
