  • Gamefly coming to PC

    http://www.gametrailers.com/news/gam...unlimited/3722

Joystiq is reporting that video game rent-by-mail service GameFly, which acquired IGN’s Direct2Drive digital distribution platform a few months ago, will launch a new digital client this holiday and a new “Unlimited PC Play” service meant to compliment what the company refers to as a “unique combination of console and digital PC game offerings.”

“We’re talking to all publishers about participating. Several have been signed, but we’re not announcing at this time,” GamFly co-founder Sean Spector told Joystiq. “In the ‘Unlimited PC Play’ portion for GameFly subscribers, we expect to have over a hundred titles available for the beta launch, but we’ll be adding to the list constantly and should have hundreds at the time of our holiday launch.”

While we’re awaiting more specifics on an official launch date, the game roster, and how this might augment subscription fees, we do know that a closed beta is expected to launch in early September, with initial access being granted to those in attendance at a special event taking place in Los Angeles. If you’re nowhere near LA however, you might wanna sign up to test this puppy out over on the beta section of GameFly’s website, which you can do so right here.
Pretty interesting... seems like as long as you're a GameFly member you'll be able to download games and play them on your PC for as many games as often as you want, sorta like the instant streaming deal you get with Netflix. I'm guessing there's some security in there so if your membership gets cancelled the games are rendered useless.

Damn good idea if you ask me!

It is a great idea, but I think some game makers will fight it.

Gamefly is a great deal for console gamers, but as PC gamer, and a Steam Sale Junkie, I am so VERY dubious.

Not that I don't like the idea of another option for gaming but I ONLY buy games when they are on sale or the rare exception for a series or company that I believe in I will pay full price. It's because I want the company to have that money, I want them to make more games like that. It is me voting with my wallet.

Of course having said that, my schedule can bounce around. I think it has been at least 2 weeks since I have played a game for more than 30 minutes. I've been saving The Witcher 2 for a special time like a good book so I can give it the time it deserves. In that way Gamefly would be a waste of $ for me, I want to OWN my games. When I buy them I've already researched them, I don't have the time to try out any game that strikes my fancy. I stock up on sales and those games last me until the next sale (last me past it actually, my backlog is staggeringly vast at this point and that's blowing less than $100 twice a year).

I believe Gamefly is fantastic for a console gamer but on the platform with the best backwards compatibility, I actually want to own my games. I still play Age of Empires 2 and Battlefield 1942 with friends. I want to own, not rent.

I hope if you have a Gamefly subscription as a console gamer it gives you access to PC titles as well because there are some fantastic PC only games out there past and present that are worthy of your time.

I agree with everything you say here. I am a hardcore PC gamer and an ex-gamefly member. I stopped using gamefly because I spend my time playing starcraft 2 and other PC titles. I was interested in your past and present PC games that are worthy of my time. If they are on sale on steam, even better! Thanks

Never liked Gamefly, and I really don't see the point for PC gaming.

I can see this getting exploited really fast. All you need is a no disc-crack for the game after you download, and you can play it for free if you cancel it, since I assume the software will still be on your computer. It'd be like going to a store and buying a used PC game.

I'd imagine it's a little more advanced than that. That would be an obvious problem brought up when this idea was in the planning stages at GameFly.

Do you want me to just start listing games or did you have a genre in mind?

As far as sales, wait for the Christmas sale and you'll be able to get pretty much anything for 50% off all the time while they will have daily specials of 75 to 90% off.

Strategy, RPG, and Simulation are the genres that I enjoy most.

The games in bold are TOTALLY worth it at the full price. You said you're a big PC gamer so I'm only going to mention the lesser known games on Steam.

AI War - Steep learning curve but it can be worth it.
Anomaly Warzone Earth - A reverse tower defense game
Avadon: The Black Fortress - Playing this retro RPG now, it's cute.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic - Kind of a mix of all 3 of your genres.
Defense Grid: The Awakening - A nice little tower defense game.
Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga - Revamp of the original with expansion.
Eschalon series - Also good retro RPG's.
Greed: Black Border - Cheap co-op game that isn't too bad at all.
King's Bounty: The Legend - First in the series, great art style.
Magicka - Only really doable in co-op with friends.
Mount and Blade: Warband - All 3 of your genres in one package.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl - Get the overhaul mod for it.
                    Sanctum - a newer tower defense/FPS combo
                    Shadowgrounds - An older RPG
Terraria - Like Minecraft but fun.
Thief: Deadly Shadows - plenty of your genres here.
X3: Terran Conflict - A Space Sim, flight, armies, economy, you name it.

I hope there are some new prospects on there for you.
