Once you've seen it you will know exactly what I'm talking about so i'm going to
try and keep the first post broad so it doesn't spoil too much.

Don't read much more if you don't want slight hints at what happens!!!!!

I honestly think this is the one of the most clever movies ever made. Everything
that happens can be interpreted BOTH ways (once you've seen it you'll know the
2 ways). Absolutely everything could be argued from both sides, I'm still at a loss
for what is the truth and what isn't.

Don't READ ANY MORE IF YOU DOT WANT HINTS!!!

At first I thought DiCaprio's convo with the Warden there was the key to deciding
true or false with his talk about the Dr. wanting to "tame" him but the warden
saying he can't be tamed. I'll have to see the movie again and really pay attention
now that I know what happens to see if I can pick up on any clues.

    Great movie though.

And what I mean here is at first I thought this meant he was actually sane and
the Dr's were just trying to convince him otherwise. The convo with the Warden
was the warden telling him that the Dr. thinks he can convince him (DiCaprio) that
he (DiCaprio) is insane. But the warden thinks that he knows people like DiCaprio
and knows it won't work. He is too "violent" to allow something like that happen
and just sit back and watch.

But reconsidering it he (the Warden) could just in fact mean that the Dr thinks
he can make him realize he is insane and the Warden just feels that DiCaprio
is always going to remain the violent, insane man he is.

I must say, the feeling I had at the end of the movie was that DiCaprio was just
faking believing he was insane because he knew he had to. And when he was
acting what the asylum considered insane again, the next day while smoking, he
was trying to get taken to the Brain Experiment/surgery area. But alas the movie
    ended allowing for the debate....

DiCaprio's character, was he in fact insane and really role playing the whole thing
out or was he sane and the Dr's are attempting to keep the island a secret by
keeping him there and convincing him he's insane??

SPOILER ALERT LOOK AWAY IF YOU DONT WANT TO SEE

        I mean it!!

I dont know if DiCaprio was insane or not. Why allow a seriously violent patient to wander Ward C without anyone else watching him? Why did Sheehan(sp?) play up the possibility that he had been caught up by some psych ops group in the Mausoleum? Why keep trying to get him onto the ferry at the end?

On the other hand, the deputy warden said that they knew the "Marshalls" were in the Mausoleum, he knew exactly how to get to that one patient by scribbling his pencil, how Nois was whispering Laeddius in C.

        A complete mindbend.

I thought a few new points today that support him being insane:

          1) The band-aid on DiCaprio's head the whole movie, was it possibly a place were
the Doctors had tried some sort of "brain surgery" on him previously??

          2) In DiCaprio's first dream about his wife she is burning/turning into ash but he
looks down at his hands, which were on her stomach, and they were covered in
blood. In his last flashback/dream we learn that his supposed wife was shot in the
stomach by him, so could the blood on his hands in the first dream be a slight memory
          of what really happened?

          3) I think at the end of the movie when the Dr made DiCaprio admit, out loud,
what really happened but the next day he had snapped back into his insane
theory, it seems to me like he (DiCaprio) was faking going back to those thoughts
because he can't live with knowing his wife murdered his kids and he killed her.
He wants to the labotomy so it will make him a zombie and he won't be thinking
about it anymore, which would in fact mean he is insane... or he could just say
it to see this lab and is actually sane.

          So confusing!

I think the Dr. and everyone else on that island was trying to make a sane LeoNardo believe he was insane.

I think his partner was a secret agent for the Doctor as well, and that all the drugs he had been taking and food he had been eating since he got there was what triggered all the halucinations and is what made the Doctor convince him he was mad for a bit.

Then, at the end of the movie, I think Leonardo realizes he is not insane, and that none of what the doctor told him was true, I think he then "pretended" to be "insane" so that they would take him to the place where they did labotamys and experiments on people, so he could take them down.

The movie is designed for the viewer to make up his own ending though I believe. I liked it a lot.

I would like to believe that, but if you look back at all the clues they all point to him being insane. Its a shame really. I was likin the nazi consipiracy torture lighthouse uncovering myself.

i loved the movie but i was completely mind blown the whole time haha

i was thinking the docs were trying to make him think he was insane all the way up till the end then im pretty sure he was actually insane (when he sat down with his primary doc and said that he was too smart for the guards)

but i wonder why people were going crazy when he mentioned andrew laitus when interviewing the patients . . . was it because the doctors threatened them not to reveal the truth or what, and what was with the "run" note he was handed

but im pretty sure in the end he was legitly insane all along, i mean those anagrams seem like a stretch to be coincidence, and if he doesnt know hes a harm to everyone then in order to prevent the surgery in the docs mind it may have been worth it to let him roam an island that he cant escape

just a crazy movie, it was kinda like hide and seek and the secret window but this one was a lot more interesting and in depth i hated both those movies

So many things didn't make sense in this movie

                    - if Leonardo was insane, then why did he act so differently in his last scene when talking to his "partner" then earlier in the movie???
                    - "RUN" on the letter?
                    - The Lady in the cave
                    - Why did his wife go insane?
                    - His quote at the end of the movie "Is it better to live as a monster or die a good man?"

So many other things as well I'm sure, I still don't know what to think of it.

Remember how he said it seemed like the patients were coached on what to say? Well they were, because the doctors wanted them to play along in the fantasy. When he mentioned Andrew Laitus, they got scared because he called himself Andrew Laitus, and he had become a monster, like how he beat the crap outta that one guy in cell block C.

She said run because she knew of the role playing fantasy that the doctors were putting him through, just see my above post lol

The lady in the cave was a halucination, just like the rats that came out of the rocks. I forgot the exact quote, but I think his wife talked about how it felt like there were rats pulling on her brain or something like that.

His wife was mentally unstable and depressed because of his drinking after the war. Thats partly why he felt so guilty and believed he was the one who got his kids killed, because he was drinking so much that he couldnt see the warning signs.

Ya know how he stated that he was Andrew at the end, like he hadnt gotten the message that he was crazy? Well he did get the message, and he felt guilty about what had happened in his life, so he decided to get the labotomy so he could be a happy little vegetable for the rest of his life.

To live as a monster=he realized what he had done
die a happy person=purposely getting labotomized so he didnt have to deal with what he had done.

yes but isnt the beauty of the movie that it could go both ways

i mean run could also mean that she knew that they were gonna try to make him crazy and wanted to try to save him
just seems like most of it could have gone either way, however you wanted to interpret it

like why did they show the lighthouse at the end when nothing was going on in it

i do think he was crazy but just to play devils advocate

                          What a mind fudge!

I think I just went a little crazy after watching that.

That was actually a very clever movie that I haven't seen in a long time.

I personally believe he was insane majorly because all that crap that happened to him was to far fetched to begin with. Meeting the woman in a cave that was filled with rats? Lacing the food, cigs, etc with drugs?

But I think then again maybe it's so far fetched that it's true and...

Yeah.... I think I'm going crazy just from thinking about this.
