I was generally speaking. Usually multiplatform games are more popular because it gives everyone a chance to play and judge them, whereas most exclusive games are so under the radar that you probably didn't even know they existed, such as Crysis before it came to consoles. Halo is a franchise that has been around for almost a decade, and since shooters are the biggest thing now, it's only natural that one would know of it's existence. CoD is more popular simply because it's multiplatform, simple, well established, and easier to play. Halo has a far more interesting storyline, and other things going on, which is why I say it's more for the hardcore gaming audience. Casual gamers don't care about storylines in their games, they just want to be able to pick it up and play, and imo Halo, unlike CoD, isn't a game you can just start playing out of the blue, and expect to be good at.

I liken Call of Duty to your typical blockbuster movie (Avatar?) Nobody is saying the game sucks, or that it doesn't have it's very fun aspects (at least I don't think so), it's just that the game lacks a certain kind of polish and true quality that a game like Mass Effect may have.

I'm sure everybody here could agree that they've had fun with CoD at some point, it's hard not to have fun with it, just like most people wouldn't say they saw Avatar and thought it sucked.

Avatar completely blew every other movie out of the water in terms of sales, yet pretty much everybody would agree that it is more of just a fun money maker, rather than a great piece of film.

I think the point most of us are trying to make is that CoD has it's mindless fun, but just because it's the best selling game doesn't put it in the class of those truly polished, great games.

You can't seriously believe Halo isn't as "known" as Call of Duty. Combat Evolved has made more headlines and inspired more games than any console-based title, period. It may have been an Xbox exclusive but the game is probably only 2nd to Counter Strike in the list of titles absolutely everyone on earth with any knowledge of Western popular culture has heard of. Halo may be a considerably more difficult game to reach a decent skill level at but the community is certainly not as elitist as you're making out - I'd wager that when any FPS fan buys an Xbox, they pick up two titles. The latest CoD and the latest Halo. Halo has always been made for a casual audience just like every other successful title on any platform.

The reason it has been more successful and is played at a higher level competitively is that there's a lot more being factored into each gunfight in a game like Halo (power weapon spawns, map control, shields). CoD is considerably simpler, but the franchise has always been a pure twitch shooter, all about reaction time and speed (but admittedly not much else). The problem with the latest titles is that the game has started to be a little too forgiving (killstreaks, perks, nerfed rifles, botched hitboxes) to make up for the fact your average player isn't a fast nor accurate shot - whereas Halo hasn't had to undergo this transformation due to the type of game it is. That being said, on either game a team of skilled players versus a team of pubstars will always result in the same outcome.

It's ok, at least you spelled it right this time.

I don't play those other shooters so you're rants about me getting owned don't matter
That was the point... take someone who plays strictly Call of Duty, they'll have a hard time playing a game like Killzone, which has a heavy system. This point was proven with Killzone 2, as a bunch of CoD players started bashing it because it had a heavy system that they weren't used to.

I mean whats the difference between a shooter and a "hardcore shooter" that only "Gaming elite" like you play?
Uh.. because most games are made for the casual audience. Now most of the gaming industry is made for casual gamers because they'll bring in the most money, that's why the Wii basically destroyed the PS3 and 360 in sales at first. Same with FPS.

The gaming market in the US, is dominated by FPS, and with CoD you can easily pick it up and play, and not have to get used to anything. It's just your generic run of the mill FPS, and since it's a multiplatform game, it's well known to the casual gamer audience, unlike games such as Killzone or Halo which are exclusives, so they aren't as known, and they require more skill and patience to play and master. No one's claiming to be a gaming elite here, I'm just stating the difference between games that are marketed towards different audiences.

I guess if you're so mad at CoD, don't buy it and dont post in here...simple as that?
I'm not mad at CoD, I just don't get how everyone sits there and worship a rehashed product. I've never bought a CoD game before, not even the one's on the PS2. And last I checked, this is my thread, that I started, so I can post here if I want as far as I'm concerned.

And do you want me to throw out other examples to refute this sales=good game, formula you guys have going on here? Sales don't mean anything at all.

Who cares what other people like. If everyone liked CoD it would have 3 times the number of sales it does now, and since that's not the case, that means there are millions of other people who DON'T like it, so you proved nothing.

And like I said, CoD is marketed towards casual gamers, while games like Killzone, Crysis, or Halo are for more of the hardcore gamers. CoD is so popular because you can pick it up and play with ease, and it doesn't take much time to master, hence why it's marketed towards casual gamers. Take someone who plays nothing but CoD and send them to Killzone 3 online, they'd get destroyed. Killzone and Halo are multiplayers that require actual skill to be succesful at, CoD doesn't require that, you can basically get a positive k/d ratio without even trying.

I dare you to play Killzone online. I guarntee you'll have a sub-par k/d ratio.

First of all I never said it wasn't successful. I said you can't use sales as an indication of a good product. And apparently you disregarded my example proving that point. I'll just end it by saying quality over quanity.

As far as I'm concerned Black Ops is pretty damn good. I don't think there's anyone who has the right to tell me I can't make that call. I have a pretty solid background... A lot of the first guys I had on my FL when I started playing CoD ended up being the people the resident "experts" sub to on youtube!

I think it's stupid having these kind of debates about a game. You either enjoy a game or you don't, it's about having fun. There's no point picking it apart and arguing about what takes more skill because there's no end to a discussion like that. If you dislike it, unless the game was actually unplayable (Two Worlds) or was about kittens being slaughtered (... don't actually have an example) it's probably down to personal preference.

P.S. @IB, In my experience anyone who actually uses the phrase U MAD is getting PO'd themselves (and probably six years old), but your advice is fantastic. I will stop listening to you. Peace.

I only play the game when I get tired of my friends begging me to get on it.

    U Mad!!!???
I don't really care what your opinion is on my opinion, if you find the people that dislike Call of Duty, then thats fine, but you control you. Stop listening and reading if it annoys you, it's really simple.
